About this property

Oaxaca home with terrace and view

New, sunny, furnished home in quiet hillside neighborhood with terrace and majestic view of city. Close to downtown. Perfect for nature lovers, artists, foodies, remote workers.

Our home is designed by renowned Oaxacan architect Marcos Sanchez, who specializes in sustainable buildings. You will notice the abundance of natural light, clean lines, and efficient use of energy and space. The home is furnished in minimalist style with products by Casa Verde, Oaxacan designers of sustainable furniture, Guibani Artesanal. It sleeps two people comfortably.

There are three floors. The first floor has the dining space and fully-stocked kitchen, featuring artisanal dinnerware and special appliances, such as a blender, toaster oven, mixer, Bialetti stovetop coffee maker, and water filter. Much of the cookware is stainless steel or cast iron. There is a washing machine and a loveseat.

The bedroom, with matrimonial bed and full bath, is on the second floor. The third floor has a desk, artisan chairs, fully-enclosed terrace, and speakers/turntable/ bluetooth receiver. The terrace, with hammock, has a 270 degree view of Oaxaca city and its surroundings, including Monte Albán.

Enjoy original work by Oaxacan and other Mexican artists Francisco Toledo, Hugo Tovar, Fernando Olivera, Taller-Galeria Siqueiros, Lapiztola, and others.

We have a cistern, to avoid public utility water shortages which are common in Oaxaca City.

We try be environmentally friendly. Water is heated by solar energy. Composting equipment is in the yard. Removable screens have been installed on most windows. A small cooling unit (on the third floor) uses electricity, water, and ice. There is a water filter for drinking water, which eliminates the need for plastic jugs.

The location is ideal for people wanting a unique Oaxacan experience. The neighborhood Colonia Estrella is adjacent to the city's historic center. Close to downtown, yet quiet and off the beaten path, we offer proximity to more popular tourist sites. By foot, we are twenty minutes to the Santo Domingo cathedral, ten minutes to Xochimilco, and ten minutes to major bus lines. We are two blocks from the entrance to a forest preserve. The hammock is a great spot for listening to birds, which venture from the forest preserve to the nearby Jacaranda trees.

Unique house on the hill
It was such a sweet house! very comfortable bed and great view! The only caveat is its way up on a very steep hill- plan on taking a taxi a lot- some taxis wouldn’t go all the way up the hill.

About the host

Host profile image
I was born in Mexico. In college and graduate school, my travel and research interests were mainly in eastern Europe, particularly Albania and the former Yugoslavia. I came to Oaxaca in 2000 on a weekend visit from Mexico City, and met my future wife.

Born and raised in southern Oaxaca, she is a co-founder of Los Cuiles Cafe and professor of anthropology at Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Superiores en Antropología Social, in Mexico City. She specializes in the documentation and preservation of indigenous languages. Other interests include ethnomusicology, and cooking Oaxacan food.

I am fascinated by the cuisine, languages, and vibrant social life of Oaxaca. I am a member of a dance collective that meets Mon-Thurs in Oaxaca City.

Why they chose this property

I love how Colonia Estrella is an authentic Oaxacan neighborhood, away from touristy downtown proper. It overlooks the city, yet is easily accesible to downtown.

What makes this property unique

It feels like you’re living in an art gallery. Also, the hammock with the view. Excellent kitchen appliances. Bluetooth receiver/speakers/record player. Comfortable sheets. Personal touches. The house is truly one-of-a-kind. The third floor is an excellent space for working. If you are a couple who are both working from home, the three-floor design is wonderful. You have some space from each other (1 person works on the first floor; the other on the third floor).
