You won't find Tranquility Bay on a map of Newfoundland, so its best you not dedicate too much time to that effort at the moment. We'll get to that in a moment....
Described by a local business man as "the nicest piece of property in Trinity Bay", our "cottage" at Tranquility Bay, is just one hour from St. John's. Nestled on a quiet corner overlooking Trinity Bay, this property features complete privacy, a private beach, a Hydropool Self-Cleaning Hot Tub and a newly renovated property all throughout.
Understanding that the location of this property simply can not be beat, the actual home consists of an original cottage built circa 1974, and an extension built circa 2000. The original cottage was renovated in 2016 with a nautical theme and a Cape Cod beach house in mind.
This cottage is not perfect and we should manage expectations. We brought in extensive "new" (New everything except for some old hardwood flooring to maintain a hint of the old. "New" meaning we took the entire roof structure out and went back to the beginning - wiring, heating, air conditioning, kitchen, bathroom, fireplace and furniture. All is "new" as of 2016. The original cottage is what we had envisioned it to be and it is beautiful. Yet still, we kept some of the old and there are some "quirky" aspects to the property which we like - it is a part of the character.
Because of this and as you will note, our reviews are great. However, some do not appreciate the "character" - and we have had approximately 1 review a year which tends to be uncomfortable to us. If you are looking for a newly built home / cottage that you would see in the city, this property is not for you. It is a cottage - not a high end home. We simply would like to be upfront that this is our family cottage, and the original intent was never to use it as an investment in the so-called "Gig Economy". While we have opted to make this available in the summer months, we are not suggesting that this is a brand new, perfect home. As such, "quirky things" remain. The basement is out-of-bounds and is unfinished, as are the garages. We have a book that we ask all visitors to read which clarifies everything from Wifi to the cliffs around the property. Overall our rating is strong for most people.
Outside, the property is situated on 2 acres with plenty of grass and green space to play bocce ball, throw a football or baseball or to simply walk around. Access to the beach is to be at your own risk - we do not own the beach and thus we do not maintain access to it. It is a natural path - we maintain nothing there .
In places the rocky cliffs are quite steep and care should be taken when sitting and enjoying the view. To the left while facing the ocean there is a short scramble to "Treasure beach" (as named by our 7-year old son) which is nestled beneath much higher cliffs. Directly in front is a private beach where we spend most of our time with our children.
Getting back to the location, "Tranquility Bay is found on the edge of the little hamlet of Dildo, NL. That is about as gentle as we can say it with a name that garners reactions from a blush and giggle to down right offending people. This town is a great place to take a stroll, meet the local artisans, fisherman and gift store folk. Visitors to the cottage from May to October find themselves watching seals, whales, tuna, eagles and at one point hundreds and hundreds of butterflies! Overall, the scenery is exceptional, the pace is perfect and the convenience of being just one hour from the airport makes it truly a complete escape close to home.
