We are a family of 6 adults and 4 young children ages 2 - 7. We loved the home and location. Beautiful, quiet, peaceful, clean, with a lovely heated pool. We also took the kids to a farm and strawberry picking and other fun activities. Visited Shaker village and Hudson as well, all 30 minutes or less away. Mitch was extremely helpful and responded to our questions right away!
This home was absolutely beautiful and so very comfortable - inside and out! Its the perfect place for a family (or friend) gathering. It has everything you need for good sleep, gourmet meals, games and exercise, and creating memories. Mitch was kind and flexible and easily available. W
This property had absolutely everything for a peaceful and relaxing getaway from the city. We enjoyed the pool, fire pit, well-equipped kitchen, and beautiful scenery. We went on several great hikes, enjoyed picking our own berries, apples, and tomatoes at a local farm, and loved eating local meat and produce. Highly recommend.

PRIVATE NATURE FAMILY GETAWAY
First off, the owners were so easy to deal with and they were very kind and understanding. Second, the property is beautiful. Quiet, stunning nature, great outdoor pool, great indoor and outdoor options for families to eat together. Third, there are so many places to visit, all within 30 minutes drive, from Ramblewild to many apple orchards to Jiminy Peak to OMI INternational Arts Center to fishing to hiking to Farms to county fairs to Lebanon Valley Speedway to theatre... tons to do... but would be fine enjoying the pool, backyard, quiet, nature of this beautiful home.

Perfect Upstate Getaway!
We enjoyed a perfect long weekend upstate at this beautiful, thoughtfully prepared house. This was a perfect getaway for us given the house felt remote and secluded but offered all the amenities, and more, that we normally expect. The house was in great condition and was constructed in a way that was perfect for us in that the three sets of two bedrooms were on different floors and all were tucked away from the main living space which was great for us given we have small children. We were able to hang out both early and late w/out bothering the kids. The house was well stocked and had literally everything we needed. We also enjoyed trips to the country store and had a number of nice meals downtown. I highly recommend this property and hope to visit again.

Amazing House!
This house was perfect for a short getaway with my group. Everyone had loads of fun with the pool, the fully stocked kitchen, firepit, stocked pool house/kitchen, and outdoor grills. The ice machine was clutch! The house is exactly as pictured and described. You won't need much supplies if you take this house except for your clothes, food, and love of fun! Julie and Mitchell were responsive and helpful throughout the rental process. The separate outdoor and indoor music sound system was a nice touch to allow the home bodies and outdoor fanatics to enjoy two different types of atmosphere. The house catered to my eclictic group of friends but everyone had a great time all together. I would recommend this house for a group of friends and families. Although with the open pool and pond, i would not recommend for families with very young toddlers, maybe it's a good place for adults to let loose and relax for a short getaway without the kids. We'd definitely go back!

Fantastic Vacation
My family and I rented this beautiful home in Old Chatham the week of the Fourth of July. We had an amazing time there, the home and the ground are beautiful, and we look forward to returning soon.
Our group was comprised of four couples, with one child per couple, varying in age from 5 to 13 months old. The house itself is incredible and is more than capable of comfortably accommodating us all. The living room is large with high ceilings, a fireplace and lots of natural light. The same can be said for the gourmet kitchen (sans the fireplace) which is well-equipped, has lots of windows, and a skylight. If you like cooking, you'll love this kitchen.
There's also an outdoor kitchen with two grills, one that is tied into the gas line and one that can use charcoal, down by the in-ground, heated pool. The surrounding area is beautifully maintained. It's such a pleasure to be out in the sun, in the pool, surrounded by so much greenery. We were fortunate that after a day and a half of rain, the weather cleared up and we spent the rest of the week in the pool. Additionally, the pool house is adjacent to the outdoor kitchen, which gives you an area to prepare food and clean up. There's a sink, dishwasher, refrigerator, bathroom, wine cooler, washer and dryer conveniently located in this pool house. There's also an outdoor shower to use before and after the pool.
When you're indoors, you can play pool or ping pong, or play any of the many board games they have stocked in the lower level. There are two bedrooms on this floor and a room with a large screen TV and many DVDs and surround sound speakers. The master bedroom is on the main floor and it has a beautiful bathroom. There's one more large bedroom on this floor and two more upstairs and the house has central air-conditioning.
In addition to everything that the house has to offer, the surrounding towns are equally appealing. There are a few shops and minutes away from the house, and a little further away [about 20 mins] you'll find a supermarket, restaurants, cafes, and a great independent bookstore.
Overall, this was an incredible experience. Our family had a fantastic time there and it was the perfect escape from the city. Julie and Mitch were a pleasure to work with and always available when any questions arose. We look forward to coming back next year!

