About this property

Spacious 3/2 - Historic Charm & Modern Comfort with pool, porch, cook's kitchen

The Winfield Mill was constructed in the late 1800s just two blocks from the Gatesville town square and Coryell County Courthouse. The Mill overlooks a bluff that leads down to the Stillhouse Branch of the Leon River. It was an operating grist (corn) mill until the late 1970s and retains many historic features.
Inside, Stonewall Mill House features a large open living, dining, and kitchen space with plenty of room for all to be comfortable. There is a wide selection of indoor and outdoor games, cards, dominoes, and a 9 foot shuffleboard table. Enjoy a fully stocked kitchen with brand new amenities, there is Wi-Fi throughout and a monitor/desk for gaming or working.
Outside, you can choose to grill and chill on the covered patio with a wonderful view and beautiful Texas sunsets or take it all in from the patio side pool (pool is open May-October). In the evening and early morning, deer can often be seen on the property.
The Mill House is on the edge of 3.5 acres that you can explore. We have a large backyard field with a view of the courthouse available for outdoor games. There are stone steps leading down to a year-round flowing spring and cistern plus a gravel walking path that leads down to a clearing next to the creek. Walking down along the fence will take you to over 500 feet of the Stillhouse Branch of the Leon River. The creek is not large enough for swimming, but there are fish to catch. The creek-side clearing is a wonderful spot for picnics.
There are two outdoor security cameras, one on the front doorbell and another in the carport facing the street. The doorbell also has a microphone for talking to people who come to the front door. There is no active microphone on the carport camera. The carport camera does NOT have a view of the pool or backyard. We occasionally monitor the cameras for your safety and the safety of our property.

Wonderful stay!
I love old and/or unique properties and this one was both of those! Be sure to read the history in the book at the house. While you’ll be staying just off the downtown area, the house feels like it’s in the country with the great views from the back porch. We would definitely stay here again.

Perfect gem
We loved the house. Perfect place to spend the day inside and an even better one to spend outside. We didn't get to explore as much as we could, I recently broke my ankle and can't walk very far. Wonderful stay. Excellent communication. Easy check in. Thank y'all so much!

About the host

Host profile image
Hello travelers! We are Christina and Daniel, slightly geeky couple with a passion for history, small Texas towns, travel, good food and better cocktails.

We bought the Mill House on Stillhouse Creek as a passion project, get-away and a place to share with our extended families all over Texas. Gatesville is both off the beaten path and in the middle of so many great Texas spots, we think it is a wonderful home base to travel from as well as a warm and inviting retreat to enjoy.

We can't wait to host you at our happy place, Stonewall Mill House. If you have any questions, want to know the best spots on the property, or are curious about the history and lore of the old Winfield Mill, just ask. We'll do our best to make your stay welcoming and comfortable.

Why they chose this property

Stonewall Mill House has all of the peace and green of being in the country, but the convenience of being right in town. We are walking distance to grocery store, town square, dining and more.

What makes this property unique

Many people in Gatesville have fond memories of the Winfield Mill & Hatchery, now the Stonewall Mill House. Eddie Winfield was quite a character who at one time or another ran the mill, sold chicken hatchlings, refurbished mattresses, raised English Bulldogs, and collected rare plants. We've heard fond stories of his foul-mouthed talking Mynah bird named Big Joe from folks as well.
