About this property

Architect designed hilltop hideaway near Edinburgh with wood-fired sauna.

A modern, architect-designed conversion of an 18th Century farm building. The Cartshed has a huge window framing the heather hills and woodlands of the Pentland Hills Regional Park on the outskirts of Edinburgh.
Start your day with a hike form your doorstep into the heather-clad hills. Embrace slow-living with the wood-fired sauna hidden in the woodland garden. Explore Edinburgh (only 20mins drive away) or curl up by the wood burning stove with a good book. Eastside Cartshed is your perfect hideaway surrounded by our 3,000-acre hill farm.

More Detail - Beautifully designed by a local architect, the Cartshed boasts a light and airy double-height space with a Scandinavian feel due to its muted colour palette and simple materials. Natural light floods through windows that are complemented by planed ash window seats and generous sheepskins. The open-plan layout is intelligently divided using level changes, wooden screens, and bespoke furniture made by local craftsmen.

Kitchen & Living room - The open-plan kitchen and living room are separated from the rest of the space by a wooden ash screen. The lower-level living area, though small in size, is perfectly formed with a wood-burning stove and window seat furnished with beautiful sheepskins. The kitchen is on a slightly higher level accessed via a folded steel staircase. A sleek, bespoke handcrafted unit (that serves as both kitchen storage and bookcase) divides this space.

Bedroom & Bathroom - Behind the ash screen lies a cosy bed nook fitted with an ultra-comfortable double bed. Immerse yourself in crisp linen, woollen blankets and soft pillows while you fall asleep listening to the crackle of the stove and rustling trees outside.

The bathroom features white marble tiles and a rain shower complemented by underfloor heating beneath polished concrete floors throughout.

Snug - A ladder from the bedroom leads upstairs to a hidden mezzanine which serves as an ideal spot for star-gazing or whiling away some time reading one of our selected books.

Outside - Set among acres of breathtaking countryside crisscrossed with walking trails right from your doorstep, you could take a picnics into the hills or hike for miles. Alternatively, simply unwind as you observe wildlife and world passing by from atop the nearest hill.

Wood-fired sauna - As our guest at the Cartshed, you’re invited to experience our enchanting woodland steam-sauna yurt with a complimentary session included in your booking. Savour it leisurely during an afternoon or evening session lasting four hours in this private retreat complete with spring-water plunge pool.

Practicalities - Our location off-the-beaten-track within a quiet glen of the Pentland Hills Regional Park is accessed via a one-mile farm track which can be a little rough in places but shouldn’t cause any problems for a normal car. We do recommend the use of a car for your stay.

Parking is provided for one vehicle near by to your cottage (30-second walk). There is an EV charger if needed. Luggage and shopping may be unloaded directly outside your door if required. We can organise additional parking if required. We live nearby on-site should any assistance be required; otherwise we’ll ensure your stay remains undisturbed.

About the host

Hosted by Jenny Cowan

Host profile image
Jenny and Michael will be hosting you on our farm, Eastside. Eastside is a 3000 acre organic hill farm in the Pentland Hills Regional Park near Edinburgh. The farm has spectacular views and hills which change constantly through the seasons. In late summer, early autumn visit for the iconic Scottish purple heather; in spring see new born lambs playing; winter can often bring snow. At any time, the farm is amazing place to unwind from the stresses of modern life - live a little more slowly, go for long walks and then curl up with a good book by the log burning fire.

Why they chose this property

The Pentland Hills Regional Park is very close to Edinburgh - and therefore offers the best of town and country. It's stunning hills, both rolling and craggy in places are a fantastic place to unwind and shake off the stresses of modern urban life. Here you can walk for miles from your doorstep, find a sunny spot out in the hills for a picnic and then return to your modern and sophisticated accommodation converted from an 18th Century farm building. In the evening, unwind with a good book by the log burning stove, enjoy gazing at the stars from the book-reading and bean-bag mezzanine level or indulge yourself with our enchanting steam-sauna, cleverly hidden in a tented yurt. The changing seasons bring something special to the area at all times of year - from the purple heather of late summer / early autumn to the magical snow of winter and playing, new-born lambs in spring. There is a reason to visit at any time of year.

What makes this property unique

Few other properties can offer such immediate proximity to both the hills and to Edinburgh. Excellent walking and mountain biking is right from the doorstep - once you're here then no more driving is needed. The accommodation itself is unique blend of tradition and Scottish heritage (it's within an 18th Century farm building) and ultra-modern, architect-designed sophistication. It's effectively a brand-new building inside an ancient one - built and designed to the very highest standards using high quality materials and local craftsmen. Edinburgh is only a 20minute drive away which allows you to explore the best of Scotland's capital city - sights, shops, restaurants and bars - and then swap the hustle and bustle for the relaxing quiet of the countryside on your return.
