About this property

Secluded Accessible Home on Private Lake

The Lakeview Suite is the two bedroom upper floor apartment of a wheelchair accessible chalet lake home overlooking Lake Alice, a private spring fed lake.

The great room's knotty pine cathedral ceiling and soaring windows bring in the great outdoors, and the wrap-around deck with table and seating overlook the lake, woods and gardens.

This special location is quiet, far from the road and the hubbub of busy life, with a meditation labyrinth, pollinator garden, forest trails and tree fort. It is great for birding, relaxing and connecting with nature.

During every season, the Lakeview Suite is a special place to be.
In spring the woods "green-up", ice leaves the lake and flocks of migrating birds stop on their way North.

Summer is for swimming, fishing, boating, hiking, biking and enjoying the vacation land of Ottertail County - where there are more lakes than any other county in the world! Dock and floating swimming raft give access to the crystal clear waters that eventually flow to Hudson Bay. Note: There is no boat ramp access to this lake and children must be accompanied by adults for water access. See house rules for other information. The breezy wrap around deck with table and seating offer delightful lounging and entertaining . And at night, our dark sky displays the Milky Way in all its glory!

The autumn colors are spectacular throughout the hunting season. Our firepit offers a cozy place to warm up and tell stories by an outdoor fire.

Nothing compares with the pristine snow, hoarfrost and groaning lake ice of winter. Enjoy cross country skiing, skating and watching the bald eagles and signs of wildlife in the woods surrounding Lake Alice. Inside you can enjoy the wood burning fireplace, Deep Winter Greenhouse and heated garage.

The all electric home has a large fully equipped kitchen with wrap-around granite counter-top with lunch seating and a large expandable dining table, perfect for small events and family gatherings. The great room has a queen sleeper couch. Bedrooms have a queen bed and a twin trundle bed set with sliding glass doors that open to the deck overlooking the gardens.

The Lakeview Suite has landline Wi-Fi and high speed optic cable Wi-Fi is available in our "Rusty Shed" garage/barn near the driveway entry if you need a more connected workspace. A flat screen TV with access to all your streaming services is also available. The laundry and caretaker occupy the lower level apartment.

This house has been the home to our daughter and small granddaughters for the past year (updated photos without their decorations will come later in the spring) and is a great space for young children to explore safely - the deck closes off so littles can spend outdoor time relatively independently. We have a collection of puzzles, toys and books for children, young and old, to pass the time while here, whether on a rainy day, or to unwind together after a day of adventuring outdoors.

The on-site caretaker is a friendly welcome host and helper who respects your privacy.

Any events must be negotiated and scheduled at the time of booking.

About the host

Hosted by John Salmen

Host profile image
I'm a retired Architect who specialized in sustainable building design and "handicap accessibility" for hotels, restaurants and lodging facilities. I'm now the caretaker of the Slowcycle Permaculture Farm. These are lands and waters that were cherished and fought over by Ojibway and Mdewakonton Sioux for thousands of years before they were taken by American settlers. The property has been in our family for several generations and is now in a trust for our grandchildren. As caretaker I protect, maintain and enhance the sustainability of the SlowCycle property and host visitors and Lakeview Suite guests to help them see and understand the patterns of nature around us and to make the most of their time in this special place.

Why they chose this property

Lake Alice is a pristine, spring fed lake at the top of a chain of lakes and rivers that eventually lead to Hudson Bay. Only a few private homes have access to the lake. Our 55 acre wooded property has woods, prairie, marshland and ~400 feet of Lake Alice shoreline . Ottertail County is an amazing geological remnant of the last ice age. Glaciers molded the terrain into rolling hills, lakes, marshes and streams between the arboreal forests of northern Minnesota and the flat plains of South Dakota. Ottertail County is an outdoor recreation paradise with more lakes than any county in the world! The produce from local farms is spectacular. Climate change is forecast to be beneficial for this region, making it warmer and wetter - a perfect location for a long term sustainable homestead.

What makes this property unique

The Lakeview Suite is unique because of it's seclusion, sustainability, wheelchair access and immersion in nature; in a modern and comfortable setting. All of the electricity that runs this all electric house comes from our on-site PV solar panels. We even have enough energy left over to sell back to the grid.

At the Lakeview Suite, you don't have to "rough-it" to be sustainable in the north woods!
