Wonderful quite country home and some.
We stayed at the house over the July 4th week and had a wonderful time. We were looking to get away from it all and this house came through in full. The house is large and nicely appointed. We were two families and the house was large enough to give us all our own spaces and plenty of common space to share. We found arrangements to be very comfortable for 6 people. It was well fitted we had everything we needed during our stay. For the few minor issues (needed the hose turned on) the caretaker was quick and very helpful. The kitchen had all the basics we needed to cook and bake(we did bring our own cake pans) a mix of foods. We loved the old fashioned charm of the house with it's antiques and hidden doorway. Sleeping arrangements woorked well for us but one bedroom is attached to another(the two upstairs twin bedrooms) in a way you need to pass though one to reach the bathroom. On a whole were very happy with the bed and bathroom arrangements. Beyond the house the property was amazing. The back yard is huge and beautifully kept. There was more room then our kids even knew what to do with. The tennis court and pond up and across the road were also really nice. Maybe a five or ten min walk from the house. The location is great. You feel as though your in the middle of nowhere even though you are a very short drive from the center of town. There was a large supermarket 20 min away which was a bit far but you could get basics things in town. There were also big box stores 30 min way in Bennington. We attended some events at Saratoga(45 min) and in Bennington(30min) and the drive to those locations were nice but a bit far. One of the few downsides were these drives though beautiful during the day they were a lot of sharp turns that made them a bit rough late at night. That being said it was a short drive to much of what makes the Green mountains so great. The house and property was great for us for our stay. We would be happy to stay here again if returning to the area.
Wonderful and comfortable antique country home!
This charming, 200 year old, house in the country is remarkable for its unspoiled beauty as well as for its comfort. It is very clean and all of the fixtures and appliances function in a modern way (although I didn’t see a microwave), but the ambience of this house is as if you’ve truly stepped back in time. To me, this effect is tremendously appealing and relaxing and I would love to stay here again! The location is also great for “getting away from it all”, because all of the nearby towns are quite small and not overly commercial. The surrounding country roads and gorgeous, pastoral scenery make for a bicyclist’s paradise and probably a walker’s heaven, too. Great for scenic drives, as well, and for a more commercial “fix”, Manchester, Vermont, isn’t very far away. (Bennington, VT and Saratoga Springs, NY. are also less than an hour away.)
Located just outside the charming and historic village of Cambridge, NY. 20 miles to Saratoga Springs, NY or Manchester, VT.
About Katherine Roome
My husband and I live nearby and try to meet guests when they arrive to familiarize them with the house.
Why Katherine Roome chose Cambridge
This is a beautiful 200 year old classic brick Federal house furnished with 19th Century country antiques. We have a good sized farm kitchen stocked with essentials (except no microwave). We stock staples such as coffee, tea, and spices. On the first floor there is a large living room with a working fireplace, a formal dining room with a table that seats 10 comfortably, a library, and a bedroom (with king sized bed and full bathroom). In addition to “every day” dishes, we also have vintage dishes and glassware for a more formal dinner. There is a washer and dryer on the first floor. Upstairs, there are three more bedrooms (one with a queen sized bed and two with two twin beds each) as well as two full bathrooms. There is also a “secret” attic annex with a fifth bedroom (double bed) appropriate for children or less fussy adults. In the basement, there’s a good children’s library, some toys and a small billiard table. There is plenty of parking in front of the house, with a convenient circular driveway. There’s a charcoal barbeque on the back patio. While we do have wireless internet, our remote location does not support streaming. The digital antennae brings in local tv network channels only. Local Services and Attractions Washington County is a wonderful rural community all year round. To the east are the Vermont Green Mountains and to the West are the Adirondack Mountains. You can’t go very far without seeing cows, horses, bee hives, apple orchards and miles of corn & hay fields. There’s a Shurfine food market and a small organic grocery less than 5 minutes away in the village of Cambridge. On weekends, Cambridge hosts a fabulous farmer’s market with live music. Cambridge also has a very good book store and several good antique shops, a great local brewery (with live music in the summer) and a few pretty basic restaurants for pizza, Chinese or Italian food. There are fancier restaurants 30 minutes away in Saratoga Springs or Bennington, VT.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
The house is full of original features, including doors, beautiful moldings and what is purported to have been a hiding place for slaves traveling on the Underground Railroad. We are located on 100 acres of agricultural land including gardens, a tree nursery, and some woods. Across the road and up a grass path, there is a very private swimming pond, a clay tennis court in excellent condition, and a small cabin. There is also a canoe and plenty of trees to climb. The house is not child proofed and there are a lot of stairs so it may not be appropriate for very young children. We will allow small, well trained pets on a case by case basis. No smoking in the house please. There is no place prettier than Washington County in spring. You can fly fish, kayak, and canoe on the famous Battenkill River. In the summer, there are bikes nearby to rent and ride on miles of quiet country roads (Cambridge also hosts the very popular “Tour of the Battenkill” cycling race). There is the Cambridge Valley hot air balloon festival in June, ballet/orchestra/rock concerts at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center all summer, and lots of shopping in Saratoga and Manchester. And of course, the Saratoga Thoroughbred Race Track is open late July through Labor Day. There are also some wonderful performances and classes (music, theatre, dance, yoga, etc.) in Cambridge Village at the historic Hubbard Hall. In the fall, in addition to world class leaf peeping, there is the Washington County Cheese Tour, the Fiber Tour (farm stops and workshops) and a major art show to benefit local land conservation. There are miles of hiking all around. Come winter, Bromley is 45 minutes away and Stratton is about an hour. We have cross country skiing and snowshoeing “right out the back door”.
