The space
When the early settlers homesteaded the West Virginia Country side it was customary to have a house that sat to the back of the home that stored the food the family grew during the summer. By the time winter came, folks would have big bins of potatoes, apples, turnips, and carrots overflowing by shelves full of canned vegetables, pickles, and apple butter. Up stairs of the Cellar House, the family would store dried herbs and beans and perhaps a few tobacco leaves. Some families would use the top room to smoke and store meats for the winter too. Our Cellar house is part of our Bed and Breakfast- Country Road House and Berries. Guests can enjoy their stay in the newly renovated, yet rustic upper room above the cellar, complete with a "very comfortable" full sized bed, indoor plumbing, and accommodations for two people. The space is clean and guests have access to towels and hand made soaps. Guests can also experience the sights and sounds of the country as they listen to the nearby stream, gaze at the stars, or hike up into the trail located at the back of the field and visit the pond. This property’s location also allows guests to discover local restaurants and explore the outdoors while kayaking, fishing, hiking along the Elk River (home of the famous Muskie Fish). Also a close drive (approx 90 min) away from New River Gorge Bridge and White Water Rafting. With this reservation guest receive a hot homemade breakfast-dietary restrictions are accommodated.
Guest access
Guests of the cellar house have access to the upper room of the cellar. This features a comfortable double bed, kitchenet equipped with refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, and toaster. This is a private stand alone room not shared with another guest.
Other things to note
The Cellar House is part of the certified bed and breakfast, Country Road House and Berries, run by John and Angela Born are recognized members of the West Virginia Bed and Breakfast Association. Angela is a dietitian and can work around dietary restrictions of guests.

Also please keep in mind this is a century-old farm surrounded by many acres of land and woods. We love visitors. But not every single one of them is welcome! Try as we might, we cannot keep out every errant wasp, mouse, or stinkbug seeking food and shelter. Thx for understanding!

Best B&B Ever
Angela contacted us several days before our stay and asked up front of any accommodations needed. She then upgraded us without us asking which was very kind! Her husband John met us outside after dark and gave us a nice detailed tour. The following morning, we received a breakfast that was the best breakfast I’ve ever had my entire life! If I could give this B&B a 10 out of 5 star rating I would.

This felt like a cozy cabin in the woods. Everything was well prepared for us upon arrival. Angela was very generous and cooked a delicious breakfast. If I am every traveling through the area again, I will definitely look into staying here.

Great Stay
Loved the property. Great time. Definitely do not try to take a trailer as the area has no access for parking. Nothing against the stay just for information. Entrance road is one ish lane... LOL.

Unique
By using waze as the gps app it took us right to the drive. Once on-site we were met by one of the owners who was very helpful with us getting settled in. The room was advertised as rustic and it was very clean and comfortable. The next morning we were brought an amazing breakfast homemade by the owner and had a nice visit with her as well. Very nice people, off the beaten path and would totally stay here again. Maybe try the barn loft just for the heck of it.

A quick overview of your Innkeepers-John and Angela Born. John grew up in South Bend, Indiana and has much family still in the Northern Indiana/Southern Michigan area. We met and married in St. Louis, Missouri-I had moved to St. Louis for Graduate School and stayed to work in the Pharmaceutical Industry. John graduated from Purdue University and moved to St. Louis for his first job out of college. We met at church and got to know each other in a weekday Bible Study. We lived in St. Louis for 20 years before returning to West Virginia. We have six children.

I (Angela) grew up in St. Albans, West Virginia on the other side of Kanawha County. I attended college at West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, WV. I love that we have been able to come back to West Virginia to raise our family. John loves living here too. John is a software engineer by day and works in the post office at the back of the property. He spends his evenings juggling various farm related activities, my honey do lists, and the kids after school activities.

Growing and eating healthy local food is very important to us. He and I love cooking and serving breakfast for our guests together-its one of our favorite things that we do.

Why they chose this property

My name is Angela and I used to be an avid traveler until my feet became "tied with children". So since this not my season to travel we have unexpectedly discovered that meeting folks from all over the country and the world has been just as enjoyable. My children and husband,John, really enjoy meeting all the different families and couples who make their way to our 130 year old farm for a restful break from driving cross country, meeting half way for a rendezvous , to vacationing in our state full of wonderful surprises. John and I REALLY enjoy making and serving breakfast in the morning to our guests. In fact it has become one of our FAVORITE things that we do as a couple. I especially enjoy the challenge when I find out a guest may be a vegan, gluten free, or on some other diet that is critical to good health. I am constantly on the outlook for fresh local produce to incorporate into our menu but many of our ingredients come from our farm. I am a dietitian and used to catering to different dietary needs (thought I would throw that mention in there.). I also enjoy hosting families with children and giving them a chance to interact with our chickens, ducks, and turkeys. Children also enjoy climbing our trees, playing in the creek, and hiking up in the woods. So to describe myself in a short sentence-I love to travel, I love to cook breakfast, and I love seeing families enjoy our property. Oh and I love strawberries-this is a strawberry farm! of course!

What makes this property unique

Many guests take time to visit New River Gorge National Park. There is a scenic back road that takes you from our farm through Clay County and past the home of the Golden Delicious Apple to Gauley Bridge, Hawks Nest, and Fayetteville where the New River and white-water rafting is located. Some guests have tried out the ziplines or have spent the day hiking the numerous trails in the park. I always enjoy a quick visit to Babcock state park after stopping at the Falls, Hawks nest, and the Bridge overlook. Sometimes I will take the interstate way back home but sometimes returning the back country way through Clay County is just what I need.

Many guests just want to stay nearby and enjoy swimming and kayaking the local Elk River-it is a beautiful river. My family enjoys swimming and fishing near the Queen Shoals Bridge Beach. There are two rental companies that can help you enjoy your day on the river with tubes or kayaks. Locals own their own kayaks. There are many local places to eat too. Clendenin is an ATV friendly town, and you can drive on main roads and off roads-there are many trails in the area. You many see my neighbors driving by on their ATV’s going to town.
Bike riding or walking on the Elk River Trail can also be an adventure. Many new bridges and parking areas to access the trail have been constructed in recent months. Bike enthusiast locally and out of state are just finding this natural beautiful bike trail system. There has been talk about someone offering bikes to rent in Clendenin. But as of now I would plan to bring your own bike with you if you are interested.
West Virginia is a beautiful state with so much natural beauty. We would love to be a part of your visit as you explore the beauty of the Elk River and other area sites. You are welcome to call directly or text questions about our Bed and Breakfast-Country Road House and Berries B & B. We want to make sure you are comfortable with your choice to stay with us.
