About this property

Kilcher Family Historic Homestead - Northgate Haus - Adventure or Relax

Awaiting your arrival, Northgate Haus on the Historic Kilcher Family Homestead is surrounded by Nature, overlooking the mountains and glaciers across Kachemak Bay. Modern design with cathedral ceilings and majestic views, a comfortable retreat to both rejuvenate and relax. * * * *

Northgate Haus brings a touch of Nature inside each room. * * * *

You may wish to begin with a rest in the spacious Aspen Room, featuring two beds, one queen-sized and one double bed. The Aspen reading nook has two chairs to sip tea while writing a note, catching up online, or chatting with a traveling companion. Trees adorn the room and provide a sense of calm. There's a dresser, a closet, extra pillows and blankets for your convenience. * * * *

The Baby Moose Den is on the loft level with a collection of little stuffed moose and a larger moose on the twin bed. Located right outside the media room with a convenient sink/toilet combo in the Eco Loo. * * * *

Curl up with a book in a quiet corner across from the Baby Moose Room in the Angel Alcove. Equipped with a sofa bed it enables an additional sleeping option for guests. * * * *

The view from the media room provides an entirely new perspective on the glaciers across Kachemak Bay. Be sure to bring your camera! With the Kilcher Family Homestead to explore, the beautiful beach treasures to discover, wildlife to photograph, and lots of exercise hiking the hills... plus we have over 600 movies to watch with comfy reclining chairs too! * * * *

Sip a cup of java at the kitchen bistro in the bright open-concept living area with the ability to look out and perhaps see a moose wandering past. Or absorb some morning sun rays as you catch up on your favorite novel in the east window seat and listen to the melodies from the various songbirds on nearby treetops. There's nothing so healing as having the time to be in the moment. * * * *

The fully equipped kitchen is created in such a way that cooking can be done while interacting with family and friends, with the mountains across the bay in your sights. * * * *

The hearth floor is another Fay Kilcher-Graham design. Rocks gathered along the beach create a unique Nature accent in the living area. * * * *

The Fern Forest Bath is on the main level with accents of ferns, branches, mushrooms, and another unique Fay Kilcher-Graham design, each rock specially chosen from the beach for this floor. Sink deep into soothing moments in the jacuzzi tub, and let every muscle relax. For those who prefer it, a shower is situated beside the double vessel sinks. Soaps, shampoos, toilet paper, blow dryer, and linens, are all provided for your convenience. * * * *

There is plenty of space for parking. * * * *

There is a small bench along the meadow to sit and let your mind wander as the sounds of the waterfall drift through the air. The property is on the edge of McNeil Canyon, known for its coal mining in years gone by. A sight to see. * * * *

The cliffs along the beach have coal that drops to the shore. In years gone by this coal was an invaluable resource used to heat homes. There are treasures to discover along the shores. Water is recommended for the hike to the beach as it is a challenging but rewarding trek. We suggest good footwear, and layer clothing to allow for changes in the weather.
There are seabirds, otters, and more - watch carefully for the camouflaged nesting plovers along the sands and lichens. There's so much to see, we won't spoil the wonder for you. Enjoy your journey of discovery. * * * *

June through to September 15th, you can choose to begin your day with a reserved one-hour guided Sod-roof Cabin Tour of the famous Kilcher Family Homestead including history and homestead stories for $35 per adult, or pack lunch and drinks and take in a guided 2-3 hr Specialty Tour - this walking tour highlights points of interest on the 600 acres which includes the Sodroof Cabin Tour, and is $65 per adult. Tours are usually Tuesday through Saturday. Let us know if you are interested and we can help book a tour for you. * * * *

Nearby Eats! Just a few minutes away in the town of Homer are many delightful bistros, and restaurants, with a lovely selection of foods to dazzle your tastebuds. * * * *

Beautiful house
We really enjoyed this house and property, it is a very long hike to the beach but it’s beautiful. The views even without a hike are amazing! The owners were very accessible and even provided a pack n play when I asked. My only warnings would be that this is not a property set up for a young family. The listing does say it’s not childproofed but I assumed that just meant cabinets not locked etc. There are breakables throughout even on the stairs. The listing states 3 bedroom but there is only 1 true bedroom, the pictures do a decent job showing that just make sure to look closely. Laundry is referring to an iron, no laundry machines available, spent $25 at a laundromat in town. This was not a very private space as the owners live in an apartment down stairs, super friendly and great just keep that in mind. Overall we would stay again, views were incredible!
