About this property

Private Lake Michigan Lakefront Cottage

A spectacular retreat to get away from your busy life and relax! This pristine lakeside cottage is located in a wooded gated community on a scenic dune with views of Lake Michigan sunsets. It is beautifully designed for year round living or a vacation retreat just 10 minutes from downtown South Haven. The private stairs go down to a deck overlooking the lakeshore.
The Lake Michigan water levels are quite high so the beach is submerged and access into the water is not permitted from my property.
The property Includes a gazebo that is top of the line, enclosed and heated! Gazebo has large casement windows with screens on all four sides providing gentle breezes and fabulous views. With an under-tile heating system & baseboard heat, this space can be used for extra sleeping or just a great space to hang out & watch movies!
Main house is open with vaulted beamed ceilings, wood floors & walls. Sleeps up to 6 comfortably; includes 3 bedrooms and one bath. Master bedroom loft with king size bed with two seating areas overlooking the living room. Two other bedrooms are located on the main level; one bedroom has full sized bed and the other with a queen sized bed. Includes full kitchen amenities with granite countertops, A/C, wood-burning fireplace, Weber gas grill, large capacity washer/dryer, kayaks, bicycles, outdoor furniture, hammock, DirecTV now in house and Gazebo. Four different decks provide many different areas to gather or get away! Share the private wooded lot with hummingbirds and many other species of songbirds.

Experience the charm of the shops and restaurants, farmers market, festivals and other events located in or near downtown South Haven. South Haven is located 20 miles north of St. Joseph /Benton Harbor and 20 miles south of Saugatuck/Douglas.

Almost a perfect family cottage

The cottage and beach were by far the best set up we have stayed in on the West Coast of Michigan. However, we had 4 teenagers with us and they craved a TV in the main living room, and WIFI connection in the cottage. Although Internet connection came through at the beach, it would have been nice to wake up and connect at the cottage with a cup of coffee in the morning. We slept great on the beds, and loved the use of the beach chairs, bikes, and most importantly, the Kayaks -- they were a huge hit for our kids. Thanks for a wonderful time and a well-kept place! Just get a WIFI connection and a TV in the main room and we will be back!

Wonderful location and views

First, let me say this review is not just from a customer but somebody who also owns vacation property. We enjoyed our stay wonderfully and the privacy of this area was top notch. However, I feel the business side of me has some advice; 1- pressure wash all of the woodwork and get it sparkling. 2- get a landscaper for a full day and get it back to what it used to be, it's very overgrown and takes away from the beauty of the cottage and the views. 3- hire a handyman for a day and fix all of the window crank handles. Over half of the handles don't crank right and then you have to walk outside to put them back on their track. Very frustrating . I think this place would be five stars simply by doing these three things. Thank you for allowing us to use your home.

Quiet, private retreat

The property is certainly private, with a one car-wide road up to it. If someone is coming out, you have to back down :-) But that guarantees privacy. It was a bit brisk for a swim or kayaking during our stay, but we did try to sit on the beach and read. Unfortunately, the bugs were horrible. Since it is so private, we were the only two people on the beach for a quite a stretch, and I think the Japanese beetles or maybe june bugs were just too interested to get enough. Maybe because the house is in woods, the beach is bit rocky, not super sandy, so more bugs in the area? We only stayed on the beach for about 15 minutes, then we gave up. We don't go to the beach often, so maybe there are always bugs and we just didn't realize it. We were prepared for a rockier beach, but we were not expecting bug issues. Maybe that was just a bad week for bugs or something. The gazebo makes for a great bug free experience, with a nice breeze when you open all the windows. The cottage is very pretty and nicely furnished, except for the beds. Both my husband and I woke up literally sore all over after the first night in the king bed. We are both 31 years old, so not usually achy in the morning. We tried the queen bed on the second and third nights and still did not sleep well and were uncomfortable. I believe the queen is a memory foam mattress, and the king was a bit lumpy soft to us, so maybe we just prefer a firm mattress and they are fine for most people. We literally left on Monday evening instead of Tuesday morning to not sleep in the beds. The location of the cottage is very convenient to South Haven downtown. We also made a day trip to Saugatuck, and we think we will probably stay in Saugatuck on our next trip to the west side. This was our first trip and it was a good location to explore from. We went to St Joe to meet friends one night, also, and it was a quick drive. Without the bugs on the beach and the uncomfy beds, it would have been an easy 5-star cottage :-) The views are great. There are bikes and kayaks available which is convenient. If Jim is looking for suggestions, wifi would be nice, just to be able to look up local restaurant locations/menus, driving time to other destinations etc. And maybe new mattresses.

Excellent property with beautiful views of Lake Michigan!

My adult children, wife and I could not have found a more beautiful, clean, amazing house with spectacular views of Lake Michigan. Even though the place had a large screen TV in the Gazebo, we never felt the urge to turn it on since the outside view of the lake, the stars, and the forested surroundings were too awesome to ignore!

