About this property

Little House In Historical Setting

Charming little house on two floors in the picturesque village of Gandria with partial view of the Lake of Lugano. Completely renovated with hand-made terra cotta floors, wood stove, new bathroom and nice kitchen. Fully equipped with dishwasher, washing machine and dryer, telephone, computer with free Internet access, ironing board, bed linen and towels. The name “Casa Parrucchiere” comes from the building’s use as a barbershop 100 years ago (sign still visible on facade). The house was owned by Swiss painter Fritz Meijer), who used it to exhibit his artwork. Outside the entrance is a “pergola” (arbor) and table for two shaded by grapevines.

Special rate for longer period rental throughout winter.

About the host

We are an American-Swiss-German family with a teenage daughter and a cat (one of many in Gandria). We bought the Casa 1659 with the Appartamento Cortiletto and the house next door (Casa Parrucchiere) in 2007. The house was the home and atelier of the Swiss artist Fritz Meijer for many years. It was in complete disrepair when we bought it – the renovation happened in two different phases and definitely was not a project for the faint-hearted ...Then we did some more renovations in 2016.

Nina currently works on a development project in Africa, but Lucia (who live right next door) will great guests.

Why they chose this property

The Casa Parrucchiere ("hairdresser's house") is located in the middle of Gandria's most picturesque spot right across from the San Vigilio Church.

But why do we call it "Casa Parrucchiere" (hairdresser's house). If you look carefully, you can still see the writing “Parrucchiere” over the entrance door. 100 years back, the little house hosted the village’s hairdresser. In 1939, it became the atelier of the artist Fritz Meijer (1900-1969). After his death his family continued to sell his paintings and postcards leaving the atelier unchanged for 50 years. When we bought the house nextdoor (residence of Fritz Meijer) we fell in love with the magical atmosphere of the village and the atelier of the painter. After one-and-a-half year of extentive renovations, the Casa Parrucchiere was ready to accomodate guests.

We tried to equip the little house with everything we would like to find in a vacation home, reaching from a well-equipped kitchen with good cooking utensils and a dish washer to internet connection and a washer/dryer.

What makes this property unique

Staying at the Casa Parrucchiere will allow you to experience real village life and live like a local.
