This condo was well equipped and met all our needs. It was clean and centrally located for easy access to Ouray activities. Our favorite amenities were the back deck grilling /eating area and the view from the large living room windows. We would definitely stay here again.

About the host

Hosted by Laura K. Benton

Host profile image
Mountain Adventure Retreats was founded on a deep-rooted passion for the San Juan Mountains and a shared commitment to excellence in hospitality and property care. The venture began in 2013, sparked by Laura’s long-standing love for Ouray County. A lifelong Coloradan who first discovered the Ridgway and Ouray area in 2001, Laura brought with her an extensive background in business, marketing, and travel management. Her years of experience in the ski and property management industries across North America’s premier destinations provided the foundation for a company built on community and exceptional service.

In 2020, the team expanded when Steve moved from Dallas to join Laura in Ouray County. Steve’s arrival marked the beginning of a new chapter for the company, bringing forty-three years of high-level construction management experience to the team. Having served as Vice President for some of the nation’s top General Contractors, he integrated professional expertise in budgeting, procurement, and project oversight into the company’s property maintenance and caretaking operations. His own connection to the state dates back to 1993, when participating in Ride the Rockies ignited a lifelong passion for Colorado’s dramatic landscapes.

Today, Laura and Steve work side-by-side to lead a dedicated team of professionals focused on delivering top-tier property care. When they aren't overseeing the finer details of a guest's stay or maintaining local residences, they are often found embracing the outdoors together. Whether they are cycling, skiing, hiking, or fishing, they remain inspired by the ever-changing seasons and the rugged beauty of the San Juan Mountains.

Why they chose this property

The neighborhood surrounding Alaskarado on North Oak Street is a peaceful enclave that perfectly balances the ruggedness of the San Juan Mountains with effortless access to the heart of Ouray. Guests enjoy a highly walkable lifestyle, with a scenic riverfront path located directly across the street that leads directly into the center of town. The atmosphere is one of quiet adventure—mornings are often spent watching the sunlight hit the towering red rock cliffs, while evenings offer a short stroll to the town's historic district.

This location serves as an ideal basecamp for outdoor enthusiasts, as it is situated within a 10-minute walk of the world-renowned Ouray Hot Springs Pool and the entrance to the Perimeter Trail, a six-mile loop that circles the town and showcases hidden waterfalls. For those visiting in the winter, the area is just a short distance from the famous Ouray Ice Park. Despite its proximity to these major attractions and the vibrant Main Street—filled with Victorian architecture, local boutiques, and breweries—the neighborhood maintains a calm, residential feel that is very quiet at all hours.

What makes this property unique

Alaskarado stands out from surrounding accommodations by offering a rare combination of elevated privacy and a versatile, multi-level layout that feels more like a primary residence than a standard vacation rental. Unlike the traditional hotel rooms or historic lodges nearby, this third-floor condo features an expansive living area that flows into a spacious upstairs loft. This architectural design, complete with a Captain’s Bunk and a dedicated entertainment center, provides a distinct secondary zone for relaxation or children that is difficult to find in more conventional layouts. Furthermore, the property boasts two private scenic porches, offering multiple vantage points to enjoy the Uncompahgre River and the surrounding canyon walls from a peaceful, elevated perspective.

The property’s location on the quiet northern edge of Ouray provides a more tranquil experience while maintaining superior walkability to the town’s primary attractions. While many visitors must navigate the traffic and noise of Main Street, guests here can enjoy a level, scenic riverfront stroll that leads directly to the Ouray Hot Springs Pool and the heart of the historic district. Because the home is intended for the exclusive use of your party, you avoid the shared lobbies and common areas typical of other mountain retreats, ensuring complete privacy throughout your stay. This blend of secluded residential comfort and effortless trail access makes it a premier choice for those wanting to experience the "Switzerland of America" without the crowds.
