About this property

Peaceful Country Comfort W Panoramic Views of Big Creek Valley

Relax in the comfort of a full-size 2 bedroom, 2 bath luxury 2nd floor apartment with separate entrance for your convenience and privacy. Enjoy the quiet country life with panoramic views of Big Creek Valley from the bay window in your living room, or sip a favorite beverage on the spacious balcony adjoining the King room. Feel free to enjoy our large lawn, take a walk along our woods or enjoy an evening fire in the fire pit.

Our home is situated on the side of a small hill overlooking an active farming area with farmers fields and pastures giving way to rolling wooded hills in the distance. Enjoy a bicycle or motorcycle ride or quiet drive along paved country roads, or relax in the yard or on your balcony with a good book and a favorite beverage.

Wintertime sports activities are nearby with cross country and downhill skiing, tubing and snowboarding at Fort McCoy, cross country at the golf course in Sparta, and downhill at Mount La Crosse. Snowmobile trails abound! You and the kids can enjoy sledding on the mild slope of the hill right behind your apartment, build snowmen in the yard, etc. Try your hand at ice-fishing on Perch Lake or Lake Neshonoc or skating at the Sparta Hockey Rink or one of the outdoor rinks at Memorial Park in Sparta... or just snuggle in and stay warm in the apartment.

The apartment is attached to our home with a separate entrance for your convenience. Sound buffers between our living spaces mean we can't hear you and you can't hear us.

RECLAIMED CHARM
A few years ago a storm blew over an enormous elm tree I climbed as a kid. It landed on the corner of an early 1900's granary. The owner chose not to repair it and allowed us to take it down for the salvaged lumber. You'll find that reclaimed lumber throughout the apartment. Wooden floors were reworked from the granary flooring. Wainscot, trim and wood ceilings were made from the siding. Shelves and benches that adorn the apartment were made from refashioned roofing boards. Table, work station and vanity tops were made from wall studs, beams and boards. Nail holes, knots and blemishes remain visible in the wood giving the finished pieces a unique and beautiful character.

Building our Vacation Rental apartment using reclaimed wood, inspired us to start a "green" business. Used Anew is operated primarily on site. Guests can take a tour of our Show Home & Shoppe, just down the hill, to see many of the products and features we make from reclaimed wood and other materials. As Used Anew, we've taken apart unwanted buildings in the area, saving what we can of the vintage materials. Then, working with area Amish craftsmen and our own in-house ThingMakers, we produce flooring, accent wall and ceiling options, kitchen cabinets, furniture and decor - all from reclaimed materials!
Along the way, we also accumulate antiques and collectibles, and make these available in the Show Home & Shoppe, as well.
SO, don't forget to ask about Used Anew and request a visit to the Show Home & Shoppe!

We had a great time. It was a very cozy place and the hosts were very welcoming. It also felt very private even though the apartment was attached to the main house. We would definitely stay again!

Great Stay

This is a great stay. I must admit we were skeptical about an apartment setting but found our stay great. It is very clean, quiet, and has everything you need. The views of the valley are some of the best. The owners are very friendly and nice to visit with.

Beautiful rural Wisconsin!

We had a great time. The bay window especially and balcony off the largest bedroom offered daily spectacular views of God’s creation. The tall and open and shower was nice along with jacuzzi. The hosts were very accommodating and communicated in a timely fashion.

Well-designed and equipped apartment with excellent hosts!

We will look forward to returning to this property for future bike trips in the Sparta area. We didn't need anything that wasn't there and found the place perfect for three women looking to reconnect. Beautiful location, enough restaurants nearby, and the bike trail is second to none for amateurs like us. Enjoyed touring the hosts' on-site business, "Used Anew."

An excellent place to stay

Our stay was six weeks long, from July 1st to August 15th, Lu and Larry were great, they even gave us fresh veggies from their garden. The apartment has a wonderful view of the valley, farmland and mountains. Quiet, clean, well-stocked and comfortable. If we could leave a ten-star review, we would. when we return to Sparta, Wisconsin we will stay here again. A perfect vacation!

Quiet, clean, beautiful, friendly

We're regulars -- meaning about once a year for the past five or six years. It's always a great place. Very quiet, beautiful country setting, perched up on a hill. Apartment is clean, fully equipped, with handsomely designed and uniquely crafted woodwork and furniture. Larry and Lu are gracious, respectful and accomplished people, and have always made us feel at home. We'll be back!

Feels like home

We enjoyed our "first annual fall family fun night" at Larry and LuAnns. It was beautiful and perfect for the 6 of us. Loved having the space and personal touches. The binder had lots of good information and has the answers to any questions you may have. Full kitchen had everything we needed. Thank you

Great dog friendly vrbo

The owners live below the apartment and were available at a phone call, but we’re not the least bit intrusive. Larry was very friendly and help me navigate the area to accomplish my purpose for being there. The kitchen was very well stocked with cooking utensils and dishes. The apartment was so interesting and unique. There was enough linens for an army! Definitely a winner! We will stay again when we visit family in the area.

