A decent location on the west coast of Oahu

We stayed here for 9 nights. It is rural in an Oahu-sense, but urban enough to be close to stores within 2-15 minutes drive. The beaches over there are much less busy, but just as sandy and sunny as anywhere else on the island. Around Waianae and Makaha, there is a more local, genuine feel, less touristy, which made Robin and Aki's location nice to come home to after a day of driving around Oahu. We had a small propane barbeque to use and the one-burner induction cooker and electric panini grill was sufficient for making most of our evening meals. Plenty of hot water in the shower, and the washing machine worked as washing machines do (no dryer). Very little noise from upstairs where Robin and Aki live, and very respectful of our privacy as we hope we were of theirs. The AC unit helped keep the temps down at night and create white-noise to counteract some of the country-noises you encounter in rural settings. As described, their pets are friendly and well behaved. They have gear to borrow for body boarding and surfing, but you may want to pick up a rental vehicle with a roof rack or buy an inexpensive $50 nylon strap rack from any of the Oahu Wal-Marts to carry up to 2 boards. (take the rack home with you if you want). It is about an hour drive from Honolulu when you avoid the traffic and, say an hour and a quarter to Waimea Bay. Plan your day to avoid the traffic and you get to stay at an affordable location, close to the beaches, close to Kaena Point, and you get to see the sun set on the ocean every day. Good luck to Robin and Aki in your future endeavours!

About the host

Aloha! We are Robin and Aki: husband and wife who live, work, and play in beautiful Makaha. We are usually in the water diving or surfing, hiking amazing waterfalls/mountains of Oahu (Robin), designing beautiful shell jewelry (Aki), or working on our small tropical fruit farm, Aloha Fruits. Originally from Washington state, Robin continues his more than 20 years of serving the Waianae/Makaha community as a public school teacher; Aki was born and raised in Osaka, Japan. Her Esty store Aloha_Beachy_Style boasts hundreds of 5-star reviews from happy customers. Happy traveling!

Why they chose this property

Ohana:
Makaha has been home since 2004 when Robin began working as an elementary teacher at Kamaile Academy in Waianae (now in his 20th year!). Shortly after, we married on nearby Keawa'ula Beach and bought our first condo in Makaha Valley. We purchased our current property in 2008, with dreams of growing a small, tropical fruit farm and returning Makaha Valley to its agricultural heyday.
Kai:
The ocean has always been the reason we're drawn to Makaha. The crystal clear waters, protected from the prevailing easterly tradewinds by the Waianae mountain range, are a playground for all water sports and adventures. Every evening produces a highlight-reel sunset into the ocean that is best enjoyed on some of the best beaches in Hawaii.

What makes this property unique

Imagine.. strolling back home from the beach along the country road after a quick morning swim in the clear warm water of the Pacific. Rinse the sand off in your outdoor shower, and pick a few ripe mangoes for your smoothie off the trees in the yard - just steps from the front door of your private suite! Sip your fresh fruit smoothie, relax in your comfortable reading chair, and drift into a nap as the cool AC helps you escape the afternoon heat. Awaken in time to meet your friends at the beach down the block for another epic sunset. Then set the chairs around the fire pit in the backyard and gaze into the deep black of the universe. The night sky in Makaha is significantly darker because there are no street lights to emit constant light pollution and block the view. This is country-living, Makaha style

Although it's on a farm in the country, the Mango Suite boasts all the essential upgrades of modern living including AC, high-speed WIFI, a keypad lock, and a front door camera (outside). Inside, fresh paint and multiple windows add light to the cozy space, which has been thoughtfully furnished with unique pieces that are functional and stylish. The living space holds a queen bed, a full closet, a 4-drawer dresser, a comfortable reading chair, and a smart TV. The small kitchenette is surprisingly efficient and capable of cooking full meals with an induction cooktop, countertop convection oven, rice cooker, and microwave (additional appliances not listed). A new full-size LG refrigerator has ample space to keep all your veggies fresh when you come home from the local farmer's market.

Mango Suite is a unique Oahu lodging experience because the studio is nestled on a working tropical fruit farm. During your stay, you will have the chance to experience and learn about tropical fruits and plants on a closer level and even participate in day-to-day farm activities if you want. *no work required*
