Comfortable, Quiet, and Remote Studio On A Working Ranch In Southern Arizona

Enjoy a place away from the city while visiting the beautiful Chiricahua Mountains. This studio is on a working cattle ranch near the Chiricahua National Monument and Pinery Canyon of the Coronado National Forest both noted for their excellent birding, wildlife and hiking opportunities--a photographers paradise.

Relax with our majestic sunsets, dark nights and our peaceful, quiet country atmosphere from the comfort of our accommodations where day trips to Ft. Bowie National Monument, Bisbee, Douglas, Tombstone, Portal and Willcox are easily accessible. The Willcox area is also becoming a winery destination with 13 tasting rooms in the vicinity.

Available for your comfort: 2 queen beds, pull out couch, central air and heat, wifi, kitchenette. However, there is no TV and only emergency phone service available via the neighboring house. Cell phone service is very limited. We do not charge a cleaning fee or extra guest fee.

** This is a working ranch and the studio is connected to a shop area. We will do everything to keep our noise down during your stay.

Comfort Galore. And can we talk about those comfortable LL Bean sheets??

The property was exactly as described on the website. Very comfortable, sparkling clean, friendly host, minutes from the entrance to the Chiricahua National Monument. The linens on the beds were outstanding if you’re like clean crisp 100% cotton sheets. We would stay here again and we highly recommend!

Excellent stay

Janna’s place has all the little touches that add up to a perfect stay. Comfy beds, soft towels, wonderful water pressure for a shower, a fully stocked kitchen, decent wifi coverage, and folders full of recommendations for things to do in the area. The location was perfect for hiking at Chiricahua National Monument. With its close proximity, you can come and go easily. What more can you ask for?

Cute and Well-equipped Cabin at Chiricahua

Absolutely delightful cabin on a working ranch just outside the entrance to Chiricahua National Monument. No place is closer and no place is better if you’re planning to visit Chiricahua National Monument. Pristine remodeled bathroom, very well-equipped kitchen, and deep, comfortable beds

Stay Here!

The guest suite at the Crossed J Ranch was the ideal place to stay for our Memorial Day weekend getaway to the Chiricahua National Monument and surrounding area. The studio was quite spacious and had everything we needed to make our stay enjoyable. The hosts were wonderful and had the place stocked with a dozen fresh eggs, butter, filtered water, condiments, spices, etc. Staying on a working ranch was a truly delightful and unique experience. We enjoyed learning about the history of the area and seeing a bit of it in the "mini museum" right on the ranch. We also loved watching the birds, wild turkeys, and cows, and stars from the front porch of the guest house. Unless you are camping, you really can't stay any closer to Chiricahua NM as it's just a few minutes drive from the park entrance. If you want to get away from it all and don't mind packing meals for the duration of your stay, I highly recommend staying here. We certainly look forward to returning.

Wonderful solo trip to southeast Arizona

I planned a week's solo birding and hiking trip to the Chiricahua Mountains and surrounding area. The Riggs' cabin on the Twisted J Ranch was an absolutely perfect place to stay. The first morning when I opened the curtains, the porch was filled with birds swarming the many feeders the Janna kept filled every day. The cabin was spacious, comfortable, and perfectly equipped, even to the point of a dozen fresh free-range eggs in the refrigerator. The location was utterly quiet and peaceful, and the night skies were filled with stars. Janna, Jim, and Buffy were friendly and helpful, and the best hosts imaginable. I loved my whole experience.

Wonderful stay

It’s just 4 miles from the Chiricahua National Monument entrance, so idea if that’s your destination. It’s rustic but very spacious and comfortable, with full bathroom and shower, kitchen, couch & easy rocker chair and 2 queen size beds. Eggs and butter were in the fridge plus coffee, tea, condiments, etc. Jenna the host lives next door and married into the family that mostly found and pushed for the creation of the monument. You’re in an old working ranch with good birding and many interesting historical artifacts. Jenna was full of info and very helpful. Truly and unique and wonderful place to stay.

A marvelous stay at the cattle ranch

My husband and I stayed in this charming, well outfitted cottage for three nights in April. Initially we found this VRBO to enable us to hike the Chiricahua Mountains- but we found ourselves loving this place beyond imagining. Anything you might need is here! We were even provided with a dozen eggs to complement our menu during our stay. The bed is exceedingly comfortable. The windows bring in plenty of sunshine. There is plenty to see on the premises; friendly cattle, history to peruse, and the owners couldn't be more hospitable. We found ourselves wishing we had booked for a longer stay. If we return to this region- we will definitely stay here!

Cozy cabin in an amazing location.

The ranch is in a beautiful remote part of Arizona, just 5 minutes from Chiricahua National Monument. The hiking trails are great. Our cabin was absolutely spotless and cozy. We saw lots of local wildlife. The host family were very welcoming and accommodating.

So fun!

Jan’s property is simple and delightful. A perfect day and beautiful southern Arizona. Only a couple of miles from the national Monument where we hiked. Everything was fantastic. Her house is super organized and isn’t missing a thing. The beds are comfy and even though it dropped down to 7 one night, we were toasty warm inside Definitely recommend this property and we hope to be back!

The working ranch studio is just a unique and fun experience. They have done a great job making the studio into an enjoyable place to spend a few days. Putting bird seed into the feeders the day/night we arrived was pretty cool as we were able to enjoy lots of birds right out the front windows during our stay, Lots of stuff in the kitchen available for cooking including spices, oil, etc. Even foods left by previous occupants (e.g. oatmeal). Fun rocks, minerals, and artifacts on display.

About the host

Hosted by Janna

Host profile image
Janna and her husband have been working on this ranch for over forty years and it has been in the family since 1879. You will be meeting them, and possibly their son and his family who also live on the property.

Why they chose this property

The property has been in the family for several generations. The studio apartment was built originally as a salt house, but it was later decided to be used as a guest house or 'Little House' as we call it. We want to continue that tradition and give travelers an inside look into our lifestyle.

What makes this property unique

The views from the porch are breathtaking. The abundant wildlife and birds give you a unique opportunity to enjoy nature. The dark nights provide an excellent opportunity to view the night skies. The hiking and biking possibilities are endless.
