Absolutely perfect! Beautiful, spacious, private, peaceful. Fantastic pool and location near rice fields walk, great restaurants and walking distance to Ubud, including the Sacred Monkey Sanctuary. Juli and Maya were wonderful. Juli in particular went the extra mile for us, including booking our rafting trip and going back to retrieve an item we left there! We can't praise this villa enough! We would go back to Bali just to stay there.

We loved our experience!

We had an amazing stay here! The house is very unique and beautiful. It feels remote but is walking distance from several great amenities. The house manager and housekeeper took great care of us. We would absolutely come back.

We had a wonderful stay in Ubud. This villa is absolutely fantastic and very well located for walking to the various sites we wanted to visit. The sumptuous villa is nestled in nature, giving us the feeling of being in the jungle, with a very pleasant pool and beautiful paths leading to the road.The staff, Juli and Maya, were incredibly charming and dedicated. We also had the chance to enjoy a full-day excursion outside with Juli. We highly recommend this place.

Stayed for a few nights with friends. This is an incredible place. Huge house with many rooms and quirky features. Grounds and pool area really nice. Wonderful helpful staff who cook a delicious breakfast each morning as part of the arrangement. A great stay spent reading books, having massages, eating in the local restaurants and enjoying a few relaxing beers. Highly recommended

Absolutely amazing stay. It’s the only place you stay in the Ubud area. The beautiful natural setting is unmatched. That said, you are steps from the path that takes you to wonderful restaurants, and there is a grocery store right around the corner. The interior of the home melds modern comfort with Balinese architecture and art. The elegant pool area provides easy recreation and relaxation.Don’t pass up the amazing breakfast provided each morning by Maya and the touring available from Juli. They make a magical stay even better.We could not have asked for a better experience.

Peace and Relaxation in Ubud

The house is a snuggled away in a dream paradise to maximize enjoying your vacation. The staff is phenomenal and very accommodating and more than willing to assist you with any of your needs any time of the day. Wake up to a phenomenal breakfast prepared by Maya, catch some sun by the gorgeous pool and let the landscaping take you to paradise. Wrap up your day with a walk to eat at the Yellow Flower, or ask Juli to suggest one of the many delicious restaurants to wrap up your day. Bruce the owner is great to work with and provides wonderful advice in preparing for your vacation. Looking forward to returning to this tucked away paradise that is captured in the listing title accurately, tranquil elegance.

Simply delightful

We loved our stay in this unique property. The description says it all. Returning to Bali after 12 years we were very surprised by the increase in traffic, cars, noise and pollution. This made the property all the more special as it was surrounded by nature and well away from any traffic - while connected to the best restaurants, yoga studios and the outside by beautiful pathways. Support staff were also excellent and obviously hand picked.

We had an absolutely amazing stay here and would happily come back.I’ll admit that when we first arrived late at night, we were a little anxious. It felt like we were in the middle of nowhere, and because the home isn’t brand new, not everything is updated. However, by the next morning, we completely understood why this place is so special.The location is incredible. One of our favorite parts of the trip was walking through the rice field paths and lush jungle to restaurants that ended up being some of our favorites—all just about a 12-minute walk away. It felt peaceful, authentic, and unlike anywhere we’ve ever stayed.The home itself is very spacious. Since it’s such a large property and isn’t occupied full-time, there were a few areas that were quite dusty. That said, the housekeeper came every day, mopped the floors, and kept everything tidy, which we really appreciated.The host was wonderful. We asked if it would be possible to arrange a floating breakfast, even though he had never done one before. He gladly organized it for us (for an additional fee), and it turned out beautifully. We really appreciated how accommodating and gracious he was.Overall, this home gave us an unforgettable experience in Ubud. If you’re looking for a peaceful, beautiful place surrounded by nature and don’t mind that it’s a little older rather than ultra-modern, you’ll likely love it as much as we did. We would definitely stay here again.

a masterpiece villa in a blissful setting

At first we worried the walk from the main streets would be a downside to stay in Rumah Cahaya, but it was actually the primary gift. The quiet of the villa perched over a lush stream valley among rice paddies provided a huge respite. The villa itself with its carved facade, Balinese artwork, and smart design was like living in a refined but very homey museum. The owner has taken great care to provide directions, not just to the care of the home's use, but to the best local restaurants and walks. Without too much effort, one can get to all the locales of interest and the hubbub of the busy streets of Ubud. I hope you have time to read the copious notes on the construction of the home and its embodiment of a deep respect for Balinese lifeways and custom. The place is surprisingly affordable and though we were just one couple, it can clearly accommodate many more with ease. Rumah Cayaha could very well be your highlight on a hopefully encaptivating visit to Bali.

