About this property

Nkanyi House-luxury eco-friendly house on a wildlife estate near Kruger Park.

Conveniently situated in the heart of South Africa’s wildlife region, Nkanyi House is the perfect base for you to enjoy your dream vacation. The world-famous Kruger National Park is only a forty minute drive away and the Blyde River Canyon, just thirty minutes. Numerous other tourist and wildlife activities are nearby. Located on a secure private wildlife estate, the house has the benefit of offering privacy and nature, while being just a few minutes’ drive from shopping and dining in the town of Hoedspruit. You’ll love the abundant outdoor space including large covered deck, private pool and boma (fire pit). With room for six and plenty of space for gathering, the home provides the ideal opportunity for you to connect with nature and each other.
Imagine returning from a day of viewing some of South Africa’s incredible wildlife, hot but exhilarated. You rinse the dust off in the outdoor shower, before jumping into the private pool to finish cooling off. As the sun sets, you swap stories of the day’s adventures over drinks on the deck, while the aroma of dinner grilling over charcoal fills the air. Does this sound like the vacation you are looking for?
Now all you need to do is book your vacation at Nkanyi House.
As you enter the driveway, you may see an impala or warthog scamper away. The wildlife on the estate roams freely, but does not include predators, making it safe to walk and cycle. Open the front door and step inside the great room, with its open beams, high ceilings and large sliding glass doors that allow indoor and outdoor spaces to become one. Step out onto one of several patios. From here you can gaze out at the Drakensburg Mountains, or splash in the pool. Feel the freedom of the African bush all around you.
Do you love to cook? We have paid attention to quality and details in the kitchen so that you may be able to cook delicious meals. Our house manual includes our favourite places in town to purchase everything you need for an amazing meal, including specialty food and wine shops, which only the locals know about. The large covered patio includes a traditional South African braai (BBQ) for grilling on those warm evenings.
When was the last time you shared stories around a campfire? After dinner you can gather around the boma (fire pit) and watch the stars in the Southern sky.
The primary bedroom is secluded at one end of the house and provides great mountain views, high ceilings and a private deck. Snuggle into the king-sized bed and enjoy a great night’s sleep. Get back to the wild with an outdoor shower off the large master bathroom.
Situated at the other end of the house, the two other bedrooms each have their own private patio. One bedroom has a king-sized bed and mountain views, the other offers two single beds, which can be converted into a king-sized bed, and bush views. One more bathroom, with both indoor and outdoor showers completes this wing of the house.
Looking for something unique in the market of South African vacation rentals? Nkanyi House has been built with an emphasis on environmental sustainability. Your vacation time is short and you want reliability. Nkanyi House is able to be powered entirely by solar power, providing dependable power, despite South Africa’s challenged electrical grid. During the rare days that the sun doesn’t shine, the smart technology automatically switches the house to the grid.

Great vacation!
Perfect for 2 couples. Each had a separate wing for privacy. Great room was grand and comfortable for the 4 of us. Solar was appreciated during load-shedding. Views and patios were lovely for just enjoying the natural "rough" bush, and the wildlife visited often to our delight. Close to town, restaurants and wildlife safari action. Only issue was the cold...coldest June in some time according to most. Still a "5" though. A very memorable month!

Our stay at this home was absolutely wonderful. You will not find a better location nor a better property in terms of cleanliness, attention to detail and modern conveniences provided. Communication with both the local property management staff and the owner of this property was outstanding and so very helpful. Highly recommended!

heerlijk huis

About the host

We are a Canadian/ South African professional couple who take every opportunity that we can get to leave out busy work-life behind and escape to the South African bush. We have traveled throughout Southern Africa and beyond, but instantly felt at home in Hoedspruit.

Why they chose this property

Do you feel the call of the African bush?
We certainly do. Though we have traveled throughout the world, nowhere draws us in like rural South Africa, so much so that we built our second home there in 2016. The friendly people, the food and wine, the wildlife and nature unlike anywhere else on earth; South Africa has everything that we love, in abundance. Ed is originally from South Africa and Annette has traveled and worked throughout the continent. Together we have explored every corner of South Africa. We were drawn to Hoedspruit and the Zandspruit Estate in particular, because it allowed us to experience South African bush living, while still having the conveniences of nearby shops and restaurants. Ed is also an amateur pilot and relished the opportunity to be able to fly in Africa. Annette loved the fact that the wildlife on Zandspruit still allowed for walking, jogging and cycling on the Estate.
We chose this building site for its mature trees and great mountain views. We just love sitting on the deck with a cup of tea, or glass of wine, listening to the many birds or watching for wildlife roaming by, while staring at the nearby mountains. When we are not in Hoedspruit, we rent our home out to others, so that they too can have the experience of life in the African bush.

What makes this property unique

Designing and building this house ourselves has allowed us to get everything just the way we wanted it. From the expansive indoor and outdoor living areas with amazing views of the mountains, to the outdoor showers that really allow you to get close to nature, Nkanyi House is our piece of tranquility in the African bush.
We love the attention to detail in the decorating, like the headboard built from an old Indian door, to the amazing dining room light fixture that Ed spent half a year creating.
We also love to cook and created a kitchen that cooks will love. No more dull, cheap knives or minimal supplies. Ours is a kitchen that you can easily put out a fabulous meal. Explore African recipes with our specially chosen selection of cookbooks.
Being South African, Ed had to have a great braai (BBQ). The outdoor cooking area includes a sink and large built-in braai, making it a great place to grill for any group.
Environmental sustainability is important to us. So was having consistent power. We therefore chose to invest in a high-grade solar system that allows the house to be almost entirely powered by the sun, with the option of switching to the grid on extended cloudy days. This makes Nkanyi House unique in the region.
We are sure that you will love spending time at Nkanyi House just as much as we do!
