About this property

Old Pyrenean farmhouse in beautiful Sainte-Engrâce. Max 6 adults + one child

Located in Sainte-Engrâce, this enchanting farmhouse is a dream. Akhozia is an old Souletine farmhouse sitting in the middle of its land at the end of its own drive, looking out over the valley to the south and west, with a rugged peak and wooded crest behind. The house dates from at least the 16th century and has kept its beams, fireplace and old staircase. It boasts a good library with a good mix of light and serious reading and an enamelled log burning stove that can heat the whole house. The house sleeps a maximum of 6 adults and a child. The garden is large. You can sit out in the open or under the apple tree, or to sunbathe. There are culinary herbs. There is also a morning sun area with picnic table beside the kitchen door.

NB: 2026 Aug 12 a total eclipse will pass across northern Spain, Full totality visible from San Sebastián, Pamplona, Logrono and Zaragoza, all within 2 - 4 hrs from the house.

July 2026 Tour de France. The Pyrenean section is easily accessible from the house and every few years passes through the village.

Akhozia is ideally located for hiking, as beautiful walks can be taken directly from the house without using the car at all. The GR10 passes through the village, and we provide information about many other local hikes (Pic d'Orhy, Pic des Escaliers etc). Fantastically fun for children: aside from playing in the stream, or making huts or treehouses in the woods. There is the opportunity for quiet contemplation by the stream or among the trees. There is also a wonderful swimming hole 5k away (in the Saison river, with rock to dive from into icy clear water, otters, trout). The beach is 1½ - 2 hours away (Basque coast), La Pierre St Martin ski station is 12km away, handy village shop and bar is at the bottom of the hill, within easy walking distance and from which bread can be ordered. Good and friendly restaurant in the village (5km). More serious dining can be found a few kilometres away in Larrau and Tardets. Clean mountain air, peace and quiet, the tinkle of sheep bells. Dogs are permitted up to two, but no tents can be set up or additional people added beyond the maximum. A caretaker lives in an apartment in the detached barn and takes care of the fields and woods and can offer detailed information about the area.

Beautiful part of the world

We had a wonderful week with our children and explored a lot. There was great hiking and a beautiful swimming hole close by, and the local towns were fun to visit.

Beautiful house in remote part of France

This is a great place to stay with a lovely garden, plenty of space and lots of nice walks on the doorstep. Ste Engrace feels like stepping back in time . The house has everything you need and more (table tennis, bbq, bath etc.) though nothing is new and no 1 item the same which adds to the charm. We enjoyed a stay here with 2 very young children and found it perfect for them

A so lovely place, A so lovely stay

What a wonderful stay, at Andrew's and his wife house, shared with a warm welcome, and all the necessary equipment despite a very ancient house in remote area ... then with all the magic of calm, view on pyrenean mountains, farms around, sunset, ... and so many activities, walk arounds, for those who do not fear a bit of sport (but we did magic walks with a 4 years child ... Holzarte bridge, etc.) ... in summary, a magic place and lovely hosts

Stunningly located, rustic Basque farmhouse

Amazing isolated farmhouse in high mountains with lovely garden and outdoor eating space amongst fascinating nature and incredible views. Secure and dog friendly. The on-site owner was very helpful and a great source of interesting information about the Pyrenees and much else. This is a traditional unmodernised farmhouse, well equipped kitchen, things worked. For an 8 person house the bathroom capacity is barely sufficient.

7 days Akhozia july 2023

The house is situated on a beatiful and peaceful location full of nature. Beautiful garden with views on the surrounding landscape, vultures and other birds surfing the sky. We had few sunshine and mostly cloudy days, but the location and the climate made an excellent stay. Kids had enough to play with in the garden and also had a good time. Its a rural house, so not expect a modern living, but it has everything you need during an active holiday

Meet the nature close to you

Welcome to a place where the nature is mysterious and beautiful. The house is inviting you in. The garden is nice.... And just try to sit in the garden and look at the mountains... You find yourself in another world. Andrew, the owner, is very kindly and helpful.. Thanks to all that we had a splendid holiday far from Denmark.

Quiet Pyrenean Farmhouse

We had a great holiday for two weeks in Accocce which was just as we’d hoped - a roomy and characterful farm on a hillside with fantastic views in every direction. It’s a bit of a drive to reach nearby villages but perfect for a quiet retreat. Andrew was a great host - we arrived much later than planned and Andrew was able to accommodate us. He was very friendly without being intrusive and we had some very interesting chats about his life in France. We came with our baby daughter and the house was ideal for her (quiet, cool, spacious).

Beautiful mountain haven for families

We (me, my wife and 2 children, 9 and 11) chose to return to the same holiday house for the first time ever this year after a week at Accoce in August last year, and we weren't disappointed. This is a stunningly situated, very informal old mountain farmhouse where there is a choice of relaxing with a book while watching the valley, or, as we did, exploring the many outdoor activities available nearby, ranging from beautiful walks along gorges, by rivers, up hills, or even into caves. Whether out and about or staying at the house, the children in particular had a brilliant time. I'd recomend Accoce without hesitation to anyone looking for beauty and solitude, and/or who enjoys actively exploring countryside or looking for wildlife. Andrew, the owner, is unfailingly helpful, but also extremely unobtrusive when around.

