About this property

Lake Talquin cozy 2-bedroom cottage w/ peaceful lakeview. 35 minutes from FSU.

Welcome to The Pearly Squirrel, a cozy 1945 vintage lake house on a landscaped 1-acre lot on the shores of beautiful Lake Talquin in Florida's Big Bend, a short 35-minute drive from Tallahassee.

The Pearly Squirrel is a quiet, peaceful getaway where you can connect with nature and yourself. From the porch or the living room, watch the sunrise with a cup of coffee or the moonrise with a glass of wine. Curl up with a good book as you watch a rainstorm roll in over the lake. Cook up the day’s catch while just outside the kitchen window our namesake white squirrels play under venerable old trees draped in Spanish moss. Most of the shoreline of Lake Talquin is protected by Lake Talquin State Forest & State Park, so this is a quiet lake with dark night skies for star gazing and listening to the sounds of nature.

The Pearly Squirrel is the perfect home base for Big Bend adventures. Fishing, hunting, and hiking are just around the corner. Lake Talquin is nationally known for its high-quality bass, bluegill, and black crappie/speckled perch fishing. Feel free to fish from our dock, a short walk downhill from The Pearly Squirrel. You'll also get some good bird watching there, including osprey, anhinga, eagles, herons, woodpeckers, cormorants, and in winter, white pelicans.

At The Pearly Squirrel, you’re only a short drive from Florida's state capital, unspoiled marshes and springs, Gulf beaches, performing and visual arts, shopping, and much, much more. If you are here for sports or graduations at FSU or FAMU, you are only 35 minutes away. FSU and FAMU are on the west side of Tallahassee, so coming from The Pearly Squirrel you'll avoid a lot of game day traffic. The Tallahassee airport is also 35 minutes away.

Two comfy bedrooms, each with a full bed, ceiling fan, individual AC unit, and black-out curtains could be your best sleep ever. The bath features a walk-in shower, bidet, hair dryer, and wall fan, and is supplied with soap, shampoo, conditioner, towels, and toilet paper for your convenience. The living room, dining room, and kitchen are all connected with an open floor plan and two sliding glass doors, so the lake is always in view. Plenty of comfortable seating in the living room for watching TV, including an oversized recliner for an afternoon nap or for a good book from our bookshelf. There's also a DVD player and a collection of classic movies. The dining table seats six with plenty of room for a big meal or for a game or jigsaw puzzle from our collection. The kitchen is fully equipped with plates, cups, glassware, silverware, cookware, tea kettle, coffee maker, Keurig, French press, electric griddle, smoothie blender, and crock pot. The cottage has a large deck for enjoying the view, with seating, a coffee table, and an electric fan. There's also covered parking in the cottage's pole barn. The cottage is just a mile from the boat ramp, coin laundry, and bait and convenience store at Ingram's Marina.

We look forward to sharing our little corner of Old Florida with you at The Pearly Squirrel!

About the host

Hosted by Paige and Craig

Host profile image
Welcome to Lake Talquin! We met on a hike in the North Georgia mountains in 1994 and have been proving opposites attract ever since. Craig spent his childhood in Chicago and Ft. Lauderdale before getting a degree at Appalachian State. He spent his early career in hospitality–hotels and airlines–before becoming a hospice nurse. Paige is from Alabama and is an undergraduate alum of Florida State, where she was the first woman drum major for the Marching Chiefs and where she currently works with the College of Social Work. Between her two tenures at FSU, Paige served in the Peace Corps in Honduras and had a 35-year career leading human service nonprofits. After more than three decades working and raising their family in Atlanta, Paige and Craig moved to Lake Talquin in 2024. We live in the house below The Pearly Squirrel by the lake. If you see us enjoying a bonfire, come say hello! We think we've found a piece of heaven here and can't wait to share it with you!
