A Vacation turned into a Bat-cation
This stay ended in a truly disturbing and stressful way. On our last night at the property, we noticed multiple live bats flying inside the home, including in bedrooms, the kitchen, and dining room areas. We also discovered bat droppings (guano) on the walls and near the kitchen. This wasn’t just unsettling, it raised serious health and safety concerns, especially with our young children in the home and the real risk of rabies exposure. When we called the host’s emergency line, the person who answered was dismissive and skeptical, and didn’t seem to take our concerns seriously. Instead of offering help or guidance, he asked us to take pictures and videos as evidence, all while our children were terrified and we were trying to find a way to keep everyone safe. We didn’t feel supported in what was clearly a health hazard and an emergency. A day later, we received a message from someone named Becky, who apologized but said that “animal encounters may happen in the forest.” While we understand that wildlife can be present in outdoor areas, this was completely unacceptable inside a residential living space. The only wildlife related warning we were given before arrival was about bears, with instructions not to leave trash outside or in our vehicle. There was no mention whatsoever of bats inside the home or any prior infestations. VRBO’s customer service was also extremely difficult to reach. Until the home is professionally and and thoroughly cleaned, I strongly advise STAY AWAY
