About this property

Three Sister Meadow "Sweet" Retreat

Our private Meadow Sweet is an independent dwelling connected to the main house. It is attached like a duplex but has it own private entrance and is completely self sufficient. A locked barn door separates the homes. Parking area is shared with the main house parking.

The private entrance front door is closest to the driveway platform. There are three stairs to climb and the lockbox for the keys is inside the jamb of that door. From Memorial Day - October you can expect the front door to be left unlocked for easy access and the keys inside on the hook. In the winter months we will provide you with the code to the lockbox the day you arrive. If arriving after dark we can leave the outside lights on for you if requested. We recently upgraded our wifi equipment and wiring system with a private company so guests can work from the home ( Zoom if needed) in this remote setting. In the entrance foyer there is utility room with laundry and sofa sleeper linen is kept here. There are also cozy for night sky star watching in the meadow.

Our spacious great room is the main living space of the Meadow Sweet and is a 21x 21 with 10 foot ceilings. It has an open kitchen/dining /living room design and offers sunlight from north, south and west windows. The gas fireplace in the main room provides additional heat in the spring, winter, and fall. There are two sofas including a Lazy Boy queen pull out sleeper for additional guests. South facing patio doors leads to a new large deck that wraps around that west corner of the house giving access to the open meadow and an outdoor furniture including another table and chairs and charcoal or gas grill. Total square footage of the space is 1000 square feet and easily accommodates four guests.

Please inquire about adding another bedroom for an additional charge.

The kitchen has a Dacor gas range (there is a large griddle for cooking pancakes, pan frying fish in the cabinet) a dishwasher, large clean fridge. There are spacious countertops and a kitchen island bar with four stools, plus a round kitchen table for dining. It is set up meals making . There is a full set of tableware, cookware, baking ware, small appliances, cutlery, and kitchen accessories most everything you might need. You are welcome to use any condiments, spices, oils, and cooking staples like flour, sugar, coffee, tea, rice, pasta and all paper products are also stocked.

Sleeping accommodations include a second floor king bedroom 21x21 with a gabled room with a north and south windows. There is comfortable king bed and sitting area, a large dresser but no closet in this room. We do have central air however cooler northern door temps and the wind of the lake 3/4 mile away keeps the property very comfortable. If you need air conditioner for allergies please consider another option as we really enjoy the fresh air and cool temps .

In the main room there is a queen size sofa sleeper for the 2 guests. A feather bed to add to the sleeper mattress for extra comfort is in the laundry as are all pillows and a down comforters etc...

Outside your patio doors there is short mowed walking trails around the property to enjoy. In the back you will see another circle of furniture and extra long picnic table in the meadow. This is a shared outdoor gathering space for anytime of day but is particularly special at sunset and for dark sky star watching.

**DETAILS TO NOTE **

***HEATING AND COOLING - the central furnace heat and air conditioning
is regulated by a NEST thermostat in the main house and also remotely. The gas fireplace in the winter is used as additional heat for the Meadow Sweet. In winter we will set the flame at a cozy comfortable level and you can adjust as needed but PLEAse read the instructions. The fireplace should not be turned down so low that the pilot extinguishes because then it has to be relight and we need to call someone in for that. There is also an electric baseboard heater in the king loft bedroom for extra cold winter nights.

***All linens, towels, tablecloths, napkins, dish towels, extra blankets, beach towels are provided. Are beds are made with cotton sheet and cotton duvets on the down comforters -

**Upon departure please strip your sheets and pillow cases and place all other used linens in the laundry room.
*** Firewood -we usually have a of stock of camp firewood for guests to use but it not a guarantee .

**OUTDOOR Fires- the meadow sweet has access to two firepit- in the front lawn there are Adirondack lawn chairs for in the front yard.. In the back of the property, a large custom forged fire pit with a sitting area to enjoy and relax.

**OUTSIDE LIGHTS***We are night sky watchers so PLEASE shut the lights off at night when you are done using them.

**GRILLING *** There is a large Weber grill and also a gas grill. We will do our best to keep the gas tank filled and we often have charcoal and lighting fluid but it not guaranteed.

***PETS- We love animals and have a Border collie named BLUE and two cats TULIP and TRUFFLE who live on the property. We love dogs and have welcomed them for years so have learned a few things and made some guidelines so that we are on the same page. Please try your best to follow these guidelines so that we can remain pet friendly.

1. Dogs must be completely house trained, no exceptions
2. Dogs must be friendly and well behaved if sharing outdoor spaces off leash. If you know your dog can get territorial or aggressive he/she should not be off lease on the property.
3. Dogs barking or growling continuously while owner's are home or away are not ready to be our guests. We realize that dog may bark initially when the pet owners leave .

4. Dogs are not allowed on furniture. We know this is hard to manage on vacation when you want to snuggle with your dog. So if you know you may not be able to enforce that rule please bring your own blankets to throw over the furniture

.***We don't expect or have the time to be cleaning animal hair off the furniture, it is very time consuming and this cost of this cleaning is not included in the cleaning fee. So please remove all dog hair yourself with the vacuum and lint brushes ( under the sink) we provide

5. Dogs that chew on furniture, rugs etc.. are not allowed
6. IF you are bringing more than one dog please we need to approve this.

7 Please put poop bags in the main garbage bin next to the green pole barn.

***GUEST ACCESS - In the winter we are usually at our house in Madison so guests will be given a code for the lock box in order to retrieve the keys.

