About this property
Romantic Home in Medieval Village Where 'Chocolat' was Filmed
Step back in time for a relaxing romantic retreat in an authentic medieval village unchanged for centuries. Situated in the Burgundy wine district, Flavigny Sur Ozerain was chosen as the site for the movie 'Chocolat' for it's old world charm and sense of timelessness. Previously an artist's loft, this barn has been converted into a simple yet surprisingly contemporary home, ancient on the exterior with all of the modern conveniences inside. Come stroll the quiet streets of the walled hilltop village, listen to the church bells mark the time, and experience a life before all of the hustle of today's rat race!
3 hours drive southeast of Paris(an hour and twenty minutes on the TGV!) and an hour northwest of Dijon, between Beaune and Chablis, this home can offer a serene escape or act as the perfect springboard to the delights of Burgundy and the Cote D'Or. With the Restaurant de L'Abbaye, La Grange, and the Creperie Les Ursulines right in town, one needn't leave the village's serenity, but with Alesia's ruins and fabulous restaurant Le Cheval Blanc, Semur en Auxois's vibrant medieval shopping district, the Abbaye Fontenay, and Saulieu nearby there are many temptations to explore.
Come explore the joy of life in the French countryside, and discover what you love most about this enchanting destination!

About the host
Hosted by Mary Kate Saunders
Kirk and Mary Kate Saunders split their time, and their hearts, between their homes in Laguna Beach, California, and Flavigny Sur Ozerain. With their teen-age sons Kian and Rory, their families and their architecture and physical therapy practices in California and the U.S., Laguna remains 'home,' but Flavigny steals all their free time! The charm, the bells, the food and especially the people of Flavigny draw them back as often as possible.
Why they chose this property
We have named this home 'Le Cadeau,' 'the gift.' Our dear friends, the O'Neals introduced us to Flavigny's charm, offering us a visit to their home in 2007, and later assisted us in purchasing it. We feel that the opportunity to experience this treasure is a gift we were given, and a gift that we want to pass on to our family and friends, old and new!
What makes this property unique
There are many favorite aspects to life in Flavigny, but marking time with the bells stands out, along with purchasing croissants from the bakery truck every morning and lunch at La Grange. Sitting with a glass of wine on the balcony, watching the sun set over Monsieur & Madame Grob's lovely garden isn't bad either!
