About this property

⭐ Historic & Unique Lodge...Minutes To The Winter Fun of Mount Sunapee! ⭐ 🎿

A unique & historic 1912 lodge, all original with modern comforts in the heart of the Dartmouth- Sunapee region. Ideal for couples looking for a romantic getaway or ski vacation. We live right next door, so we are always available. We do not allow visitors on the property at any time. Walking distance to quaint downtown area.

Before you book, please take the time to read through the rules and the full description below to make sure the space works for you.

LGBT friendly. Pet-free, smoking/smoker free. Maximum occupancy of 2. Minimum age of adults renting the space is 25. Families with teenagers (13+ welcome). The space isn't suitable for children. Guests/visitors aren't allowed at any time.

90 minutes from Boston & just 5 miles from the summer fun of Lake Sunapee & Mount Sunapee, the 'Lodge' is a truly unique space with timeless and upscale accommodations that make this far more than your traditional rental destination! Located at the historic estate and summer residence of 2-term New Hampshire Governor Francis P. Murphy, we provide a rustic, yet romantic retreat.

A comfortable sectional sofa with chaise is parked in front of an entertainment center: LED television with surround sound CD/DVD/Stereo. As there is so much to do, see & enjoy in the Dartmouth-Sunapee Region, we don't provide cable (it's supposed to be a vacation after all!)

An oversized field-stone fireplace with twin leather pub chairs awaits the weary traveler or skier. Twin bookcases with Tiffany lamps are filled with books, games and distractions for when you just want to hang out.

When you're ready to cook, the kitchen at the Lodge has everything you need. This original and virtually unchanged turn of the century kitchen features original built-ins with modern electric stove and oven. Full-sized refrigerator, microwave, coffee pot and anything else you'll need. A farm style table sits beneath trendy Edison light bulbs for cards, games or meals.

After a day on the road, at the lake or on the slopes, you'll enjoy Governor Murphy's 'Locker Room', with a large walk-in 2-person shower.

Lastly, when you're ready to crash, the Master Bedroom features a large king size sleigh bed with 1000 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets, goose down comforter, and tons of pillows. There is a folding twin cot available by request. There is an air conditioner in the bedroom only for comfortable nighttime sleeping. There is also a white noise machine as well.

This is as close to a truly classic lodge as you'll find this side of the White Mountains with history that we've worked to make comfortable for anyone. We hope you'll love it as much as we do!

Guests have full access to the grounds. Your caretakers Ken & Travis are always available to answer questions, offer advice for activities or the best place to grab a bite.

ABOUT THE AREA
The Murphy Estate is located right off the General Stark Highway and is centrally located in the heart of the Lake Sunapee from the slopes of Mount Sunapee or the harbor of Lake Sunapee. Though we are close to all activities and town, we're tucked away on a quiet side street, surrounded by woods (don't be shocked to see young deer running around the back yard). It's peaceful, quiet and very private. If you bring a mountain bike you can bike right down the street and hit the rail amazing stretch between here and Claremont with ponds, wildlife and covered bridges.

Downhill skiers will love Mt. Mt. Ascutney and Okemo close by. Golfers will love Newport's Golf Course. Gaudens historic site nearby. Reconstructed Fort #4 offers historical reenactments and colonial-style Thanksgiving Dinner. Gourmet dining on Lake Sunapee, New London, Lebanon and Hanover. Hopkins Center and Dartmouth College 50 min. Horseback Riding and Blueberry Picking nearby, Bird Watching, Sledding, Walking, of things to do!

There are no public transit systems nearby, however the Amtrak station is located nearby in Claremont. Car is necessary. 2+ hours from Boston. Bus stations in New London, Claremont, or Lebanon. Nearest airport: Manchester.

Newport, NH Stay
We attended a 2-day Parelli horse training course, and arrived at the property late on Thursday, came back exhausted each evening, and departed early morning on Sunday. The property was very well-maintained, clean and charming. The bed was a delight, and the showers and kitchen quite functional for our needs. I would highly recommend this quiet, quaint VRBO to others seeking a great place to relax.

Wonderful retreat
Perfect location for a wedding in Sunapee and reception at the Old Courthouse in Newport. Gracious and helpful host, property better than described. Our only regret was the short time there!

About the host

Host profile image
Your hosts Travis and Ken have been restoring this property back to its original splendor and all of monies generated go directly back into the restoration of the estate.

When not entertaining guests, we travel and enjoy the countless farms and farmer's markets available in the area in the summer months. We're gracious, accommodating and enjoy meeting others. We enjoy history, antiquing, British comedies, cooking, baking and road tripping.

Why they chose this property

The Murphy Estate dates back to the early 1800's when it was the Kelsey/Herrick farm. In 1913's, the founder of Thom McAnn shoes and New Hampshire WMUR TV & Radio station and 2 term New Hampshire Governor Francis P. Murphy renovated and expanded the property into a summer estate for his family. Since then it has been relatively many of the amazing and unique architecture and elements from this period survived. If you love history and the charm of a true is as close as you'll come this side of the White Mountains!

What makes this property unique

A historic lodge space in the heart of the Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee region.
