Holiday Get Away at the Hopestead
We had an amazing experience at this property. Our expectations were definitely exceeded. Vanessa did a fantastic job coordinating our arrival with really good communication via text and email. She made us comfortable with very precise directions. The Hopestead is tucked away on a farm not very far from the Jack Daniel’s Distillery making it a great place to stay after a tour. We did that on our way to a Nashville concert. This renovated Civil War era home still feels historically authentic yet has all the comforts and conveniences of today (Central Heat and Air, High Speed Internet, YouTube TV, etc.). Vanessa gave us a tour upon arrival with a great story behind the property’s history. She answered more questions about the history and renovation over a fantastic breakfast that she prepared for us on the morning of our departure. You won’t be disappointed with your stay.

Absolute perfect getaway!
We were promptly greeted by the hosts unpin arrival. They took time to give us a tour and explain some of the history. They were kind enough to send us restaurant info ahead of our visit and also let us know the town “shuts down early”, which was very valuable to know ahead of time so we could plan accordingly. We can’t say enough great things about our stay!! Highly recommend!!

Our stay at the Hopestead was absolutely amazing. From start to finishing it was an incredible experience. The home alone is something that you just don’t see everyday. Michael and Vanessa are awesome people that take the time to make you feel like family. We will definitely be back to this magical place in the future.

About the host

Hosted by Michael & Vanessa Hall

Host profile image
Today the farm is owned by Michael Hall, a combat veteran of the U.S. Army, and his wife Vanessa. As empty-nesters, they decided to open up their home to travelers from around the world so they could start a new adventure together.

Feeling that this farm started as a place of HOPE for an early American veteran, knowing it provided HOPE of safety and healing during the Civil War and is providing HOPE of an exciting new adventure for the Hall family themselves, they decided to name the farm
The HOPEstead.

Why they chose this property

In Circa 1790, Aaron Gage, a Revolutionary War veteran was given a land grant to head west and homestead. He made his dreams of a new life with his family come true on this very farm. As he came to the end of his life, Gage sold the property to William Thomison. Thomison had the same dream of building a farm life for his family. He built the current home in 1840 and allowed the ailing Gage and his family to live on the property until Gage's passing. The current home was built for $11,000. It was built three bricks thick and to this day has most of the original floors, doors, and walls. The farm originally spanned 700+ acres but was slowly sold off. Today it now sits on just over 47 acres outside of Lynchburg, Tennessee.
During the Civil War, the home served several functions. It was a headquarters for both the Union and Confederate armies. It was utilized as a hospital to treat injured soldiers and was a place of refuge for soldiers evading capture by the Union Army.
It was a place of hope for those in need.
Throughout the years, the property has served as a lodging facility to travelers, an apple orchard, a tobacco farm, a dairy farm, and a cattle farm.

What makes this property unique

We are off the beaten path, yet just 4 miles from the Jack Daniel's Distillery. And it's not every day that you get to sleep in a Civil War Hospital.
