About this property

Secluded Offgrid Backcountry Lodge in Natl Forest

Now for something completely different!

The Estes Park Outfitters Lodge is a remote mountain retreat on 20 private acres in the middle of 33,000 acres of Roosevelt National Forest. Hike, mountain bike, snow shoe, XC ski, and even bring your own horse to explore more than a hundred miles of trails few have ever seen.

I'll ferry winter visitors up in a snow cat; in summer you'll need high clearance 4WD. We are miles from civilization, with wildlife as the only neighbors.

BUT PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE READ THIS LISTING CAREFULLY

MOST IMPORTANT:

- I live in a caretaker suite on site.
- From June 1 to Oct 1 you should have easy access but you MUST have a high clearance 4wd vehicle.
- Due to unpredictable weather the other months, I advise you to contact me directly before instant booking.
- In the dead of winter, I provide a complimentary ATV or snow cat shuttle to the property but charge $300 for each additional run.
- During the shoulder season (April 15 to June 1 and Oct 1 to Nov 15) you may be able to access with your own car, or you may need to pay for the shuttle.
- Please contact me, please contact me, please contact me!

Now... my place!!

This is unlike anything else you will find on AirBnB – a secluded mountain retreat miles from the nearest neighbor completely surrounded by national forest and bordering Rocky Mountain National Park. I'm the owner and caretaker of this lodge , so while I live in a caretaker suite, the 2200-square-foot main lodge is a private space that's completely yours.

For 33 years I ran an outfitting business out of this property, but am now slowing down. During those decades I escorted hunters and horse riders along hundreds of miles of trails out my backyard that virtually nobody knows about. I know the terrain around this property better than anyone, so I can point you toward the most gorgeous aspen groves, meadows, streams -- heck, even a tiny private cold swimming hole 15 minutes from the house if you like dipping in snow runoff.

You will have uninterrupted access to a maintained public trail system that's essentially yours. While the crowds get stuck in National Park traffic, you can come to my lodge and be mountain biking, horseback riding, snowshoeing, motorcycling and hiking without seeing a single human soul (though the elk, deer, turkeys, bobcat, mountain lions, moose and bear are abundant!)

Note that access is difficult, which adds to the charm and adventure of this stay. In the summer you will need a high clearance 4WD vehicle to get here. In the winter months, I'll pick you up in a snow cat and give you a private ride to the property, winding along miles of snowy landscapes with incredible views of the Estes Valley and the Rocky Mountains.

While Rocky Mountain National Park deservedly gets 5 million tourists a year, the land around my property gets only a few hundred -- the lucky ones who book a stay with me. But amazingly, the terrain and mountains are just the same. In fact, you can stare off the deck directly onto the summit of Twin Sisters, which is part of Rocky Mountain National Park.

If you come here, you can

- Bring your own horse and keep them in my corral. I will feed, water and clean up after them daily, and give you maps from my house through historical ruins of homesteads dating back to 1889

- Bring your mountain bikes and embark on rides of up to 100 miles from my doorstep

- Bring XC skis and enjoy the groomed roads that I pack down with my snow cat

- Enjoy 10 miles of ATV terrain and hundreds of miles of motorcycle riding

- Hike private trails that wind their way through meadows and forests and onto summits of peaks within the National Park

- Enjoy a 2250-yard rifle range and a 50-yard pistol range if you bring your own firearms.

Again, all from the front door.

Afterward, during the summer you'll probably sit on the deck or in front of a fire pit as the sun sets and enjoy the views. During the winter, you'll likely enjoy a wood fire in the living room, cook an epic meal, and hunker down as the snow falls.

I'm a music aficionado, so the home's stereo system is bluetooth-friendly and concert worthy!

While this is a completely off the grid and green property, this lodge has all the modern conveniences: solar power, satellite TV, internet and radio and full coverage cell phone service. Water is fed from mountain springs at the headwaters of Fish Creek.

Live acoustic fire side private concerts available on request.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Bedroom 2 - Queen bed and 2 twin beds in a bunk bed setup.

Kitchen - Full kitchen fully stocked with cookware, dinnerware, and common spices and condiments and a 6 place custom log dining room table.

