About this property

The Historic Kline House - with private pool and spa. Walk to shops and restaurants.

Lovingly known as The Kline House, this light-filled, expansive 6BD/6BA home is located just one block to the sand and surf and a short stroll to the museum, village restaurants and shops as well as the theatre and symphony. Pull into the driveway that accommodates 3 cars and you will enter into the most wonderful large courtyard perfect for entertaining.

Enjoy the outdoor dining table with seating for 12 and lots of recliners to relax in the sun.

Around the north side of the home is the outdoor bar, bbq, seating with firepit, swimming pool and spa. Request heating for the pool at an extra daily rate.

The Kline house offers 6 bedrooms with the following configurations:

Ground floor: There is a Queen bedroom with ensuite bath that has a walk in shower and toilet.

The Primary bedroom has a King size bed, Smart TV, lots of space and shares a Jack and Jill bathroom with the 2nd guest bedroom, however, it does have an ensuite half bathroom with toilet and basin.

The 2nd guest bedroom has a Queen size bed and again shares the Jack and Jill bathroom with the Primary bedroom.
The Jack and Jill bathroom features a tub/shower combo, toilet and basin. The bathrooms, as are most of the rooms, traditional to the period of the home and not updated.

On the ground floor is also the Kitchen with new refrigerator and all the conveniences of a modern kitchen with plenty of cooking supplies, breakfast table and lots of light.

The dining table seats 8 and is situated right off the kitchen. There is an additional small dining table in the kitchen that seats 4. Great for breakfast or morning coffee.

Connected to the dining area is a very large living room with comfy, new sofas, large screen TV and access to a patio overlooking the pool with café table and 4 chairs.

Off the living room is the sunroom that is ideal for relaxing with a good book in the sun, a game room for the kids or just an extra room for you to relax in.

Upstairs is another 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 informal TV rooms and a large patio overlooking the pool and spa.
The Primary bedroom upstairs has a King bed with an ensuite bathroom that has a small bathtub, walk in shower, toilet and basin. This bedroom also has access to the larger patio overlooking the pool and spa.

The 3rd guest bedroom has a queen bed as does the 4th guest bedroom and they share a Jack and Jill bathroom with a tub/shower combo.

There is a larger TV room upstairs and also a smaller informal TV room that has access to the main upstairs patio.

In 1920, the 3660-square-foot home was moved from its original Prospect location to a quarter-acre lot to its current locaton, under the direction of Ellen Browning Scripps, a noted local journalist and philanthropist. It's still there, just a few hundred feet east of Whispering Sands Beach and the La Jolla Tide Pools in the heart of La Jolla Village.

Great Location ,but Property needs help
Several of the bedroom doors stuck or would not easily close. Several doors needed blinds or drapes to provide privacy from the next-door apartment.

A very old house with many old house problems
The house is from 1907 and filled with problems. This was not represented to us in the photos and description. The floors aren't level; the window and door fixtures are old and in need of repair; doors and windows don't open and shut cleanly; the floor plan is very old fashioned - lots of smaller rooms with no bigger open spaces for gatherings; the brick patio would be lovely if it weren't so uneven and dangerous (our 90-year old mother nearly tripped and fell twice). The refrigerator/freezer was leaking water and not working when we arrived because the floor is not level and it's almost impossible to keep the freezer door shut. The company sent a repairman the next day - but even after he fixed it, we had to keep slamming the door to keep it from reopening. So the first day of our family reunion, we couldn't use the refrigerator. The company also sent a plumber for another problem - and then refused to have the plumber repair the problem because it would be too expensive. So within the first 24 hours of our three-day stay, we needed an appliance repairman and a plumber. Nobody from the company that owns the property offered to come by. And when I said it would have been nice if they'd have apologized for the inconvenience, the response I got was: "I did apologize." The place was also not terribly clean. Under the coffee table in the living room there were nail clippings! (YES, and I took a picture) .. And under the couches were masses of animal hair, dirt and sand. Between the cushions there are old popcorn kernels. There was no offer for any kind of compensation - and we paid a lot for this place. I could never recommend it to anyone. We have rented through VRBO for many years - all over the world - and always loved the places we found. This is the ONLY time we've had a problem. It really compromised the enjoyment of the family reunion we'd been hoping for.