***ARRIVAL-We want our guests to feel at ease from start to finish and encourage you to arrive at your leisure. There is lots to explore on the way up so please go with your flow. We understand travel schedules often change, this is never a problem for us. We do require guests to check in by 9pm unless otherwise approved in advance. We are often not available to greet our guests so please make yourself at home. The front door to the Meadow Sweet is the CLOSEST to the driveway. So feel free to pull your car up closest to that door, or you are also welcome to park on gravel area too .

We realize many people have driven hours to travel to door county and want to unpack, get settled in and sink in to their vacation home. We enjoy meeting our guests when our paths cross and answering question and giving recommendations. Please text me directly on my phone, you message will reach me sooner.

***PARKING -Feel free to park in our shared parking area either on the gravel or on the driveway platform. We leave this platform for our guests as it is the closet to you door. The max cars for the meadow sweet is two cars . If you want to bring a boat or trailer please ask ahead of time.

***OTHER GUESTS- We have one other rental - Three Sister's Cottage Barn, on the right when you enter the property. We also have a big green pole barn which is our project center and then the main house.

***TRAILS AND WALKING- The entire meadow in the back of the house is free space to roam. There is a walking trail, clothesline, and in the center of the meadow is a shared space with comfortable lawn furniture for lounging, a wood bench facing west and a big round coffee table for stuff . Sunsets are amazing and so are the night skies!
***OUTSIDE LIGHTS- Everyone appreciates when you turn the outdoor lights off if not using them and especially before bed. There are solar lights around the property for ambience.

***RECYCLABLES- We provide kitchen size bins lined with plastic bags located in the pantry for all recyclables. If you are emptying your own recyclables into the main BLUE LID bin by the pole barn please remember to dump them directly form the plastic bag into the bin. This is required by Going Garbage. Extended stay guests are responsible for walking their trash and recyclable to the main trash.
****COMPOSTING - We provide a small compost bin under the sink for you to throw your waste, and then also a large five gallon bucket with a lid out side on the deck. Please do not put any meat products in compost and please make sure to keep the lid on the bucket outside.

Lovely cottage
My small family (and our dog) really enjoyed staying at Kathleen’s place. Kathleen came out to greet us and was kind and charming. The layout worked great for the 3 of us and it was a nice place to relax after a fun day in Door County. It is a bit out of the main strip of Sisters Bay but is a short drive to town (about 10 minutes at the most). We hope to visit again.

Tranquil Door County meadow retreat
A comfortable, well-appointed house tucked away in a grassy meadow, but with easy access to Door County's best sand beaches. Well-stocked kitchen, great king-size bed, beautifully renovated bathroom. We'll definitely be back!

Meadow Sweet Retreat
We loved staying at this property. There was amble space for the 4 of us. Plus the kitchen was well stocked for any cooking that needed to be done. We also liked the location because it was close to Sister Bay but not full of the hustle and bustle. The sky was perfect for star gazing!

Nice property with good Initial communication. It was clean and having the laundry available was nice. There was no TV and no grill which were on the amenities list. The main part of the VRBO is nice and secluded, but one bedroom is in a hall toward the owners premises. A dog banged at the Hallway door one night at 3AM and the owner talked on speaker phone one afternoon during our stay. The upstairs bedroom got stuffy and there is no AC.

About the host

Host profile image
Kathleen- I am a Wisconsin native, graduate of UW-Madison 1983, facilitator for many years of many things, business owner, devoted wife and mother of three amazing daughters. I love puzzles, place-maker, and caretaking and always gravitate to original design, salvaging things and allowing things to reveal themselves.....

Tim Kay - December 2nd, 1960 - Sept 21, 2019 - Tim was a Madison native, father to our three daughters, beloved husband and hardworking householder. He was always an original thinker who loved to express himself though music, poetry and crafting. At home in nature in all the seasons, he enjoyed playing in all ways. He continued to bike, swim, ski and trail run through his ten year battle living with cancer. After having to retire from his 30 year engineering career in 2009 he not only learned to needlepoint while living with no kidneys on dialysis, he also became a skilled carpenter, electrician and almost plumber. His practical DIY ways activated the spirit of Three Sister's Farm to what it is today and he would be delighted to know his heart and vision is inspiring adventure and providing rest and relax today of our expanded community .

Why they chose this property

HISTORY - Tim's parents purchased a modest lakefront vacation home on Door Bluff Road in 1969 when he was nine and the second oldest of six. His mother Inger arriving ten years earlier as a UW -Madison student visiting aboard from Sweden, found this idyllic Swedish connection thriving on the northern door peninsula. Purchasing a summer cottage (SOMMARSTUGAN) with her new American husband started it all. Tim's dad Robert deepened his family's connection to the great fresh waters of Lake Michigan when he acquired a small sailboat which eventually became a large sailboat to carry the whole family crew of 8.

I was first invited to join Tim and his family eight years later in 1979 on one of their summer trips to the cottage when I was 17 and we were newly sweet-hearted . Now 45 years later after thousands of all weather hikes on Hotz trail, hundreds of amazing beach days at Newport and countless cold water life changing swims, we have the privilege of caring for our own home on Hill Road in Sister Bay.

No matter where we lived throughout our life, or how the years were unfolding, neither of us ever missed a summer lay down on the smooth white rocks at the shoreline, or hiking the humus floor of the gentle trillium woods. Enjoying the lingering long springs and cooler restorative summer air that deliciously ripens into magnificent fall freshness and color. It is a true luxury of life.

We lost Tim in 2019 to a ten year battle with cancer and now our daughters and I feel fortunate to carry on the traditions that we five laid down together with a lot of hard work, faith in each other and devotion to getting through some very hard times. Supported by families, friends we continue to go through life's progression. Sharing our land and homes with our expanded traveling community is our privilege and we treat it as so.
