About Us:
The Hideaway is a historic 235 year old former Grist Mill sitting in the Hollow on Butternut Creek. Once producing buckwheat flour and cornmeal in partnership with Pillsbury, operating as a general store for the locals of New Lisbon, this property has had a rich and unique history serving as a community nexus for generations.

Over the last 3 years, we have been revitalizing this beautiful property to accommodate a new chapter of visitors and travelers who can add to its story.

Stay at the Mill and enjoy your private oasis. Backed by creeks, bridges, brooks, great forests, and open fields—an idyllic place for families, groups, couples, or even solo travelers to experience the eccentric and beautiful history that this home and its land offer, while becoming a part of its timeline.

Your stay grants access to the entire house and the surrounding 2 acres, where the house and creek are situated. Enjoy both indoor and outdoor rest.

Indulge in the surrounding wildlife, dip in the creek, and sit on the lawn amid over 50 species of flowers and trees. There are several outdoor seating areas for relaxing and sharing meals and memories, with both classic and modern outdoor grills to define your experience. Walk through the woods and fields, or take a 7-minute drive to Gilbert Lake. Retire with a fire, using the pit for outdoor evening gatherings (and s'mores!), or light the indoor wood stove and enjoy the warmth with a book or film, on the couch. The built-in western bar at the entry (constructed from leftover materials from the original Mill itself) is a fantastic area for card games, to cocktails.

Featuring the original 12-foot-wide window, our sitting area is perfect for morning coffee/tea, nature observance, meditation, or artistic creation. The adjacent entertainment area seats the whole family or friend group comfortably; equipped with an HD projector, drop-down screen with surround sound speakers, and ample accounts with popular streaming services for movies/shows not in our library. Video game systems, books, and board games can also be found on our shelves. There are options for everyone, including young ones! But please be encouraged to bring your artistic endeavors and hobbies as well—the Mill has always called to the creative at heart. Be inspired.

The kitchen is stocked with traditional tools, equipment, and utensils needed to cook an elaborate meal. The extra-long farm table comfortably sits up to 10 for meals.
The second floor sleeps 8 adults comfortably. There is a master bedroom with 1 queen-sized bed, and a connected bedroom with a lounge area that has: 2 queen beds, a queen futon, and a sectional sofa. Bedside tables and dressers can be found alongside each bed.

Please note: the bathroom (equipped with a washer/dryer and walk-in shower) is accessible on the main floor only. Bedrooms are on the second floor, accessible via stairs.

Built in 1790, the house features many idiosyncrasies of a historic and well-loved home. We are dedicated to maintaining the integrity, charm, and history of this incredible 235-year-old property; part of that includes rolling/tilted floors from age. Structurally secure and beautifully modeled, the floors reflect the time and use of the space, consistent with older homes. Please be mindful of this upon booking.

While we provide all the modern amenities and comforts you would expect from a vacation rental, part of the Mill’s charm is appreciating the antiquity of the home. We are constantly working to improve and innovate, and it is always exciting when more people share in creating our history.

Intended as an inspiring place for artists, creatives, and thinkers; the Mill is perfect for work and personal retreats; available for both film and music production, weddings, and events (inquire for further information); or simply a haven for the avid peace seeker, nature/outdoor enthusiast looking to indulge in the serene wildlife surrounding the property.

A popular destination for those looking to visit the Baseball Hall of Fame and All-Star Village in Cooperstown, being only 25 minutes away, tournament families regularly stay at the Mill and are always welcome.

Located in New Lisbon, we are minutes from the heart of town and the town of Morris. The Mill is a 20-minute drive from Oneonta.
Please note that this home opened with care and intention. It is lived in, and its character reflects that. You are welcome to stay and are kindly asked to respect it as your own. We are a pet-friendly home; your pets are welcome, too.
See you soon!

Our stay was great! It’s beautiful out there. 2 window a/c’s worked perfectly for us. I needed Robert’s assistance and he went out of his way to help me with something that wasnt to do with the cabin. You will enjoy your visit and I assure Robert is the perfect host!

FANTASTIC!! Our family stayed at the Mill during our youngest son’s week at All Star Village. The ballpark is only 19 minutes away from ASV and the same to Cooperstown/Dreams Park. There were five of us that stayed, but we could have easily fit 10… the house is large. We swam in the stream and even went to a nearby lake and caught bass. We met the owner and learned about the property. The house and its history was a great addition to the trip! Highly recommended!!!

Beautiful, serene and unique! The perfect getaway to relax and unwind. My husband and I stayed 4 nights with our dog and enjoyed every moment. The property is incredibly private and makes you feel like you're in your own secluded garden. The house is so unique and very cool to think on how old the building is and that it was once a working grist mill. It was a perfect blend of the old and modern. Robert has obviously put a lot of thought into making this a comfortable home, with many personal touches throughout. And a hammock? Inside? Now that was pretty great. Communication with Robert was above and beyond. We hope to stay again!

Fantastic Stay

My husband and I plus our 2 dogs, as well as my inlaws, their 2 dogs and baby all stayed for Memorial Day weekend. We all loved the house and the property. The house is very rustic and unique and has interesting decorations and furnitings. It rained all weekend but with all the windows and stunning views, we were never bored. We spent our time cooking and playing board games. Check in instructions were super easy. Robert was easily accessible via VRBO for any questions throughout our stay. The stairs are very steep which is something to be aware of but we managed to carry the baby and an elderly dog up and down with no trouble. Robert has a really cool projector screen set up as well as speakers for music. Being next to the creek, we did see some garder snakes and a water snake on our last day but that is to be expected.

I'm originally from Boston but have lived in New York City for since i was 19. I work in small business and design and spent a good amount of time working on music for fun on the side. Being able to share this space as we continue to modify and restore is the most gratifying way to celebrate the work we do.

Why they chose this property

I found the listing for the mill a few years ago, not knowing anything about the town or county at all. What drew me in was the house itself and the land it sits on. It certainly needed some work but I knew the potential was there to revitalize a beautiful home with beautiful land. To be able to retreat from the city with friends and family for peaceful getaways, and on top of that share it with travelers from all around the country(via Cooperstown visits primarily!) was something I didnt want to pass up.

What makes this property unique

You are staying at a historical location! Built in 1790, the gristmill and saw mill across the bridge(no longer standing) were a few of the many mills that New Lisbon was known for. The mill produced buckwheat flour for companies such as Pillsbury. It was also home to a baseball history writer (John Durant) and mystery novelist, among many others over the years.

The open concept of the house gives it a very old fashioned and western feel, and allows you to get beautiful views of nature from inside. You have your own private oasis with a babbling brook running down the side and a creek in front.
