The home was very well kept and very quaint. The location was perfect for where we wanted to be as far as our New Years itinerary. I would definitely stay again!
The house was great! Very clean, extremely convenient location to Three Oaks and Journeyman.Communication with the host family was amazing, fully informed every step of the way and they even reached out offering a later checkout which was very much appreciated following a wedding the night before!Would recommend!
Our family had a wonderful stay at this beautiful VRBO! The house met and exceeded all of our expectations. We were welcomed with a lovely basket on the table, and there were so many indoor and outdoor activities for the kids to enjoy. The house was a short walk to the downtown area, where we enjoyed going in all of the local shops. Excellent communication with the owners, and we had no problems with check-in or check-out. Thankful for a great opportunity to stay in a beautiful part of the country!
Adorable cottage close to the Waren Dunes. Just as described in the listing. Comfortably slept 6 adults and 4 kids under 10. The kids loved the loft! Thank you!
The house worked great for our short family vacation. Our kids loved the kid sized sleep loft and lots of room to play outside. Kelly was a great host.
This cottage was perfect for relaxing with our family & dog after exploring Harbor Country! Quiet location yet close to restaurants & shopping by foot, & a short drive to New Buffalo, wineries & beach. Would definitely stay again!
This cottage was exactly what e needed and was just a described. W also enjoyed the small town as we visited the Thrift Store icecream shop and the Bicycle Museum. Would definitely booked in the future.
Kelly was wonderful updating me on the weather before we came into town. The home was cozy with lots of space for a family of 5. Our 3 kiddos loved the loft room and we enjoyed taking walks and playing board games.

Great property!
This property was wonderful for our group of 8. It was exactly as shown in the pictures, very well maintained and had easy access to the town of Three Oaks and nearby New Buffalo. The only suggestion we would make is that if there are more than 4 people staying to bring your own coffee mugs, as there were only 4 in the house but otherwise it was very well equipped and had everything we needed. I would recommend this place to anyone and my friends and I would love to come back!

Hi Carla,
Thank you so much for your nice review of The Mod Cottage in Three Oaks. I'm so glad you and your guests enjoyed your winter getaway! It's nice to hear that you might consider a return visit.
I'm sorry there were only 4 mugs during your stay. (There are supposed to be 12) I have let the property manager know and we will make sure that the cupboard is fully stocked. Thank you for bringing it to our attention! Kelly and staff
Traditional Cottage Experience with Modern Amenities
Loved the decor! Slightly funky, with a nod to the past. Favorite areas of the cottage were the dining room, back porch room, and the front porch. First floor bath is beautiful! Despite instructions, I struggled with the Aga stove and oven.
Location is ideal!

Great weekend Getaway
My husband and I recently rented this property to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. This location is perfect for couples or families coming from Chicago, it only took us a little over an hour to drive there. The owners have done a great job with the renovation, so many great spaces in the house - great for a couple, group of friends or families. The welcome basket was a great touch and we appreciated all of the maps and recommendations left for us. We enjoyed the location also. It was a very easy to get to many of the local wineries to enjoy tastings or a nice meal and just a few mins from Warren woods park where we went hiking with our dogs. The house was also within walking distance to the local distillery (the Journeyman - we highly recommend) and several places to eat in small Three Oaks town area. This is a great location to take advantage of the many things Harbor Country has to offer. We will definitely be coming back.

Does not sleep 10 adults
The property was not real clean. We had 10 adults. Many over six feet. Not easy to climb up to the attic room for the 3 twin beds. No fitted sheets for pullout bed. Pillows stained. Floors were dirty. I would list it for 6 adults sleeping comfortable. The ladder also didn’t seem very safe going into the attic.

Hi June, I'm sorry to hear the property was not as clean as you expected. I will take that feedback to our team. Typically we get a 5-star in this area so I'm sorry if we felt short during you stay.
We do provide sheets for the pull out sofa in the linen closet. I apologize if those were hard for you to locate. If we earn your trust for a future rental please note we're just a quick text away to help our guests with anything!
I also agree, the house most comfortably sleeps 7 adults in the bedrooms with 3 children in the loft. Perhaps you missed the pictures outlining the sleeping arrangements during your booking process. And rest assured it's very safe! The ladder is only 3' tall and passes a thorough building inspection each spring.
Sincerely,
Kelly with The Mod Cottage

If your goal is a slow paced, relaxing vacation...
Our goal was to get away for a week, unwind, and disconnect. This house, and the town of Three Oaks, was perfect for this. First, the house itself is great. Needs a touch of TLC on the exterior but overall, the house is great; nice size, large lot (we had badminton set up and there is plenty of space for croquet course (set is included with house)), tastefully decorated, clean, and the front porch was great. We spent considerable time having coffee in the morning and wine in the evening on the front porch. Very quiet setting. As far as the location and town, you can walk or ride your bike into Three Oaks. Three Oaks is a very sleepy little town, but with a handful of nice shops, nice restaurants, bike rental places, a great distillery/restaurant, ice cream parlor, excellent butcher shop with their famous summer sausage, and a great library. This place was perfect for unwinding. On top of that, you are 10 minutes door-to-beach (New Buffalo) and quite a few other destinations (Warren Dunes, Union Pier, Lakeside, miniature golf, etc.). We really loved the house, the town of Three Oaks, and the proximity to beaches. We will be back!

