Hyannis is the largest of the seven villages in the town of Barnstable, Massachusetts, in the United States. It is the commercial and transportation hub of Cape Cod and was designated an urban area as of the 1990 census. Because of this, many refer to Hyannis as the "Capital of the Cape". It contains a majority of the Barnstable Town offices and two important shopping districts: the historic downtown Main Street and the Route 132 Commercial District, including Cape Cod Mall and Independence Park, headquarters of Cape Cod Potato Chips. Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis is the largest on Cape Cod.

Hyannis is a major tourist destination and the primary ferry boat and general aviation link for passengers and freight to Nantucket Island. Hyannis also provides secondary passenger access to the island of Martha s Vineyard, with the primary passenger access to Martha s Vineyard being located in Woods Hole, a village in the nearby town of Falmouth. Due to its large natural harbor, Hyannis is the largest recreational boating and second largest commercial fishing port on Cape Cod, behind only Provincetown. The village is the namesake of the former United States Naval ship USS Hyannis.

THINGS TO DO:

*JFK Hyannis Museum*

John F. Kennedy is nothing short of an American legend—an icon of both hope and tragedy. The residents of Cape Cod, however, see him a little differently. "He was our 35th President and our neighbor," they say, and it s this neighborly, human side of the man that takes center stage at the JFK Hyannis Museum.

The Museum offers a multimedia experience that recreates Kennedy s life from 1934 to 1963. Exhibits contain film, photographs, and decorative displays; there s even a video about Cape life narrated by Walter Cronkite. Each year, the Museum supplements its standing collection with a special exhibit focusing on one aspect of JFK s life, be it his political accomplishments or his relationship with his brother.

*Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruises*

Highlight your Cape Cod vacation with an unforgettable cruise aboard the Mid-Cape s only Whale Watch sailing daily from mid-April through October from picturesque Barnstable Harbor on the quiet North side of Cape Cod. For over 30 years, Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruises has provided whale watching eco-tours to Stellwagen Bank, for people of all ages, from all over the globe! Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary consistently ranks among the top 10 places on the planet to see whales. Veteran whale watchers agree; our whale watches rank among the finest in terms of our boat, the experience we provide, and the value to our passengers. Make sure you bring a camera, and not just for the whales.

*Barnstable Harbor Eco Tours*

Join us on a two-hour ecotour of quiet and majestic Barnstable Harbor aboard our brand new, spacious and comfortable 25-passenger pontoon boat, the Horseshoe Crab! Our tours feature a wealth of natural and historic delights for the whole family! Our ecotours are guided by an expert naturalist who will introduce you to Barnstable Harbor, The Great Marsh, the Sandy Neck barrier beach, Sandy Neck Cottage Colony and the Sandy Neck Lighthouse. Perfect for kids of all ages.

*Cape Cod Beaches and Cape Cod National Seashore*

Cape Cod’s beaches are considered among the best in the world, especially those along the Cape Cod National Seashore, a 40-mile stretch of unspoiled sandy beach in Outer Cape Cod. With 559.6 miles of unspoiled coastline, Cape Cod offers many beautiful sandy beaches for you to enjoy.

Cape Cod tests all public bathing beach waters. Monitoring results from previous seasons indicate exceptional water quality on Cape Cod, and the Cape Cod National Seashore beaches are part of the Blue Wave Campaign for quality.

After visitors have taken their fill of Greater Hyannis, we encourage them to strike out and visit our beautiful neighbor islands, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. The Steamship Authority solely transports vehicles between Hyannis and Nantucket; this service is available year round. Seasonally, the Authority also provides high-speed catamaran service between Hyannis and Nantucket aboard its Iyanough from mid-April to early January. Hy-Line Cruises also runs its spanking new high-speed, 494-passenger catamaran Grey Lady IV to Nantucket year round.

