The Museum District • Carytown --The Museum District is nestled between The Fan District and The West End of Richmond. Carytown is a bustling shopping district with some of the best privately owned boutiques, restaurants, and coffee shops. Don't miss our favorites: Sugar & Twine for homemade baked goods and coffees, World of Mirth for kids of ALL ages, The Byrd Theatre - Virginia's Grand Motion Picture Palace, built in 1928. All of this is within 2 blocks of the house!The area is referred to as The Museum District because it contains 2 award-winning museums: The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and Virginia Museum of History & Culture. Both of these venues offer traditional museum tours, but also host many events, concerts, etc. throughout the year. If you enjoy the great outdoors, you will love the James River Park System for hiking, biking, kayaking, etc. You will want to plan a day to visit Maymont Park also. A 100-acre historic estate and park with many unique experiences - stroll through the gardens and arboretum, see native wildlife habitats, feed friendly goats, explore The Robins Nature Center and visit the Mansion. If you are traveling with young children, make sure to set aside some time to visit the Children's Museum and the Science Museum. Both are a 20 minute walk or 5 minute car drive from the house.
