Thank you so much for your review, you were great guests. Please keep us on your travel plans for the future. The house is over 130 years old, and we have tried to keep the character of a 1870 home with some modern additions. The air hockey table adds fun on a rainy day.

History preserved

This lovely 1870s home has been masterfully preserved and I was even able to hear quite a bit about the homes history which is so much fun! The house is spacious offering all the comforts necessary to really rest and relax but also 23 minutes from The shrine of the Grotto of the redemption if you're looking for adventure. The hosts were some of the kindest folks, most accommodating!

My husband and I love historic houses and enjoyed updating the Swetting house. We travel and enjoy staying in VBROs along the way.

Why they chose this property

Thorington was once the Main St in Algona and then became the “silk stocking” street where all the wealthy homes were built. It is one of the most enjoyable streets to walk in Algona. Beautiful lawns and wooded areas. Or just relax on the front porch or the additional back porch. A short walk takes you to the historic downtown. Many small specialty shops. Pet Kingdom offer pet supplies and Bumdiddly offers organic soaps, teas, etc. Fun puzzles for all ages. Home Store and RSoffer vintage and collectibles. Feedmill opens with coffee, bakery goods and sandwiches at 6am. I great lunch menu with gluten free options. Billie Jo has steak and full menu and the Axe house has wonderful Phillies and sweet potato fries.

What makes this property unique

This home was built in 1879 with Italianate architecture. It was built with bricks made in Algona and the walls are 18 inches thick. The house has gone through many transitions with each owner. In the 50s it was a boarding house. Where the laundry is was a very small kitchen. You could cook and grab milk out of the frig and wash dishes all at the same time. The gardens in front of the house hold dahlias and other flowers. There is a small koi pond to enjoy the soft sounds of flowing water. The garden in back holds many munchies for our guest to pick and try.