Seasonal visitors who prefer to visit Martha’s Vineyard from Hyannis may do so aboard Hy Line Cruises’ Vineyard Lady which runs between Hyannis and Oak Bluffs from early May until the end of October. Thereafter, visitors wishing to sail to the Vineyard must trek about 30 miles to Woods Hole village to take one of the Steamship Authority’s ferries to Vineyard Haven, which transports both foot passengers and vehicles year round. Alternately, the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority provides regular SeaLine buses from Hyannis Transportation Center, Cape Cod Mall or West Main Street, Hyannis to Woods Hole Steamship Authority dock for Martha’s Vineyard ferries.

And although ferry companies love having people on board as passengers, many visitors love strolling along Hyannis Harbor while watching its signature seagoing vessels come and go from the Harbor or watching them approach the relatively narrow channel leading to the Harbor from one of Hyannis’ beautiful Nantucket Sound beaches — Kalmus, Veterans, Keyes or Eugenia Fortes Beach.

In season, Hy-Line Cruises also features a popular tourist attraction. Enjoy a wonderful dinner cruise and watch the sunset right on the ocean with your special someone!
Cape Cod is full of fun!

Good Price
Great price for the location. 15 minute walk to Main Street. 30 minute walk to Veterans Beach. We had 5 adults and plenty of space. 8 people would require using both sofa beds in the small family room. Owner was very accessible and helpful.

Thank you for taken the time to view our Wonderful Cape Cod Home!

Why they chose this property

The town of Barnstable on Cape Cod is divided into 7 villages, the largest of which is Hyannis. Hyannis is the gateway to the area and, if arriving by plane, train, bus or boat, it is likely your first stop in town. The town is best known as the presidential getaway for the Kennedy clan who spent any available downtime at the family compound in Hyannis Port. The best way to see their stately homes is from sea aboard the Prudence, an old-time Maine Coastal Steamer circa 1911. Hy-Line Cruises organizes a 1-hour sightseeing cruise past the Kennedy compound. But you don't need political family ties to appreciate what drew this iconic American family to the region. The town of Barnstable, and Hyannis in particular, is beloved by travelers for its laid-back atmosphere and friendly vibe. And then there are the beaches. In Hyannis, Kalmus Beach is a popular spot for windsurfers with a constant breeze and good waves coming in from Nantucket Sound. The large beach is divided into 2 sections to safely keep swimmers and windsurfers out of each other's way. Keyes Beach is a family-friendly spot with soft, clean sand. The picnic tables and snack bar make it easy to grab lunch and return to the beach for more sandcastle-building fun. Veterans Beach is another convenient family beach and also the home of historical shrines honoring John F. Kennedy and the Korean War Memorial. In West Barnstable, Sandy Neck Beach is the longest in the area with 6 miles of pebble sands including off-road vehicle trails. All of these spots boast full beach facilities and lifeguards for safe swimming.
The town maintains an old-fashioned vibe that is a pleasant reminder of slower times. Climb aboard the Cape Cod Trolley for a slow ride around town. There's plenty to keep the little ones entertained including mini golf and a carousel on Main Street and loads of places to stock up on ice cream, snacks and penny candy at the Kandy Korner.

What makes this property unique

Mini buccaneers can indulge in some swashbuckling fun aboard an old-time pirate ship, the Sea Gypsy. You can also head out to sea for the ubiquitous New England whale-watching trip. Your guide will be happy to point out exactly what kind of whale you're looking at inculuding humpbacks, finbacks or the North Atlantic Right whale.Hyannis is the largest of the seven villages in the city of Barnstable, Massachusetts. Also it is the commercial and transportation hub of Cape Cod and was designated an urban area as a result of the 1990 census. Because of this, many refer to Hyannis as the 'Capital of the Cape'. Due to its large natural harbor, Hyannis is the largest recreational boating and second largest commercial fishing port on Cape Cod, behind only Provincetown.
The JFK Hyannis Museum in the old Town Hall on Main St. focuses on John F. Kennedy's time spent in the town. There is a memorial to President Kennedy on the Lewis Bay waterfront that was erected by Barnstable citizens in 1966. The memorial includes a fountain and a field-stone monument with the presidential seal and JFK inscription: 'I believe it is important that this country sail and not sit still in the harbor'.President-elect John F. Kennedy gave his victory speech on November 9, 1960 at the former Hyannis Armory, which is in the National Register of Historic Places.