Even better than it looks

We ended up renting this property after a last minute cancellation from another place. The cost and location were appealing but it wasn't until we got to the house that we realized how lucky we were. The house is situated alongside a river and jungle valley with rice fields on the other side. The area is absolutely beautiful - so much so that the Campuhan Ridge Walk felt underwhelming in comparison. The house itself has no air conditioning but the vernacular design meant that it was very comfortable. The host was a little rough with his correspondence but once we arrived we understood why he was so protective of the place. The house itself is stunningly beautiful and it is clear it was made and maintained with care. Juli the house manager was very friendly and helpful and so too were the other staff. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who wants a more quiet and relaxed experience in Ubud. Easily the best place I have stayed in Ubud after 7 visits.

A tranquil retreat at Rumah Cahaya

Our stay at Rumah Cahaya was everything we hoped for and more. We were picked up by house manager Juli at the designated pick up spot. Juli is friendly and welcoming. Juli then took our 87 year old dad/ grandfather on a scooter, with some luggage also, to our villa. It is a short walk from pick up spot but a lovely entry to the stunning property. Rumah Cahaya is really breath taking. It’s a very grand and spacious property. There were plenty of spaces for our group of five to get privacy. The facilities are clean and Mayaa the house keeper is a wonderful presence. Mayaa comes around 8.30 every day to make breakfasts if you need or to keep the villa clean and beds made etc. The pool at Rumah Cahaya is magnificent. Very big and wonderful to spend the day sitting around. Out the back gate is a short walk through rice fields to cafes, warungs, the main road and shops. It’s a unique part of Ubud. I will definitely be staying at rumah Cahaya again. Loved it!!

Excellent stay in Ubud!

We truly enjoyed our stay here! The property was well managed, very clean and the staff was friendly and welcoming. There are lots of notes and signs at the property to make sure you know how to use everything and respectfully take care of the home. We found them quite helpful. The property manager Juli was excellent, he was hospitable, kind, and very helpful. He took us to Mt Batur for a sunrise hike and several stops afterwards to see more of Bali and Ubud. He spoke fluent English and was happy to tell us about Bali and the people who lived around Ubud. He was a fantastic tour guide and driver.The housekeeper and cook, Maya was also excellent! She was courteous and kind, welcoming and a very good cook. We enjoyed her nasi goreng and fresh fruit for breakfast daily.Bali and Ubud were quite good to us, the property we stayed at was a big part of that. It was gorgeous and filled with beautiful, local art. The house is private and quite, while surrounded by the nature and magic of the jungle. Ubud itself is within walking distance and so is a local supermarket.Thank you to all our friends and the house of light for an excellent stay in Ubud, Bali!!

What a gift staying in this stunning villa was! The place is amazing, and tastefully decorated with so much gorgeous art there’s something beautiful to see wherever you look. The location is idyllic - even with a bad knee the walk to the supermarket was 6 mins (I timed it!) & perfectly doable in the dark even without a torch - and the tranquility while only being a 20 min walk from the centre of Ubud is astounding. The path along the river takes a couple of mins longer but has the advantage of lots of shade, so we used both equally. Bruce has gone to great lengths to write a detailed, super helpful guide book (his suggested walks really helped me know the neighbourhood and find some interesting spots)and Juli & Maya were very responsive and both so so lovely while looking after us. One thing to note that, I hadn’t fully realised, is how open plan the beds are in the main house - although the downstairs one curtains off for perfect privacy my young adult son wasn’t as convinced as me and so, despite only being 3 of us, we utilised the Annex too. Glad we did because I can now share that’s also excellent, and though I feel the main house would have been plenty spacious enough if we’d come in our normal large group, I’d heartily recommend booking the Annex also if you are the kind of people that need your own space! The beds were all incredibly comfortable, the house was spotless, we loved the pool and breakfast was excellent. 10/10, stop searching and book it!

Absolutely magical!

Ruma Cahaya is without a doubt the most magical place I've stayed in, and I've been travelling for most of my life. The location is spectacular - nestled in between a river and rice fields, with no roads in earshot, it is quiet except for the music of running water to lull you to sleep.The owner is wonderful and has done such a great job with his guest guide. There are many small Warungs (local eateries) and cafes within a short walk, as well as the many delicious higher-end restaurants, and a large supermarket is about 6 minutes' walk across the rice field and through charming pedestrian paths. It's about a 20-25 minute walk into the heart of Ubud, so everything is accessible, yet the property is so peaceful you'd never know it.The local team is a family who took amazing care of us - the cook/housekeeper prepares delicious breakfast every morning before cleaning; the house manager is also an excellent guide to the sights both nearby and further afield. And if you're curious about the local religion and the daily offerings you see outside every home, the woman who places the offerings at the home will be happy to explain the rituals. They are so kind and warm-hearted too.The gorgeous, lush landscaped gardens around the house and the pool are not overlooked in any direction, so we had complete privacy. It was absolute bliss and we will definitely stay again every time we are in the area. I really can't recommend this place highly enough! We were very sad to leave it.

