About this property

Restored Historic Carriage House walking distance to Downtown and the Riverfront

This one bedroom is tucked behind the main house along 7th street in the Belle Grove Historic District. It has a Queen bed, full bathroom, full kitchen, large flatscreen, Apple TV, and sofa with pullout bed.
The Carriage house is behind the main house along 7th street, one of the few remaining brick streets in the city. The neighborhood was started in the 1800's and carriage houses were common behind the main house for more well to do of this time period. The private access for carriage house is off the alley with off street parking. The main living space accessed by stairs up to a full front porch. In the 1920's carriage was converted to a motor court that was 2 living spaces and 2 cars could park under the space. When the space was renovated in the last 5 years the exterior looks as it would in the 1920's but has been converted to one unit inside.
The space is a 1 bed, one bathroom that will sleep 4. There is also a walk in closet and laundry room. you are less than 5 blocks from Garrison Ave. which is one of the main areas for bars and restaurants.
Fort Smith boasts a rich history though for one reason or another a lot isn't publicized. Wyatt Earp was jailed across the river before escaping to go further west. One of the brothels from "The Row" has been restored and can be toured. Judge Isaac Parker "The Hanging Judge" set not the bench here for the Western district of Arkansas and Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). Pretty Boy Floyd grew up across the river and lived in Fort Smith for a while. Bonnie and Clyde stayed here after their wreck to try and recover.

So clean! The bed is so soft and comfortable!
This is so cute. It’s so clean!! We loved our stay. Includes parking. You’re two blocks away from downtown historic district. Close to museums. Food. Shopping. If we come back to this area we will stay again! The bed is so comfortable not super hard! The pull out sofa has a memory foam mattress cover. They truly thought of comfort. I can not explain how clean this place is.

I've lived in or around Fort Smith most of my life. History is always been a passion for me so being able to preserve the history of the area to share with others has always been great.

Why they chose this property

The Belle Grove Historic District is the second oldest neighborhood in the state. The houses in the district span a wide range of architectural styles and were home too lawyers, judges, business owners and churches. The district has the only listed Green Book house in Fort Smith. The Clayton House museum is across the street and was the home of W.H. Clayton who served as the prosecutor for "The Hanging Judge" Judge Parker. The Fort Smith Museum of History still has some items from his court room along with items from "the bandit queen" Belle Star. Fort Smith Museum of History shows a timeline from the founding of the original Fort to present day. Next to the Fort Smith Museum is the Fort Smith National Historic Site. This is where Parkers court room was located, the gallows, and site of the original fort. The Miss Lauras welcome center a few blocks away is the last remaining brothel from "the row" where you can still tour it and see how the ladies lived. A little further down from Miss Lauras is the Marshalls Museum and houses Marshall history and notable cases. Countless lawmen and outlaws have called Fort Smith home and helped with the label "Hell on the Boarder"

What makes this property unique

Carriage house was originally a Carriage house for horses in the late 1800's. Sometime around 1920 there was an addition but on top and it served as a two unit mortar court. When the house was restored in 2019 it was put pact to how it looked in the 1920's. Thats why you see two front doors since it was originally 2 units.
