About this property

Beautiful 2/2 Islamorada Home Directly on Florida Bay (28 Day Minimum Rental)

Our home is in Islamorada, in the middle Florida Keys. To be more specific, we are on Lower Matecumbe Key, which is the southernmost island in Islamorada, at exactly Mile Marker 74, on the bayside. Our home is a 2/2, and can comfortably sleep four, with two bedrooms upstairs. The Master has a queen bed, and a private bath. The second bedroom has twin beds, and a separate bath. If more room is needed, or for families with young kids or teenagers, it's possible for at least two to "camp out" on comfortable air mattresses upstairs in the family room. Downstairs there is a laundry room/workshop, and a more "rustic" game room/bar with a refrigerator for water/soft drinks/beer/bait.

A piece of Paradise
This home in Lower Matecumbe is a piece of paradise. A wonderful keys house with a view. The view on Florida Bay is a 10, absolutely RIDICULOUS. Amazing. We saw all types of sunsets against the Florida Everglades. Even storms 20 miles away were beautiful to watch. Down by the water you are in your personal aquarium, over the 4 weeks we must have seen over 25 different species of aquatic life, including a huge Goliath Grouper, eels, parrot fish, porpoises, snappers, grunts….to name a few. Dock area and seawall aquarium, a 10. Bill and Kathy are fabulous hosts. The home is FULLY equipped, you know the saying ‘just bring your toothbrush’, well you don’t have to because brand new packaged toothbrushes and toothpaste are in every bathroom. No trial sizes of soap or shampoos, full size bottles, and plenty of extra paper products. My favorite spot was on the back porch in the early morning, watching birds fishing for breakfast, fish breaking water chasing bait fish. What a wonderful way to start the day, so calming. And how else to end the day but by watching the multitude of colors in the sky once the sunset prior to getting dark. Our 30ft boat fit perfect on the dock and it was a short ride to Channel 5 bridge. We went fishing most days unless the weather did not permit, catching dolphin, tuna, and snapper. You can even watch the boy scouts go out at 930am or 130pm either on a kayak tour, an everglades, tour, snorkling or diving. What a great camp for kids. They are located at the base of channel 2. Amazing, Amazing place.

Frosting on the cake!
Oh boy oh boy did we love this property! Everything you could want was there. Good kitchen accessories, comfy chairs, screened porch with incredible sunset views. Beach bikes and kayaks were the frosting on the cake. Quiet street, friendly neighborhood. Especially loved all the boats cruising right by the dock. We definitely want to return. Thank you.

Fantastically Understated
We have visited Islamorada for a month every year for the last 8 summers, and of course rent properties each time. This has to be our favorite. Bill was such a gracious host, and had the property well appointed with anything and everything you could possibly need. It truly felt like home. We were concerned with the location to begin, as we generally stay around MM 86, however as it turned out we preferred this location, as it was actually more convenient to the grocery store, restaurants and marinas. The house itself was beautifully maintained, peaceful and very comfortable with amazing views. The location from a boating standpoint is ideal. Plenty of water for our 25' twin engine Blue Water. The dock was great with plenty of fish for the kids to catch or just gaze at (also a nice set of stairs to enter water if you wish), Just off the flats in front of the house there is some nice clear water for snorkeling around or going tubing. Access to Atlantic is a 10 minute boat ride no matter which way you go. We will not hesitate booking this property again, it was an overall fantastic experience.

Why they chose this property

This is a real home that just happens to be in one of the most beautiful spots on earth. It's not a "McMansion." It's not a "Mini-Resort." It's our home, and we think you will love it as much as we do. It's a modestly-sized, but modernly-updated home located in one of the most sought-after areas in Islamorada, in the middle Florida Keys. Many consider the middle Keys to be the nicest and most attractive of this unique island chain. This house has been in our family for 54 years this year. We are proud to have updated it in many ways, and to have brought it into "this century." We knew this neighborhood long before it was "discovered," when we were still on a dirt road. It is only within the past 20 years or so that the neighborhood has become so sought-after. Part of that is that the neighborhood is so well-taken care of by the owners. Also that, despite the attraction, we remain a very quiet, low-key neighborhood. Many of our neighbors are "snow birds," only coming down in the winter, but even then, it's an extremely placid and quiet neighborhood. If you're looking for a "luxury" home, please look elsewhere. If you're looking for a "Resort" type home, please still look elsewhere. If you're looking for a very genuine home, that comfortably sleeps six, and just happens to be in one of the most amazing and beautiful areas of the Florida Keys, you've found it!

What makes this property unique

The view of the water. The sunsets. The occasional sound of the wind. The many sounds and views of wildlife in and around the water. The view of many boats going wherever, some working, many just enjoying themselves. Even from ground level, the view of Florida Bay is dramatic. From the second floor, it's beyond dramatic. The view of Florida Bay is prominent, and beautiful, whether you're just walking from the living or family room to the kitchen, eating in the living room, or especially if eating on the patio. The view of the water is constant, and it's beautiful. To see sea life so close. To see so many fascinating birds so close. To see an occasional dolphin swim by. To see a large, but gentle manatee swim by. Bookshelves made by my father from lumber found while beach combing almost 50 years ago. Enough fascinating books on local history, marine life and seamanship on those shelves to keep you busy for quite awhile. You'll quickly realize that you're not in a hotel. You're not in a motel. You're not in a resort. You're in a real home. And you'll love it and enjoy it as much as much as we do. And we're within quick reach of six fascinating state parks, three of which can be reached by a short drive; three of which require either kayaks or a boat. These parks are the Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park, Lignumvitae Key Botanical State Park, Indian Key Historic State Park, San Pedro Underwater Archaeological State Park, Long Key State Park and the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail. In addition to the State parks, the Florida Keys History & Discovery Foundation museum in "downtown" Islamorada is a world-class museum unto itself. The amount of history in the middle Florida Keys, especially in the Islamorada area, easily rivals that of Key West, and vastly exceeds that of the upper Keys. If you enjoy exploring, dining out, have a sense of history, or just like experiencing new things, you'll love this part of the Keys.
