About this property

A lovely and safe base for unhurried travellers and digital nomads

Our guest bungalow is located within our farm, in a scenic location above Pavones, near Turrialba. It offers a panoramic view of the two volcanos Irazú and Turrialba, the Turrialba valley below and on the other side all the way down to the Caribbean Coast.

Around the buildings, there are well kept gardens with lots of flowers and ornamental plants, notably a collection of beautiful orchids.

In the farm we grow coffee and process it using traditional methods. We also produce fruit (citrus, papaya, four kinds of banana, some pineapple, plus local fruit) and various types of vegetables and salads. Fruit and vegetable are grown organically. Last not least, we keep about 50 free range hens. We are happy about guests who want to learn more about these activities or even want to give it a try themselves.

Gente con Tiempo, as we call our place, means People with Time. It is a place to relax and enjoy, with no fixed schedule and no rush to move on to the next destination. Our guests are typically couples close to retirement age, but younger persons and especially families with kids are also very welcome.

The house comes with a fully equipped kitchen. We provide house cleaning service (but not dish washing) and laundry service (washing and drying, but not ironing).

There is a fast and stable internet connection, ideal for professionals intending to do serious work via internet. Work spaces are available in the living room and on the terrace. A large work desk can be set up on request.

The location of our place is ideal base for all sorts of excursions, such as tours on foot or horseback and, for the more adventurous, rafting on the Pacuare river. The region is especially suitable for tours by mountain bike, as there is an excellent network of rural roads. The best beaches on the Caribbean Coast are a short 2.5 hours’ drive away.

The town of Turrialba is 20 minutes away, by own transportation or by public bus. Transfers from and to San José airport can be arranged.

The distance from the main road Turrialba-Siquirres is 1km. The place can be reached with any type of car. Guests can drive right up to the car port. The house is wheelchair accessible.

Your hosts are a Swiss/Ecuadorian couple. We speak Spanish, English, German and French.

Our guests often stay for weeks or even months. They use our place as base from which to explore the region and also to visit other parts of the country. We are happy to assist with suggestions and advice for trip planning.

Great base for birding adventures around Turrialba region
This was a lovely and comfortable house and we really enjoyed the farm and the fresh eggs. It was a great base for birding in the Turrialba region. Easy day trip access to Rancho Naturalista, Finca Tres Equis, Volcan Turrialba, Torrealta and Bonilla. Pavones resident Stephen Montenegro is an excellent bird guide. Super spot for birders!

Serene and Comfortable
We stayed on this charming little finca for 2.5 months. I was accompanied by my husband and two children (6 and 3). A couple surprises for us were; an unbelievable amount of rain, rain boots are a necessity, and the humming of insects was intense. The house is located at the end of a very large and steep hill (not uncommon in CR). Therefore, anytime you walk outside be prepared to feel the burn :) The inside of the house is beautiful. The kitchen has everything you may need and Cristina and Edwin were very accommodating hosts. The two twin beds are soft and comfortable. The queen size bed is a little firmer. The house stays very cool. The views are stunning and the access to fresh farm eggs was a great bonus. Unfortunately, this property would have been a struggle for us to enjoy without a car. You can walk down the long mountain to the main road to catch a bus but it would be a longer venture and a steep walk, especially with kids. We shared some delicious meals with Cristina and Edwin and movie nights as well. Both were very helpful in sharing useful information about CR and navigating the country. They always encouraged us to call if we needed anything during our weekend excursions and it personally made me feel more comfortable traveling in a foreign country knowing I had their support if necessary. We had a very pleasurable stay :) This property worked well for our kids. They played outside each day and Cristina and Edwin were friendly and welcoming to their larger than life imaginations. We spent a lot of our time on the patio listening to the insects and jungle noises as well as enjoying new foods and playing games. We embraced the finca saying of , "gente con tiempo." Lastly, their homegrown coffee is AMAZING. I am not a huge coffee drinker but after I tasted Edwin and Cristina's coffee I had a small cup almost every day and I enjoyed it black, a first for me. Thank you both again! Hugs from Chelsie, Galen, Aliena and Seidon 🙂

Lovely Retreat
The moment we entered the gate and started up the winding driveway to the top of the hill, I could tell this was going to be something special. Christina and Edwin’s place is so much more than we expected- the pictures do not do this remarkably lovely property justice and the warmth and hospitality of our hosts left us feeling deeply cared for and knowing that we will return again one day. The beautifully designed and spacious casas sit at the top of the hill overlooking the valleys, where we were enchanted by the gorgeous daytime views and could see the mist roll in under us and then enjoy the twinkling lights of the town below at night. The home was sparkling clean and fresh and appointed with beautiful and interesting items that reflect our hosts’ international travels. It was a pleasure to stay in and very comfortable! We took our hosts up on their offer of dinner on several of the evenings of our stay and were so glad we did- do not pass this up- the meals were absolutely delicious and we loved the time we spent with them learning all about life in Costa Rica. We also really appreciated touring around with Edwin and gaining local insight into the area, picking up some excellent brie and camembert- thank you Edwin!- and checking out some spots of specific interest to us such as a paragliding take off point. There were many really special touches that made our stay extra special such as the fresh farm eggs available to purchase, the amazing and delicious artisanal coffee grown on their farm, the solid wifi connection, the availability of doing our laundry- a real luxury in Costa Rica! We really enjoyed our time at Gente con Tiempo and highly recommend it!

About the host

Hosted by Cristina + Edwin

Host profile image
Cristina´s home country is Ecuador where she worked in handicraft design and home decoration. She has lots of talents in cultivation of tropical plants (in particular orchids) and is a fantastic cook. Edwin is an Agricultural Economist, now retired except for occasional consultancies. Together they have traveled a lot and lived in a variety of countries. They enjoy good company and sharing of travel experiences and advice. For guests interested in settling down in Costa Rica they are quite willing to provide useful information.

Why they chose this property

Located at altitude of 1000 meters, temperatures are pleasant all year round (neither air conditioning nor heating required). The landscape is beautiful and unspoiled. From the house there is a panoramic view over mountain areas and the two volcanoes all the way down to the Caribbean coast.

What makes this property unique

The location is close enough to a regional center for easy shopping, but far enough from roads and settlements for undisturbed peace.
The finca provides an ideal base for exploring the region on foot, bicyle (or motorbike), horseback or by car. A special attraction is rafting on the Pacuare river.
From Turrialba, it is easy to reach San José (2 hours) or the beaches of the Caribbean coast (2.5 to 3 hours)
