About this property
Escape to the Lone Star Loft
A perfect place to escape to, when you want to get away from...(you fill in the blank)! For us Texans, we flee the summer heat.
Built in 1906 as the First State Bank building, this property has gone through many alterations to meet the needs of the small farming community.
Located in the heart of the Northern plains it is perfect for a writer's retreat. This second floor loft in the center of a very quiet, very friendly, very small town is just where you will want to be.
Take some friends to enjoy the slower pace or use the second bedroom as a studio or office. Find whimsical decor and fun elements that attempt to retain a bit of the original bank offices this second floor was originally built to contain.
2 bedrooms (1 king and 1 queen) & 2 bathrooms will sleep 4-6 (queen sleeper in the living area).
Sorry, but 22 entry steps are not handicapped friendly (use the elevator we’ve installed) but they do act as a built in fitness center!
The town of Kulm, North Dakota has a small grocery store, a hardware store, a gas station, a post office, a bar, a restaurant and a seasonal tasty-freeze. Plan to cook some of your meals in our well appointed kitchen and please purchase locally.
Beautiful farmland, fabulous fishing, a well maintained nine hole golf course, and salt-of-the-earth people will encourage you to make this a regular retreat. Go to rest, go to write, go to escape the rush of your regular world and remember what a slower more thoughtful time was like.
No pets. Three night minimum preferred.
All Non-Kulm Resident Guests:
When you stay at the Loft you may send us your receipts from the Kulm Grocery and we will refund you 10% of your purchases. Thanks for shopping locally.

About the host
Hosted by Mary Liechty

My husband & I have been coming here for a long, long time. In fact, he grew up here. Over the years we brought our children back to see family. We visited for many holidays enjoying the parades, the fun small town atmosphere and the freedom our kids felt from urban life. Finally, our daughter met a young man from here and married him. So, now we come back to visit our grandchildren too.
We have always loved the great brick detailing on this building and were delighted when our daughter told us the building was for sale. We remodeled the first floor and it has multiple uses but we reserved the second floor to make a place we would enjoy staying.
We hope you will love what we have created as much as we do.

Why they chose this property
We love the brick work and we both really love the history. Interesting story: my husband's family is from this town and his mother grew up on a farm nearby. When she was young the travel during the winter was too difficult so she stayed in town with a friend. It was in this building in a small apartment upstairs that she lived during the week going home to the farm on the weekends. How cool is that?
