Guest Access:
Guests have full access to the entire house and the surrounding property during their stay. When you arrive, you’ll find ample space to park several cars right on site (no need to worry about parking fees or street parking here!). The home and its two-acre yard are exclusively yours to use and explore. Feel free to stroll around the property, have a picnic in the grass, or simply relax on the porch taking in the view.
The only area not accessible to guests is the neighbor’s fenced pasture directly in front of the house (where the horses and donkey graze). While you’re welcome to interact with the animals over the fence (using the approved treats we provide), we ask that you do not enter the fenced area, as it belongs to our neighbor. Aside from that, make yourself at home across the entire Hillside Hideaway property.
Entry is self-service: we offer self check-in with a smart lock, so you can arrive at your convenience (we’ll send you the door code and instructions before check-in). Enjoy the freedom of an uninterrupted stay – from the porch to the fire pit to every room in the house, it’s all yours!
The Neighborhood:
🛶 The Buffalo National River flows through the scenic Ozark Mountains near the property, offering spectacular bluffs and clear waters for canoeing and fishing. Here you’ll be immersed in a tranquil, rural atmosphere with breathtaking vistas at every turn. America’s first national river, it flows freely for 135 miles through protected wilderness. Visitors can rent canoes or kayaks in nearby Ponca and spend a day paddling the crystal-clear waters surrounded by towering bluffs and lush forests.
🌊 Hemmed-In Hollow Falls is a spectacular 209-foot waterfall – the tallest between the Rockies and Appalachians – and the trail to reach it starts just minutes from the cabin!
🏞️ Outdoor enthusiasts will love the proximity to numerous hiking trails and scenic wonders. For instance, the Centerpoint Trailhead (about a 5-minute drive away) leads you on a hike to Big Bluff and the Goat Trail, which reward hikers with a jaw-dropping overlook of the Buffalo River winding below. Another favorite, the Lost Valley Trail, is roughly a 15-minute drive from your door – this easy, family-friendly hike features Eden Falls, caves, and beautiful rock formations.
Whether you’re into floating, fishing, hiking, or photography, there’s no shortage of activities in our Ozark Mountain backyard.
Getting Around:
Driving is the best (and really, the only) way to get around here. We strongly recommend guests have a car, as there is no public transportation and attractions are spread out across the rural area. The good news is that the drives are incredibly scenic – you’ll enjoy winding mountain roads with breathtaking views. The cabin is easy to reach via paved roads until the last short stretch (the house sits off a well-maintained gravel county road). Parking is plentiful once you arrive (room for multiple cars in the driveway). To help plan your adventures, here are some estimated drive times from Hillside Hideaway to popular nearby destinations:
- Buffalo National River (Ponca access) – ~10 minutes drive
- Hemmed-In Hollow Falls Trailhead (Compton) – ~5 minutes drive (very close by)
- Lost Valley Hiking Trail – ~15 minutes drive
- Centerpoint Trailhead (Big Bluff overlook) – ~5–10 minutes drive
- Boxley Valley (Elk viewing area) – ~15 minutes drive
- Harrison, AR (nearest town for groceries, gas, restaurants) – ~20 minutes drive
- Branson, MO (major entertainment destination) – ~1 hour drive
(Note: “Buffalo National River (Ponca access)” refers to the Ponca low-water bridge area, a popular launch point for float trips and hikes. Also, the roads in this region are curvy – drive carefully, and watch for wildlife crossing the road, especially at night.)
A vehicle will also allow you to explore scenic drives like Highway 7, which leads to picturesque overlooks such as the “Arkansas Grand Canyon” viewpoint south of Jasper (about 45–50 minutes away)
In short, you’ll have the freedom to roam the Ozarks at your own pace – and we provide detailed directions and parking info for our property and all the popular spots nearby in our digital guidebook for guests. Enjoy the journey as much as the destination!
Other Things to Note:
- House Rules: Please no parties or events. This is a peaceful retreat and we ask all guests to observe quiet hours from 9:00 PM to 8:00 AM to respect the serenity of the area and our neighbors. Outdoor music or loud noise should be kept to a minimum, especially at night.
- Pet Policy: We welcome up to 2 house-trained dogs (any size) with prior approval and a paid pet fee. If you’re bringing a furry friend, let us know in advance. Dogs must be well-behaved and ideally crated if left alone in the house. Please no cats. And remember, the yard is not fully fenced, so for your pet’s safety please keep an eye on them while outdoors. You may occasionally see the neighbors’ small friendly dogs wander over – they are very sweet, but do supervise your pets’ interactions.
- Wildlife & Outdoor Safety: You’re in the country, which means you might encounter critters like insects, rodents, or other wildlife. We do regular pest control, but keeping food sealed and doors closed will help. When hiking or exploring, be mindful of your surroundings (stay on marked trails and watch for any wildlife). In summer, it’s a good idea to bring bug spray for mosquitoes and tick protection if you’ll be in the woods or tall grass.
- Feeding the Neighbor’s Animals: A unique perk here is the chance to feed treats to the neighbor’s horses and donkey. We’ll provide a container of appropriate snacks for them – please only feed them these provided treats and do not offer any human food or other items, as their diet is monitored for their health. Feel free to approach the fence and give the horses a pat or the donkey a scratch – they are gentle and used to visitors (especially ones with treats!). Just be cautious and supervise children during these interactions. Please do not attempt to enter into the fenced-in area or to ride them. As with all animals, interact with them at your own risk.
- Accessibility: The home is accessed via a short gravel drive and has several steps onto the porch. Inside, the main level has bedrooms and a bathroom, but the loft, third bedroom, and the second bathroom are upstairs (accessible by a staircase). If anyone in your group has mobility issues, please note there is no elevator to the loft.
Be prepared for the beauty of nature – on clear nights, the stars are amazing due to minimal light pollution, so you might want to bring your stargazing app or just enjoy identifying constellations by the fire. Plus, watching the sunset over the Ozark Mountains from the expansive front porch will be the highlight of your trip. We’re excited to host you and hope you love this Ozark mountain hideaway as much as we do. Enjoy your stay at Hillside Hideaway!
Interaction with Guests:
We want you to have a relaxing, private getaway, so our interaction with guests is as much or as little as you prefer. Check-in is self-service – we’ll provide you with a smart lock code before arrival, so you can let yourself in anytime after the designated check-in time. While we won’t be on site, we are always just a message or phone call away. Our team is available 24/7 to answer questions or assist with anything you need during your stay. The fastest way to reach us is via the booking app, but you’ll also have an emergency contact number just in case.
We pride ourselves on responsive communication – whether you have a question about how to use an appliance, need local restaurant recommendations, or encounter a maintenance issue, simply reach out and we’ll respond promptly. We respect your privacy and won’t intrude on your vacation, but rest assured that help is readily available whenever required.
Our goal is to make sure you feel taken care of from check-in to check-out, so you can focus on enjoying your time at Hillside Hideaway.