Thank you for your kind review! You described the village of Three Oaks perfectly... it is why we decided to become owners! We had planned to paint the exterior of The Cottage this spring but unfortunately the weather did not cooperate. It is now on the painter's schedule for this fall. We're looking forward to refreshing the outside. Thanks again for your stay, The Hansen Family

Comfortable house for two families traveling together
This house has been lovingly redecorated by the owners and was configured to accommodate a variety of groups -- we appreciated having variety of bed sizes, something that can be hard to find in a rental. We, a family of five, traveled with another family of four. The boys loved the loft and the girls were comfortable in the coral painted room upstairs. Each set of parents took one of the master bedrooms.
The kitchen has most things you'll need for a short stay -- we would have liked more baking sheets that fit in the oven and possibly a few more dishtowels. There is no automatic dishwasher in the kitchen, just a charming vintage sink where washing up can be done quite readily. Plan to bring your own drinking water if you are sensitive to odors as the well water sometimes has a strong odor.
The front porch had recently been redone so there wasn't a place to sit outside in the front of the house; that may have also been because we were visiting in early spring. I expect that will be a great addition to the living space once it's furnished.
We enjoyed the large rustic dining table, which was generous enough in size to accommodate mealtimes and doubled as a game table. The sun room out back is great in the morning when the sun shines into the space.
The owner was very responsive and made useful suggestions for places to go in the area. She also arranged for the caretakers to set up the grill -- which had been stored for the winter -- when I mentioned that we planned to make use of it. That went above and beyond and was much appreciated.
This house is in Three Oaks, a charming town in southwest MI within a short drive to Lake Michigan's beautiful beaches and other Harbor Country towns with restaurants, shops, and spas for travelers. It's a great location for a getaway weekend from Chicago, but could be a home base for a longer summer vacation too.
Some of our favorite nearby places to visit: Warren Woods (opens April 1 for the season, sadly was closed during our visit), Warren Dunes State Park, Blue Plate Cafe, New Buffalo Public Beach.

Thanks for your kind word about the cottage. . .I'll be sure to let the property manager know to add some dishtowels and baking pans before the busy summer season! Also we are happy to be opening our new front porch with comfy vintage swivel chairs around May 1st!
Beautifully renovated farmhouse in a very quiet neighborhood
It was perfect. Loved the renovations and the rustic aspects of the house they were able to keep. Plenty of space, had everything we needed. Nice huge side yard with tons of privacy.
This house is tucked into the most charming neighborhood. Every morning and evening I walked my dog and admired the homes and their classic gardens. The children loved the loft bedroom with the ladder and the yard was perfect for running around. Really enjoyed having the whole family around the big farm table for meals we prepared on the AGA stove. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed. I usually bring extra things along like sheets and towels, but this house was fully stocked. Even with 10 people in the house, everyone was able to find their own favorite little spot. The adults spent most of the time in the little window room off of the kitchen, drinking our coffee and watching the rabbits and birds. The host left us a welcome basket with everything about Three Oaks village and the local wineries, such a nice touch. We spent one afternoon in the village, we enjoyed pizza from Patellis, whiskey from Journeyman, fresh bologna from the butcher shop, and the kids enjoyed the antique stores. We came for the dunes and beach, but Three Oaks and Mod Cottage gave us a home away from home.

About the host
Hosted by kelly hansen
We are a family of four living in Howell, Michigan in the Detroit suburbs.
My husband, Jeff, is a financial planner and I own an interior design firm. Jeff and I like to restore old homes and buildings. Our offices are located in a fully restored, three story Victorian building in Downtown Howell.
We love to ride our bikes. We have taken our tandems all over North America. We have a tandem for the boys and a tandem for the girls. We originally came to Three Oaks for the cycling, wineries and Lake Michigan.
My children are now 20 and 22 and they helped us with the restoration of the vacation home which took 14 months to complete. They also like the in town location and visit on their own now. As a family we also enjoy the library, pharmacy and ice cream shops; all of which are a two block walk from the cottage.
Now that we have a vacation home in Harbor Country we hope to enjoy the beautiful area year round and share it with family and guests.
Why they chose this property
We had been renting in Three Oaks for almost ten years before we finally decided to buy our own vacation home.
We love the area for its beauty -- especially the Lake Michigan shoreline and the wineries. We are cycling enthusiasts and the roads in Berrien County are a cyclists dream - safe, scenic and well marked.
We purchased the home on Cedar Street because my husband and I restore historic properties and we loved the in-town location of this charming home.
What makes this property unique
I think our visitors will enjoy the home itself- it is in great shape and the decor is cheerful and a little quirky. The location is a bonus for those who like to stroll the antique shops, restaurants and theatres of Three Oaks - leave the car behind!
Hop on your bike and tour all of Harbor Country - we've provided the cycling maps for you.
Take a scenic drive out to one of the wineries. We love late summer and early fall for trips out to the farms and vineyards.
Two of our favorite beaches are the Warren Dunes State Park and the New Buffalo City Beach. At Warren Dunes challenge your family to climb the Tower Hill sand dune. We do it once a year and the views are worth it! Or have dinner in New Buffalo and walk to the city beach - check out the yachts or watch the sunset as you take an evening dip. The water is beautiful.