Frustrated

This property is outdated…all of plugs in the walls aren’t capable of given proper electricity…the refrigerator is out dated with mold and it was rusted on the outside of it…we didn’t have any access to watch any television for our entire stay..it was all kinds of insect crawling around and flying in the air…the waterfall amenity didn’t even work…this house is so far transportation…that it takes at least a 10-15 minute walk to even get to transportation…it’s so dark at night in the area that you are very limited to what you can do while staying there we had to be back home by 6pm….most of the activities doesn’t start until the late morning hours so by the time you get your day started it’s already late in the time and you have to rush back home…I tried reaching out to the owner several time and so do the Vrbo and neither one of us got a reply until I decided to just find another location to stay because I was overwhelmed with frustration staying here

Firstly, this guest arrived with more people than stated on her reservation. That means additional costs for meals, laundry, etc. and when I spoke to her about it her response was: "Hey, it's a whole house; what does it matter how many people I bring?" My staff and I are dedicated to having every guest thoroughly enjoy their experience, and are IMMEDIATELY responsive to any hint of a complaint, but the first I heard of a problem with this guest was in a message informing me that she was leaving! There are too many inaccurate claims in her review that I can't begin to answer them each (power plugs, insects, etc.). I had departed from my winter stay there, during which I check that everything is perfect, just three weeks before. Read the review of the previous guest who departed just two days before this guest's arrival and left a enthusiastic 5-star review, to get an idea of how unreasonable this person is. After all, she complained that it gets DARK EARLY in Bali in July, and that "most activities in the area don't start until late morning", when the Balinese actually arise and begin their day at first light. Lastly, it is clearly stated in our listing that the reason our villa is so wonderfully peaceful is that it is located away from any roadway. However, not only does a motorbike pathway end at the property, it is a just 5-minute walk to public transportation.

First time stay in Ubud

This was our first time to Bali and Ubud. We were prepared as well as one can be, for the humidity and cultural experiences whilst staying in a luxury villa. This is also the first time we have stayed anywhere described as 'luxury', so expectations were high. The villa itself did not disappoint. It is clean and tidy, the pool and gardens were also very tidy and luxurious. We were spoilt daily with the included breakfast from our lovely housekeeper Mayaa and it was something we looked forward to each morning. The property manager (and our subsequent driver whilst in Ubud - Juli) was also a wonderful, honest and kind person whom we developed a very good rapport with during our stay. We also met the gardener once and he was also a nice, polite and respectful gentleman. The environment in which the villa is situated in is beautiful. Surrounded by various fruit trees (banana, coconut, mango, etc) as well as rice paddy fields and neighbouring villas and lush vegetation. During the evening, whilst swimming in the pool you could see small bats and various birds flying around the sky. It was quite pretty and serene. Overall, an enjoyable stay and in particular, enjoyed the cultural aspects of Ubud with the villa being in a very convenient and central location. We also enjoyed having access to a dedicated path at the rear of the villa allowing access to the local supermarket and surrounding eateries. We were mindful and respectful at all times that this was also someone's home.

Nous avons passé un séjour fantastique dans cette maison, qui offre un cadre idyllique et donne l’impression de vivre en pleine jungle, et pourtant très proche des commerces et restaurants. Juli a été notre driver pendant notre séjour et nous a fait découvrir des restaurants incroyables, nous à recommandé de superbes endroits.Le petit déjeuner était varié, délicieux, et l’endroit est très bien entretenu, y compris la piscine.C’est vraiment un endroit parfait pour explorer Ubud et sa région, nous reviendrons avec grand plaisir !

