About this property
Luxury Retreat w/ Hot Tub on Shenandoah River
Escape to Hygge River House, a luxury retreat inspired by `hygge`—the Danish art of comfort. Soak in the hot tub, sip coffee or wine on the porch, and enjoy professionally designed interiors with mountain views. Every detail invites relaxation, warmth, and connection in a peaceful, private setting.
As you enter `Hygge River House,` you`ll be welcomed into the open kitchen and dining area, fully equipped for home-cooked meals and family gatherings. Just beyond, the cozy living room invites you to relax with an all-season electric fireplace, comfortable seating, and warm, inviting design — the perfect place to gather after a day of exploring.
Adjacent to the main living area on the first floor are two bedrooms, each featuring a queen bed and thoughtfully designed touches to create a restful night`s sleep.
**The main floor is accessed with one step on the front deck, so those with limited mobility can enjoy the dining area, kitchen, living room, two bedrooms, and main level bathroom. Remaining areas of the property including some outdoor spaces require the use of additional stairs to access.**
A few steps down from the main level, you’ll find a bright and airy sunroom with large windows and a nod to the home’s history — the property’s original record player, now a decorative feature. This space offers a quiet spot for reading, morning coffee, or enjoying the natural light.
Continue downstairs into the lower-level movie and game room, where floor-to-ceiling windows wrap around two walls, bringing in mountain views year-round. This level features a 65” TV, foosball table, plenty of lounge seating, and three sliding glass doors that open directly onto the deck. Outside on the deck, you`ll find sun loungers and additional space for outdoor relaxation. A convenient half bath is also located on this level.
On the upper floor, you`ll find two additional bedrooms — one with a queen bed and another with two twin beds — along with a full bathroom, offering flexibility for families or groups traveling together.
Step outside to enjoy the property`s many outdoor amenities, including a grill, multiple seating areas, and a private pathway leading to the hot tub and fire pit — perfect for stargazing or enjoying unparalleled mountain and river views. Guests are often treated to the sight of bald eagles soaring overhead or perching in nearby trees. In the front yard, you`ll find equipment for badminton, Cornhole, and Spikeball, providing options for outdoor fun.
A private trail leads down to the river, where a grassy area provides a peaceful place to relax and take in the scenery. Please note: the path to the river is fairly steep and may not be suitable for small children, older guests, or those with mobility concerns.

Why `Hygge River House`?
Hygge (pronounced `hoo-gah`) is a Danish word that captures the feeling of warmth, coziness, and simple pleasures — like a crackling fire, a warm drink, or time spent with loved ones. Hygge River House was designed to reflect that spirit: a peaceful retreat where you can slow down, relax, and enjoy the natural beauty of the Shenandoah Valley.
Guests have access to the entire cabin and outdoor spaces, with the exception of several locked storage closets and the detached garage used for owner and maintenance access.
We’re available via phone and text throughout your stay. We typically take a hands-off approach to respect your privacy, but are always happy to assist with questions or concerns.
The property sits within a small riverside neighborhood of full-time residents, second homes, and short term rentals. We ask guests that they be respectful of neighbors, but the property itself is very private. When arriving at the property, please be cautious of wildlife and children that may share the roads - a speed limit of 10-15 miles is posted for the last mile leading to the property.
As with most destinations in the area, a vehicle is required to get around. River access via `Deer Rapids` Bridge is just a 10-15 minute walk away.
PROPERTY GUIDE
After booking, you`ll receive a detailed property guide highlighting the area`s best wineries, hikes, restaurants, and attractions, as well as important information to help you prepare for your stay.
PETS
While we love furry companions, due to allergies and the setup of the property, pets are not permitted. If would like to take advantage of one of our pet-friendly properties, check-out our Airbnb profile for other options.
FAMILY FRIENDLY AMENITIES
We provide a pack n’ play, highchair, and children`s tableware to accommodate families traveling with young children.
VEHICLE ACCESS & ELECTRIC CHARGING
The property is easily accessible year-round via paved and gravel (last quarter mile) roads, with most vehicles able to reach the home without issue; during winter weather or icy conditions, AWD or 4WD may be recommended or required. The driveway accommodates up to 4 vehicles, and trailers are not permitted without prior approval. A 240V outlet is available at no cost for Level 2 electric vehicle charging; guests must bring their own compatible charger.
GUEST SAFETY & WELLNESS
The home features smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers, and a professional cleaning team that thoroughly cleans and sanitizes all bedding and high-touch surfaces between reservations. The property is surrounded by wildlife—deer, rabbits, foxes, box turtles, groundhogs and the occasional black bear are part of the natural charm. Insects and critters may make appearances from time to time; simply let us know if anything is out of the ordinary. Note - as the property is alongside the Shenandoah River, snapping turtles and snakes may also make the occasional appearance.
UPDATES & PROPERTY MAINTENANCE
We occasionally make improvements to ensure the best guest experience, so furniture or decor may differ slightly from listing photos. During your stay, our landscaping or hot tub maintenance team may visit the exterior of the property as needed.
RIVER ACCESS & WALKWAY
The property includes a private pathway providing access to the riverfront area. Please note that the path is natural terrain and includes a fairly steep incline/decline. It may not be suitable for all guests, including those with mobility limitations, small children, or individuals who are unsteady on uneven surfaces. Use of the river pathway is entirely at your own risk, and guests should exercise caution, particularly in wet or icy conditions. Proper footwear is strongly recommended. The property owner assumes no responsibility for injuries or accidents resulting from use of the path or river access.
Swimming, water sports, kayaking, etc. are not advised from the property itself. A boat landing is approximately a 3 minute drive or 15 minute walk from the property and can serve as a launch point for river access. Access using kayaks, canoes, and other personal equipment is permitted, but the spot is not appropriate for boat launches.
HOT TUB & AMENITY USAGE
Hot tub and other amenity usage is at your own risk. Our property cleaning and maintenance team takes great care to ensure these are available year round and are cleaned, tested, and maintained regularly by us personally or trained staff.
`DEER RAPIDS BRIDGE` is a 10-15 minute (or 2-3 minute drive) walk from the property. There is a small access point to launch kayaks and other personal craft and we ask that guests be especially mindful or the community if visiting - please do not leave any trash or other debris.