Amazing getaway
We rented this house in upstate NY in late June 2012 for a family reunion/getaway. The family is a family of 16 and included people of all ages (the oldest being 55 and the youngest being 3). We wanted a place within 2 - 2 1/2 hours driving distance of NYC with full amenities to keep everyone engaged and happy while providing space so that we were not on top of each other.
This Old Chatham home is pretty amazing. There is an outdoor heated pool which was the central gathering place for the weekend. The pool is fairly long and has a shallow and a deep end (probably about 8' or so). Near the pool is a professional grilling area with a gas grill and a charcoal grill along with a fully-equipped pool house with fridge, food preparation area, wine fridge. There is also an outdoor music system and you can connect your ipod/iphone to the system. The pool area can be accessed through the pool house or the porch. Kids and adults had a fabulous time in the pool for the entire weekend. Except for brief periods of wind and some rain, the weather was very cooperative. The pool looks on to well-tended lawns where a golf course has been set up. There is also a hammock and goal post for soccer or such.
The inside of the house is large and well equipped. There are 6 bedrooms and several bathrooms. The house has a pool table, ping pong table, large screen TV with several hundred DVDs. The house is fairly new and has been maintained to a very high standard. There is lots of useful stuff around such as pool toys, pool chairs, etc. There are a few bikes in the garage. It was a little cool on the Saturday night (perhaps 55 degrees) so a few of us went out there and started a fire in the outdoor firepit. Its very quiet and dark there - you are definitely in the country - and it turned out to be a memorable evening with some wine and music. All the kids had stuff to do and were happy. It was nice to have lots of things to do but also have some space so there was also some relaxation involved. There are a couple of restaurants a couple of miles away - one is the Old Chatham Store and there is a pub across the street.
I would highly recommend this house. Bear in mind that this is not an investment property and the owners visit there frequently - it is lived in. It is a very high spec house with wonderful features and a lot to do. Mitch and family are very nice people and easy to deal with. We will certainly plan to be back here.

About the host
Hosted by Julie Appel and Mitch Gordon
We are a NYC-based family that built this house as a refuge from our hectic life in the City. We selected this area because it offered a high level of natural beauty, excellent biking roads and NYS rail trail, great recreational options and fabulous cultural institutions. We built the house using the best materials available, with great attention to detail; with the goal of creating an oasis of casual luxury. Although the house is in a rural town, we are a short drive to Hudson, Lenox (Tanglewood), Jiminy Peak (skiing), golf, lots of excellent restaurants (although we mostly stay home and cook), indoor tennis, and some great hiking trails, sports activities (skining/Tennis/gold/basketball/ pickle ball) and cultural venues Art OMI, PS 21, Tanglewood, regional theater...)
We also travel a bit and rent our house to other families who we think will appreciate our house as much as we do.
Why they chose this property
We selected this particular site because we wanted a quiet private setting with on which to build a great family retreat.
What makes this property unique
This house was built for "getting away" and relaxing. It is completely private and offers first class indoor and outdoor amenities for the family interested in relaxing, reconnecting, hanging out, cooking, swimming, hiking, riding and numerous indoor and outdoor activities. The area is ideal for road biking, is close to "America's top summer cultural center" - The Berkshires and does this with a casual luxury that will resonate with discriminating guests. We also have high speed (fiber) internet.
