About this property

Close to Indiana Beach... Pet friendly!

Our sustainable farm is set on 5 acres in rural Indiana, replete with pastures, vegetable gardens, woodlands, and beautiful views of rolling hillside. We're passionate about being responsible stewards of the land, growing our food using ecologically beneficial methods, and we strive to teach others about how to grow their own food. Come stay with us to learn a little about sustainable farming, take a tour (usually evenings by appt) of the farm and say hello to our hogs, horses, sheep, and chickens, or just sit back and enjoy your stay in this cozy private cottage in the countryside. We operate a CSA with our farm-grown foods, and we invite you to pre-order veggies and meats to be waiting for you in the home when you arrive.

The cottage is located in a private wooded area, about a mile down a country lane from the main 80-acre farm. It's well-maintained and spacious, with three bedrooms, a full kitchen, a reading nook with some books, and lovely views of the farm. Return home for a cozy evening inside after a day of exploring the farm, checking out the nearby hiking areas, spending a day out on the water, or sightseeing in Monticello. We're out in the countryside here, which means that there's plenty of nature to see and great views of the stars on clear nights, though it also means that our wifi signal can be pretty slow -- take this as an opportunity to take some time away from the screens.

Not far from the farm is the quaint town of Monticello, which has a water park, good fishing spots, lakes, and a reenactment of the French and Indian War every October. We're also less than an hour's drive from Purdue University, which has basketball and football games in season, and we're close to Hoosier Heartland Highway. About a mile from the farm there's a place to put a boat in the river, if you're looking to spend some time on the water during your trip. Let us know if you'd like recommendations on what to do while you're here. We look forward to hosting you!

Think about booking us for small intimate weddings, parties, Purdue game weekends and just to unplug from the hustle and bustle of life. Think about us for short business trips. Contact us for special business and traveling nurse/doctor stays for quotes.

Peaceful Family Getaway
Abby was an exceptional host who was very communicative and accommodating. She was always welcoming and made sure we felt at home. And she gave us a tour of her beautiful farm that we will never forget! Although the location was remote and peaceful, it was less than 30 minutes from Indiana Beach, where we all had lots of fun at the amusement park and waterpark. We enjoyed sitting at the fire pit, the beautiful landscape view, and the overall farmhouse experience. Thank you again, Abby!! Our family had such a wonderful time at your home!

Maybe I misunderstood?
The gorgeous photos of animals led my grandkids to look forward to at least a short tour to see some, but it didn’t happen. The house was very clean with new appliances, and the owner was welcoming, but busy and hard to reach. And the house sleeps six, not eight.

It has been her honor to have "international kids" all around the world.

Abby is especially interested in teaching interested visitors about agriculture, restoration/organic farming practices, homesteading skills and the frugal living skills our grand parents used to preserve food and enjoy life frugally.

Why they chose this property

This is a wild life sanctuary that draws deer from all over. Many species of birds also find their way to this area. Bald Eagles nest down by the river and are often sighted in the fields. This farm offers peaceful beauty, farm to fork food for you to prepare as well as unique options for activities in the area. Free farm tours are available to visitors, but are available most evenings and weekends, but Abby's has to work around her patient and on call schedule to schedule them. Purdue University sports are also close. The Boilermakers are close by-- cheer on football and basketball, or catch a swim meet, enjoy their music and fine arts offerings. Right now the Boilers are gearing up for an AWESOME basketball season!! Thistle Byre Farm attends the Saturday Farmers Market in Lafayette, Indiana every Saturday. This is a regular farm event May through October 8-12:30 at the corner of 5th Street and Main Street in Lafayette, IN. This market is located approximately 28 miles from the farm. Hoosier Heartland offers a direct route to all of these.
