About this property

Euro-style Woodland Retreat - Great Northen Tea Haus

The Great Northern Tea Haus offers a completely novel vacation experience unlike any other. A cobblestone cottage nestled in a remote woodland setting, entering into the Tea Haus is like walking into a curated dreamscape filled with nature and whimsy at every turn.

A vintage taxidermy collection, a gallery of windows, hand-painted murals and indulgent treats await you alongside natural fiber bedding and organic personal care products.

Visiting the Tea Haus is like stumbling onto a fairytale treasure trove in the pine forest. Ancient stone exterior and fireplace, Scandinavian-inspired woodwork, Old World hand-painted folk and fine art combine to transport guests to another time and place.

We pride ourselves on offering what the Swedish call "Lagom," and Goldlilocks called "Just Right."

We don't have giant flat screen TVs and state-of-the-art jacuzzis; we have a collection of vinyl records, and organic personal care products on hand.

We don't have a Keurig or a microwave; we have imported organic beverages and a kitchen stocked with essentials for people who love to prepare whole food from scratch.

We don't have a central location and bustling night-life; we have local maps of riverine adventure guides and local restaurants and farmsteads, vintage storybooks and board games for the whole family.

We are particularly keen on dogs and have a fully stocked "Doggy Depot" corner with bedding, treats, leashes, dishes, snacks and clean-up supplies on hand for our four-legged friends.

We have an assortment of vintage toys and pastimes for children that harken back to our own childhoods, where we read 'Blueberries for Sal' and dreamed of Maine from afar.

The Entryway- is a perfect space for transitioning from outdoor activities into a "Hygge" and cozy mode.

The Great Room- is a large combined space with a twin-bed sleeping nook at either end, flanking the kitchen and dining area. Open shelves house a majority of our utensils and amenities, while additional supplies are available in the yellow-painted hutch. Tea, coffee, espresso, hot chocolate, fizzy water and non-alcoholic cordials are available for all guests at all times alongside several jars of sweet treats and whole-shell nuts for cracking by hand.

The Bedroom- offers a relaxing minimalist space with elegant adornment. All beds in the Tea Haus are comprised of organic mattresses with either wool or bamboo toppers, organic cotton or linen sheets and duvets, as well as Pendleton wool blankets which may be hung in the bedroom closet depending on the season, alongside extra pillows and bedding. Two bathrobes are available in the closet for guest use.

The Bathroom- is a tiny room that packs a major punch! The small space is decked out ceiling-to-floor in rabbit-themed designs which bring levity and laughter to the most routine daily activities. Organic products from Public Goods as well as organic personal hygiene products are available. Our shower light offers Red Light Therapy although the bathroom itself has several lighting options and a makeup mirror on the window for optimal application.

The sunroom- is the crown jewel of the Tea Haus! A converted porch, the pine-clad room enjoys views on all sides of the surrounding woods. Wild turkeys, deer, owls, partridges and kestrels appear with regularity and suspect the property in fact belongs to them. We have also hosted several black bears and a moose enjoying a woodland stroll.

Exterior - Enjoy the safety of a fenced-in front yard with children and pets alike, which offers views of the local Mahoosuc mountain range. Native and perennial garden beds delight the senses during spring, summer and fall as hummingbirds visit the bathroom window, pollinators dance along our small stream and fun-size frogs happily hop amongst yarrow and thyme.
A seasonally-available firepit and outdoor seating area are accessible from front and sideyards, as well as directly from the sunroom.

OTHER DETAILS TO NOTE
Our modest yet (hopefully) refined little space is a special treat for those who value relaxation, aesthetics and quality materials. Those in search of the most high-tech modern conveniences would have better luck at many of the surrounding rentals.

We offer an intimate rental best suited for families or friends who are quite comfortable with one another, due to the shared nature of the space.

In particular, the bathroom is located behind the closet in the bedroom but does not have its own door separate from the bedroom door.

The daybed in the sunroom can be made up to accommodate a 5th guest depending on circumstances. Due to the size of our cottage and the types of furnishings we offer, we cap our listing at 2 dogs, but depending on size of dog may be flexible.

A European model washer and ventless dryer are available in the kitchen. We feel these amenities are best suited for long-term stays as this style of washer and dryer takes requires longer cycle times than most American-style models. As is typical of a ventless dryer, the clothing does not completely dry and heavier fabric may also require adidtional drying time and air-drying.

In all ways, we strive to offer the most accommodating visit that we can, while also caring deeply for our bespoke little home in the Maine woods.

Unexpectedly fun home!
Lovely home with so many beautiful details, you keep noticing new things for hours. My boyfriend was initially disappointed that we couldn’t find a tv, that quickly subsided, and an overnight stay felt like a 4 day vacation by the time we were on our way home the next morning. I wish there were samples of the tea that was sold at the house, I love tea but I’m picky and wish I could taste or smell before making a purchase, they sounded delicious from the descriptions! It was a beautiful 25 minute drive from Sunday river. On the way we spotted a pasture of buffalo, pulled over and watched the young ones play before continuing to the house. Great place, would love to stay here again.
