We are long time residents of the Hesperus area. We raised our children down the road and Grandpa Demarest lived on this property since 1971. He was an avid outdoorsman, but also active in promoting tourism. He was a motel owner, movie location scout for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and others, guide for Louis L'Amour, and promoter of the Navajo Trail highway. Our children love this property and asked us to save it for their children after Grampa passed. Hence, Camp Demarest came into being.
Pat purchased this House in 1971
Why Pat chose Hesperus
A great place for our “city-bred” grandchildren to run and explore and parents to relax.
What makes this House unique
Ideally located for day trips to Mesa Verde, Hovenweep, Chimney Rock, Canyon of the Ancients, Skyway Loop, Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge train and more. Beautiful LaPlata Canyon is 6 miles north. Great places to hike, explore 4wd roads, fly fish gold medal Animas River, bike single track at Phil's World. Travel easily to Telluride, Purgatory and Hesperus to ski or stay closer to home to cross country ski or show shoe. Good base for hunting. Enjoy the western dinner show, Bar-D-Wranglers, or mini golf and Texas Tacos at Serious Texas Bar-Be-Que. Tour wineries or the many craft breweries. Durango offers a unique downtown with boutique shopping and excellent restaurants. Mancos is nearby to the west with a brewery, cidery, and art district. The Southwest has something for everyone. We love this area and think you will too. We are happy to share information that may make your trip more enjoyable.

Wonderful home with great hospitality
We enjoyed our stay! The home was very clean and had a lot of personal touches! Everything we needed was supplied including towels, shampoo, laundry detergent, and everything we needed in the kitchen. They even provided a keurig with K-cups! The home had a nice layout with 3 bedrooms and a central living area where we spent most of our time. The kitchen had a large table and the TV was amazing with Roku so we could watch the football games and Christmas movies! The owners even had a Christmas Tree set up for us to enjoy! The owners responded quickly if we had questions. The property was gorgeous and we enjoyed exploring the outdoors! I would highly recommend this for any family!
Thank you for your wonderful comments. Look forward to your next stay. Pat
We came to the area with the grandparents and our 2 littles to go on the polar express train ride and this worked great for us. When we arrived the lights were on along with the heat and to our surprise a beautiful Christmas tree which the kids loved. The home had pretty much everything we needed and it was great that there were games and a beautiful snowy yard to sled on!
So glad you enjoyed your stay. Our kids sled that little hill also!
Excellent for a family with kids.
Clean, comfortable, and cute house. Nice location in between Durango and Mesa Verde. Our kids loved the scavenger hunt and painted rocks they got to keep as a prize. It was nice to have the open space to let them run around. Some minor quibbles are due to the home’s age and probably unfixable (squeaking floors and soft water pressure in the shower) but overall a great place and would stay again.
Great place to stay
We used this house for our Elk Hunting trip. Had 5 guys and plenty of room and good kitchen facilities.
Cozy and Quiet
This was a great place to stay. It was nice and quiet with wonderful sounds of nature. The owners are very friendly and helpful. We loved our stay.
We enjoyed the house and property. Outdoor space is wonderful and the house was perfect for our trip. The owners are very nice and always available if needed.
Hesperus is nestled at the mouth of LaPlata Canyon as a perfect location to maximize all the southwest has to offer. Close to Durango (8 mi) and great dining and unique downtown shopping.
Ride the famous Durango Silverton train or raft, hike, walk, ski, rock climb, Jeep tours, cycling, and more. Mesa Verde is a close drive and Four Corners Monument is a bit further. You can drive the Million Dollar Highway loop, riding the gondola and eating lunch in Telluride, swimming in Ouray Hot Springs, then returning.
Several games, cornhole, badminton, horseshoes are provided for your entertainment. Also enjoy panning for gold or throw in a fishing line with the poles provided.
