About the host
Hosted by Clover Carroll
We’re Clover and Rachel Carroll. We love Washington county and have lived here for over 20 years. We’ve worn many hats throughout the years. We were professional musicians in the band Back At The Ranch and writers for Texas Live Magazine where we wrote about Texas history and cool, off the beaten path, things to go, do, and see in Texas. We also produced and hosted a Texas travel show called “Down The Road”. You might see some of our stories and music at one of our bnbs. We currently have three bnbs available in Washington county; The Old Dairy, The Church House, and The Cotton Den. We hope you enjoy your stay and promise to give you a 5 star experience.
Why they chose this property
We love history and Washington county is the birth place of Texas. Every old home has a story to tell. This home was built the year President Roosevelt created the WPA on May 6, 1935. The majority of WPA projects built infrastructure, such as bridges, airports, schools, parks, churches, and water lines. In addition, the Federal Project Number One programs undertook theater, music, and visual arts projects, while other service programs supported historic preservation, library collections, and social science research. At the same time Missouri Synod Lutherans living in Brenham, William Penn, Giddings, Lincoln, and elsewhere to worship, started the process of establishing a place of worship in Brenham. On October 21st, 1934 this group of Lutherans met for worship at the home of W.H. Sehlke. 28 individuals were present for that first worship service which was conducted by Pastor C W Lukens of Navasota. Grace Lutheran Church was formed on April 23rd, 1935. The Church House is located directly across the street from The Church House. You will notice the stone work of the wall on the property is identical to the stone work on the church building which was typical of the style of work done by the WPA in 1935.
What makes this property unique
One of the unique feature of The Church House is the loft room that adds additional sleeping space and is a favorite for younger guests. One of the unique features of the fire ring is that it was once a water well that has now been filled in.