Belle villa parfaitement bien placée

Cette grande villa est idéale pour visiter la region d Ubud. Typique et bien équipée, nous avons apprécié nous y reposer apres nos journees à decouvrir Ubud et sa region. Elle est très bien placée au milieu des rizieres ( vous ne pouvez y acceder qu à pied ou en scooter) et à proximité d un supermarché, de restaurants, d un studio de yoga grâce a un magnifique chemin parcourant les rizieres et le village. Un vrai bonheur de se promener à pied autour de la maison. La piscine et son jardin entouré de jungle, les salles bain exterieures, la configuration de la maison, tout cela vous plonge parfaitement dans l ambiance balinaise. Il y aurait tout de même quelques rafraichissements à faire, mais rien vous empêchant de passer un excellent sejour. Notre semaine a été aussi incroyable grâce à Juli, le manager et chauffeur de la villa qui nous a fait découvrir Bali. Sa gentillesse et sa disponibilité a rendu notre séjour magique. Il est plein d idées et de conseils. Un grand merci à Maya aussi qui nous a confectionné des petits dejeuners delicieux et à la tante de Juli qui nous à fait decouvrir la cuisine balinaise. Une excellente semaine donc, nous y retournerions avec grand plaisir.

Meandering through the narrow pathway and rice fields to the property which is off the beaten track was a daily adventure for us, felt we were in another world. Pictures could never do this place justice! WE WILL BE BACK!!

Me and my wife came to this lovely villa for our 1-year anniversary. When i say the pictures do a TERRIBLE job of capturing how beautiful the place is. All the incredible attentions to detail. The experience is one we couldn't stop talking about since returning home. Not to mention the incredible service of the staff, We threw our itinerary out the window and just went with whatever Juli the property manager and driver suggested and he did not dissapoint. Communication was prompt and super easy, mainly through WhatsApp, and from the moment we arrived until we left we felt very well taken care of. The lovely women who tended to the home making sure it was clean was also a delight and we will defintely be returning next year the first chance we get, hopefully for a much longer stay. Word of advice, a week is nowhere near enough time! Thank you for opening your home to us. 100/10 Cheers, Omar

Grand Estate in an Unusual Location

We really enjoyed our stay at Rumah Cahaya. Bruce was very responsive to our inquiries, from booking to travel arrangements, and some questions I had after checking in. This is the first property we've rented where a car could not drive up to it. I can only imangine how difficult it was to build it without a road and driveway. To get to the villa from the market, you have to walk along narrow paths/alleys. You definitely don't want to misstep along the path by the rice fields. The place was huge, especially for just the two of us. We felt very safe and the place was well equipped. It even had a massage table, of which I took advantage of ($15 USD for an hour massage). Yes, there are signs and labels just about everywhere. Bruce explains and apologizes for them in the info book. The notices are there for the mega-morons that don't know things that should be common sense. He really, really doesn't want you to touch the screens. You'll see what I mean if you stay there. :-) The place is a bit weathered. I was going to say run down, but given the hot and humid conditions there, everything exposed to the elements takes a beating. The entertainment system is lacking, but at least the TV works. I ended up connecting my Chromebook to the HDMI port and streamed content. It worked well enough, given where we were and the age/condition of the TV. The kitchen needs some help. Most of the drawers/cabinets either don't open or are hard to open/close. The most frustrating thing was that the pantry is located around the bar from the kitchen. So, if you're preparing something, you'll find yourself going back and forth. We ended up placing commonly used items on the bar to save us a trip to the pantry. The cold water dispenser is a lifesaver. It was nice having cool water on tap when returning from a trip. Even though there are some rough edges, we'd stay there again. It was a great value for the money as it's palatial and comfortable. Thanks, Bruce!

All around excellent choice for our stay in Ubud

Property is phenomenal! We booked almost a year out and had wonderful communication with the owner all along the way leading up to our arrival. Through the owner, we booked our transit from DPS to the property. I highly recommend Juli (driver) for all your transport needs in Ubud and area. Juli met us at the airport and took us to Ubud. We met his wife at the Bintang supermarket and from there we were on foot for about a 400 (or so) yard journey to the house. Juli and his wife helped with our bags and helped get us situated once we arrived at the house. House was wonderful. Very well designed and built. Property is lovely with the landscaping and the pool. Just a real gem. The housekeeper, Mayaa was very sweet. We ordered breakfast from her several times during our stay. Wonderful breakfast served on the front patio, looking into the forest and listening the river below. Checking out Juli had his nephew assist with getting our bags to Bintang Supermarket and then transport us to Sanur for the second week of our stay. We were thrown off at first by how to access the property. But after some quick exploration it really a fascinating area and access is unique and easy to navigate. Almost felt like hidden pathways to various unique areas. Easy walk to shops, restaurants, and attractions. We could also always access a car from Bintang if need be. Some suggestions for your trip; Bintang Supermarket is a wonderful market to provision up for your stay, explore on foot the pathways and trails will give you a greater appreciation of the region, download “Grab”. With Grab you can get a car, order food to be delivered and many other great features. We have used both in Ubud and in Sanur. Wonderful app to have had on our trip. Enjoy your stay at Rumah Cahaya, you will be extremely happy and leave with wonderful memories!