Great time at Accoce

We stayed there only one week but the time was fantastic, very beatiful land views of the valley around the house, very cute rural decoration with a a lot of details... To have breakfast in front of the big window looking at the horses and donkeys was very relaxing and very nice. To see the sunset sitting in front of the valley incredible! The house is very confortable, games for children, sports, barbacue, big garden.... Andrew was very friendly and gave us a lot of information about what to do in the surroundings. They have a lovely dog Mackie, it was very friendly and our kids loved it very much. In summary, Accoce is a perfect place because you have a wide offer of activities (culture, nature, rivers, speleology (caves), rural markets, cheese farm activities ...) in a short distance and you have silence and wild nature and confort at Andrew's house Thanks Andrew it was a pleasure to stay at Accoce

A wonderful base to explore the Pyrennees

Despite unpromising weather, we had a splendid week in this Pyrennean home from home. It is an excellent base to explore the western Pyrennees, on both the French and Spanish sides. We escaped the clouds on the French side, and were rewarded with sunshine in Spain. The house was exactly as it appears in the pictures, a delightful home which would have easily have accommodated 6. The garden is idyllic... We just wished we had had the weather to fully make use of it. We felt fully independent, although the owner is close by, and available if any questions arise. Our car battery failed whilst there, and we were given excellent advice about where to go to get it fixed promptly. We had everything that we needed, including supplies of wood to feed the wood burner, which was very welcome on some rather chilly evenings, making the sitting room delightfully cosy after a day out walking. There is an abundance of places to visit and explore, and some very good local eateries. Walking around Lescun is spectacular, but there are wonderful places to explore in every direction. If you plan to self-cater, stock up well with supplies as you arrive, as it some distance from the nearest supermarket, but Chez Felix nearby has most things to top up supplies. All in all, a delightful Pyrenean retreat. We fully intend to return with friends in the not so distant future.

Really beautiful location

We had a most peaceful six night stay in this lovely old farm house. The location is idyllic with marvellous views all around - no need to go anywhere if you just feel like lazing about and soaking it all in. Shop en route. The local shop has basics and is fun, but don't be in a rush as Felix and his mother enjoy chatting! The great weather helped make our stay, but Andrew's unobtrusive presence on site and extensive local knowledge (especially pre-arrival directions / shopping advice and walks / places of interest info) helped us get the most out of our stay, along with Mackie, the border collie, who accompanied us on our local strolls and led us back when we asked. Great to have a bounce on the unexpected trampoline in such a special setting, or just to lie on it and watch the birds / stars. The walkiing in this area is absoluteyl fabulous. We rattled about a bit in such a large space as there were only two of us, but the place can accommodate eight close family or friends very comfortably as long as you don't mind the layout: no one bedroom is entirely private as from two of them you have to pass through another to get to communal spaces. One bathroom, two separate loos. I only mention these points for those planning on visiting as a group who may find this layout problematic. (I understand that Andrew jhas plans to modify the house to get round this in parts). The house is lovely and very authentic, with the added bonus of an extensive and eclectic library, and has eveything you need for a comfortable stay . We felt it was very good value for money, particularly for a group. We hope to return in the future. Kate and Steve, Cambridge (no, we don't know the Semples).

A blissful Pyrenean retreat

This is a really magical place nestled in a Pyrenean valley less than 2 hours away from Biarritz or Pau. The house is full of character and charm with a roaring fire and many cosy bedrooms to choose from. An atmosphere inside that makes you feel instantly at home and gardens and land to explore outside that will keep you in walks for days . A spectrum of beautiful environmnents all on the estate - from shady woodland streams to wild meadows. The spectacular view of the mountains so close by from the kitchen window will stay with me for ever I am sure . The owner Andrew stays discretely in a barn across the garden. He is there to advise on local knowledge and walks should you feel inclined. We so enjoyed his company that we ended up socialising on several nights. But equally Andrew will keep himself totally separate from you and he is very respectful of your privacy as he goes about his farm chores. The main house for guests is completely secluded with its own garden not overlooked - and a wonderful venue for breakfasts or supper al fresco watching the sun go down. The downstairs bedroom has doors leading out to the garden which in turn face a dramatic mountain scenery. It makes getting up a joy. It was just myself and partner in this lovely old house but we will come back with our wider family and friends without doubt. In fact we were looking to buy a small home in the area but on discovering this wonderful house and spot have decided to just come back here instead. Would suit a family with young ish active children as there is so much of the natural world to discover here and the most perfect of playgrounds. There is even a trampoline in the middle of an adjacent field which went down very well with us even in our fifties, coupled with the daily evening table tennis. Aside from the comfort of the house, the breathtaking views you will also be overwhelmed with the warmth of Felix and his sister Marcel in the local general store which can feed you for several days if you cant be bothered to head for the supermarkets a few miles away. We were here in September (late) and enjoyed very warm fine days with just one day of rain. I am already scheming a return visit to this place that so feels like home.
