About the host
Hosted by John Salmen
I'm a retired Architect who specialized in sustainable building design and "handicap accessibility" for hotels, restaurants and lodging facilities. I'm now the caretaker of the Slowcycle Permaculture Farm. These are lands and waters that were cherished and fought over by Ojibway and Mdewakonton Sioux for thousands of years before they were taken by American settlers. The property has been in our family for several generations and is now in a trust for our grandchildren. As caretaker I protect, maintain and enhance the sustainability of the SlowCycle property and host visitors and Lakeview Suite guests to help them see and understand the patterns of nature around us and to make the most of their time in this special place.
Why they chose this property
Lake Alice is a pristine, spring fed lake at the top of a chain of lakes and rivers that eventually lead to Hudson Bay. Only a few private homes have access to the lake. Our 55 acre wooded property has woods, prairie, marshland and ~400 feet of Lake Alice shoreline . Ottertail County is an amazing geological remnant of the last ice age. Glaciers molded the terrain into rolling hills, lakes, marshes and streams between the arboreal forests of northern Minnesota and the flat plains of South Dakota. Ottertail County is an outdoor recreation paradise with more lakes than any county in the world! The produce from local farms is spectacular. Climate change is forecast to be beneficial for this region, making it warmer and wetter - a perfect location for a long term sustainable homestead.
What makes this property unique
The Lakeview Suite is unique because of it's seclusion, sustainability, wheelchair access and immersion in nature; in a modern and comfortable setting. All of the electricity that runs this all electric house comes from our on-site PV solar panels. We even have enough energy left over to sell back to the grid.
At the Lakeview Suite, you don't have to "rough-it" to be sustainable in the north woods!