Quiet Country Rental

Very clean & well kept 2BR/2Bath apartment. Ideal central location if you are in the area bicycling the 4 Trails. We did the Trails in sections going out and back driving to trailheads to start. Our longest drive was about an hour and a half to a trailhead. Loved the large Jacuzzi tub soak after a long day on the bike. LuAnn & Larry were wonderful hosts. Just a few miles from Sparta and access to the interstate and major roads.

Beautiful people and a beautiful home

Larry and Lu are wonderful hosts! They greeted us with a warm welcome to make sure we had everything we needed (which we did) and then let us experience the apartment and land as if it was our own. Our girls (6 & 8) cried when we left... they want to "move in." For anyone looking to enjoy the beautiful things and people in life... drive to Sparta and stay with Larry and Lu.

Lovely, well built and well stocked apartment. Very comfortable and private.

Larry and LuAnn have created a very nice space. They've thought of everything anyone could need to cook, relax, and enjoy. I visited with two friends and we enjoyed the views; were able to prepare our meals using the well stocked kitchen; enjoyed visiting the antique shop - where to our surprise - one of us found a child's rocker she had been hunting for; we enjoyed a leisurely walk to the historic Methodist church down the road and the accompanying cemetery (interesting to guess stories, see dates, see military markers etc.,) and just visit and relax. Many thanks! Very easy to reserve, find and enjoy.

Great “Meet In the Middle” Spot

The property is a fun, family business that is drenched in history and earth friendly. The unit we stayed in is Attached to the main house, but you have no idea the owners are there unless you need them. It was clean, comfy, a gallery of fine repurposed wood throughout. Comfy beds, fun bathrooms and a picture window that displays Mother Nature’s glory. We watched a big storm move through and a rainbow at the end. The kitchen and bathrooms are well stocked with basic needs AND grilling and pets are allowed! Did I mention clean yet. We met, our daughter who came from U of Minnesota, there. It was 2.5 hrs. What a nice place to take deep breath as a family. Thank you for the experience! We’ll be back!

Short Respite

My boyfriend and I schedule a one-night stay at this VRBO apartment. It had a private entrance and a cooking area which is what we wanted. I was thrilled to find that the kitchen had a pull-out with four bins for trash and recycling. In the evening we got a campfire going in the fire pit and, later, grilled some meat on the gas grill. The view of the valley was incredible. It included neighboring farms, a couple of roads and a little white church. We took a walk around on the country roads the morning before check out. This place was incredibly clean and they supplied soap, shampoo, conditioner and ample towels in both bathrooms. The coffee pot, toaster, microwave, dishwasher and stove top were all in working order. The king bed was comfortable. I would stay here again.

This is the place best to stay if you want to get away in the peace and quiet of rural Wisconsin. Larry and LuAnn greeted us with a warm welcome when we arrived, and it felt like we'd known them forever. The space was comfortable for the 4 of us, with ample room to make meals, lots of windows to see the beautiful countryside (and watch the storms come in!), comfortable beds...I could go on...a place to grill, a fire pit...Check-in and check-out was easy. I highly recommend this place for anyone's next getaway!

Lu and I know that where we stay when we travel can dramatically affect how much we enjoy our entire visit. We've learned that having a comfortable, relaxing (and sometimes romantic) place to call our 'home on the road' is as important as choosing what we'll do with our time. We've designed this space with YOUR comfort and relaxation in mind. Our home is Travel Green Certified. We heat and cool with a geothermal system. We've made our home and your apartment as energy efficient as we can. We also operate a business called 'Used Anew'. Guests can visit our on-site Show Home & Shoppe where we feature multiple ways we repurpose reclaimed materials in every room, AND discover affordable antiques and collectibles throughout. Considering a remodel project back home? You can take your time browsing the Show Home, make selections and have us ship the materials to you!

Why they chose this property

We love the country! It's so peaceful and quiet here in the Big Creek Valley. The views of active farms and majestic wooded hills are spectacular any time of year. We've come home to Wisconsin after more than a decade away. Here on the hillside, overlooking the farm where I grew up, it feels a little like we're on vacation every day! We decided to share this experience with you, and so we've made this luxurious full-size apartment for you to use, for a few days, a week, or longer if you wish.

What makes this property unique

When our neighbors had a tree go down on their granary, we made arrangements to deconstruct the building so we could use the materials when we built the apartment. We remilled the flooring and used the siding to make beadboard for the bedroom ceilings and wainscot in the living room. We made tables, vanity tops and work desk from wall studs. You'll see reclaimed wood throughout the apartment. We love how it turned out (and this project was the catalyst that encouraged us to start Used Anew). The apartment is comfortable and functional and the rural setting yields a slower pace in a quiet space where you can wind down from your busy day. During the growing and harvesting seasons we enjoy watching the farming activities all around us as our neighbors work the fields and harvest their crops. We frequently spot Bald Eagles and other wildlife from our windows or when we're out enjoying the yard. On cloudless nights, you'll enjoy the lack of light pollution. The only lights you'll see for miles will be a few neighbors' yard lights and an occasional passing vehicle on the road. You may not have realized just how many stars are visible in the night sky!