Amazing back country secluded cabin
A long weekend at Estes Park Outfitters was just what the doctor ordered for escaping the pressures of the world and unwinding. About 20 minutes past the last house and into the National Forest, we found a beautiful off-grid, log cabin on a mountain by itself. With beautiful mountains, aspen, and lodgepole pines, we did not fail to see a stunning view in any direction we looked, but never once spotted another house or structure in the distance. The accommodations were wonderful, with plenty of space to sleep 4, and a wide variety of seating options. The full chef's kitchen and grill were put to good use all weekend, and had every utensil we could have needed. The phone signal wasn't great, but that's part of the beauty of escaping to the woods. The large deck was another experience altogether. Overlooking a valley, and the twin-sisters mountain peaks, we could hear the creek bubbling below. There was a cool breeze to counteract the warm sun, and a constant birdsong to perfect the experience. Speaking of birdsong, all day long there were near a dozen, sometimes more, hummingbirds at the feeder. This wasn't the kind of hummingbird experience where if we stood very still on the other side of the glass a couple may come. Rather, we could walk out on the deck and have up to 15 hummingbirds flying around, looking us in the face from 3 feet, and drinking from the feeder as if we weren't even there. Two of our group of four visited 5 years ago with a similarly amazing experience. That trip included an unbeatable horseback experience across the mountainsides. Tim provides a comfortable, relaxing, and welcoming environment for those seeking to escape. We've camped the Backcountry of Rocky Mountain National Park more than once, but Estes Park Outfitters and the Nolan Cabin experience is every bit as secluded, but with beds, lights, and indoor plumbing. Bring a 4WD, but bring yourself. You won't regret it.

Great mountain getaway
This was a beautiful place to stay with amazing views and an awesome host, Tim. We traveled to Estes Park with our family and were able to stay here for 2 nights, wish we could have stayed longer. This place is so wonderful, full of the outdoors, beautiful horses, amazing views, and seclusion. Our daughters loved helping with the horses, adventurous ATV rides, and hanging out with the dog, Hank. It does take a 4 wheel vehicle to get to this magical place, and just when you think you are just about there... You have a little farther to drive but it was well worth the adventure. It's so hard to describe this place, everything in it has so much history and meaning behind it. Loved listening to all the stories Tim shared with us. You can hike for miles and see so many breathtaking views. We miss this most amazing place and host. We are looking forward to our next stay here!

Unique retreat
What a magical place! We just returned from a 3 night stay at this hidden gem, and I miss it already. The setting is breathtaking, the cabin is well stocked and the host is warmly engaging as well as extremely helpful ( he loaned us one of his cars when our rental wouldn't start). Yes, the road in is challenging for us flat landers, but the trek is well worth it. The cabin is decorated with loving care and most of the pieces has special meaning. Ask for the back stories! We have stayed in numerous cabins and other vacation rentals, and I have to say that I have never seen one so well stocked or gotten to know the owner so well. It was a great experience all around. We have an adventurous and responsible 10 year old, and the property was great for her, but I wouldn't bring very young children to the cabin. The beds were very comfortable as was the rest of the house. Wish I could have lingered longer.

Like Nothing Else
My wife and I spent Memorial Day weekend at Tim's cabin. This place is absolutely like nothing else we've ever experienced. The cabin is on a mountain top with sweeping views of snow-capped peaks and miles of pine forests. There are no other cabins anywhere nearby and you can truly feel the magic of the wilderness. At the same time, the cabin has all the amenities you could ever ask for. Soaring ceilings, satellite radio, satellite TV, HBO, full kitchen, elegant dining area, premium propane grill, and a large wood burning stove make the cabin feel cozy yet spacious and luxurious. Tim, the owner, will make you feel at ease and treat you like family. You are a 15 minute scenic drive from Estes. I thoroughly enjoyed our stay and cannot wait to return.

About the host

Host profile image
I am a retired outfitter with 33 years experience and have been in the Estes area for 42 years. This is my 'Jeremiah Johnson' dream cabin that needs to be shared. There are many things to do on this property like back country snowshoe/skiing activities , trails into Rocky Mountain National Park and Roosevelt National Forest.

Why they chose this property

This is a one in a million piece of property right outside of Estes and totally off the grid. It is only an hour and 20 minutes from Denver International Airport.

What makes this property unique

While town is only 6 miles away, getting to and from is a true adventure in itself. I can easily go a week without seeing anyone else. Sitting on the deck in the morning with a good cup of coffee and no sound at all except the wildlife. This is truly a soul changing experience.

Some days are active with every conceivable outdoor summer/winter activity right on property, but others could curl up with a book and watch the snow fall.