Peaceful, comfortable, amazing lake views but unreliable beach

Very comfortable relaxing cozy home with fantastic lake and sunset views. Well-stocked home, responsive host, fab blackout shades, comfortable beds. Great location and easy to use house codes to come and go. The watchouts - - the beach is beautiful but comes and goes so don't rely on having a beach when booking. we only got to walk along it for a one early evening and then the rest of the time the tides completely took over - construction was going on at the house with someone showing up at the house at 7:30am to begin work and tools all over the gazebo space which garnered it unusable. The host gave us a discount for our troubles but definitely make sure that there won't be work being done while you're there if you are hoping for a peaceful respite. - there isn't great outdoor space -- no firepit, a few uncomfortable plastic chairs facing the water and a hammock on the driveway (not lake) side of the house. we had our own little happy hour on the plastic chairs with amazing views but its not a space you want to curl up and hang out in. - shower water smells like sulfur which is typical for well water but good to know ahead of time if you're not used to that.

The Perfect Weekend!

Quaint and classy! This beautiful lake home overlooking Lake Michigan was exactly what we were looking for . . . a quiet oasis, spectacular views, just minutes from the town of South Haven and with hiking literally right next door! The perfect romantic weekend getaway!

Great Getaway on Lake Michigan

We had a really good time at this cottage. It was fairly private (only one neighbor on the south side) and had wonderful views of the lake. Lots of amenities like a fully-stocked kitchen and indoor fireplace. The "gazebo" (basically a stand-alone three season room) and accompanying deck were our favorite place to just chill out during our stay. Jim also was very good at staying in touch and ensuring that we had a pleasant visit. After this trip we fully plan on returning. Do be aware that while there is wifi it has a limited data cap and T-Mobile does not get cellular service (can't speak to other carriers). But you're here to get away, right?

We had a wonderful stay. The cottage was a perfect spot for our girls weekend!

The cottage is remote and peaceful. It is an easy drive to SoHa. The beach was nonexistent when we were there, so that was a little disappointing; however, the view is very pretty. Beds were comfy and kitchen had everything we needed. The gazebo was awesome!

Great views from several areas, inside and outside the house.

The house itself was fine. I was a little disappointed in the condition of the gazebo. It was very dirty inside, tools and things in and around it. Path to the gazebo was not lit at all, which made it difficult at night. I am not sure if the gazebo area was quite ready for visitors. Also, someone showed up at the house to start working at 8:00 AM the day of our check out, which was a little surprising. Overall, we had a great weekend.

Beautifully located

Loved our stay. The cabin is lovely and had all the amenities we needed. The sunsets were gorgeous and the decks were amazing - we ate dinner out on them every night. Would have given the place 5 stars, but the beach was almost non-existant due to high water levels, which is totally outside the owners control.

Brilliant location, views and cottage!

We traveled up from Indiana with family that flew in from Ireland. It was like a home away from home. Lovely cool weather, beautiful scenery, and a cozy little cottage to stay in. The only thing missing was the rain, and everyone was happy about that!! We had a wonderful experience. We didn't meet the owner in person, but spoke with him on the phone. He was very nice and was very helpful. His cottage is lovely. Great place to stay!!

Beautiful cottage, gorgeous views, a once-in-a-life-time vacation!

What a beautiful cottage facing the lake and backing by the woods. Gorgeous views from inside and outside the cottage. We have seen the sunsets every night, and every night presented the views uniquely magnificent. There were so much to do for everyone around the property and nearby. Thanks to Mr. Atkinson for giving us the opportunity to have this once-in-a-life-time vacation.

Beautiful beachfront home!

This home was beautifully furnished and had a wonderful beachfront location. We hardly left during our four day stay as it was such a lovely property. We had seven people in our group, and we all slept comfortably. Jim sent us lots of helpful details and we were welcome to many of his home's amenities, which was very hospitable. We had a great time and can't wait to be back!

Stunning home in a beautiful secluded setting

We loved everything about our stay here. Went for a celebratory birthday weekend with friends. We leisurely lounged in the hammock and on the deck and lingered over coffee and meals - all with amazing views of the lake. This home is incredibly serene and has everything you need to feel simultaneously at home and far away. Cannot recommend this place enough.

Beautiful views of Lake Michigan sunsets.

We had our annual "cousin vacation" this week. The cottage was amazing. Plenty of space to spread out and enjoy each other's company. We found everything we needed including coffee, and other pantry essentials. We spent evenings watching the incredible sunsets of Lake Michigan. The owner, Jim, was very helpful and made sure we had everything we needed to have a perfect vacation. Thank you and we are planning on vacationing with you next year.

Well-cared for comfortable home with spectacular lake views! Four season Gazebo is a delight!

We enjoyed a long weekend getaway for 2, although this well-designed cottage can accommodate family gatherings as well. Large living area windows provide panoramic views of Lake Michigan! The cottage and separate Gazebo exceeded our expectations! Close to great food, shopping...and ice cream at Sherman's!! The owner was very helpful and responsive throughout our stay and did a great job in making us feel welcome in this beautiful setting. We will most certainly be back and would highly recommend this property to all!!

Ideal for long weekend getaway with a cozy cottage feel. Great place to enjoy Lake Michigan sunsets.

Our family of seven adults rented the cottage for three days and four nights. The cottage has a cozy feel with beautiful views of Lake Michigan. The kitchen was functional for easy meal prep and we used the Weber grill for several meals. The large dining room table was a fabulous spot to gather for meals and board games. We enjoyed using the kajak and hiking the dunes at the end of the beach. The short distance to South Haven by car is convenient and we enjoyed shopping and meals in the shops and restaurants there. Although there is only one bathroom, our family adjusted given the short stay and the larger size of the bathroom and double vanity. The gazebo offered a nice spot to read and watch tv or movies and enjoy the view of the lake in the morning and evening.
