Luxury 2-bedroom cottage in spectacular location on Achill
Your Accommodation at Golden Strand View:
Your beachside retreat awaits. Golden Strand View is a tastefully reconstructed traditional Irish cottage with a large, architect-designed, modern extension. It offers a haven of luxury in an outstanding location with Golden Strand beach only 400 metres away. Step inside to discover refined comfort and thoughtful design, where expansive glass walls and picture windows flood each room with natural light from the ever-shifting Atlantic skies. Every detail - from the warm textures underfoot to the carefully chosen furnishings - invites you to unwind in cosy luxury, against a backdrop of spectacular coastal and mountain views.
The Living Space
The heart of Golden Strand View is its spectacular open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area, anchored by a dramatic floor-to-ceiling glass wall that brings the outside in. By day, the dining table - comfortably seating up to ten guests - becomes the perfect spot to linger over meals or coffee while gazing across the splendour of Blacksod Bay and Golden Strand beach. By night, the space transforms into an intimate snug for entertaining, set against the shifting Atlantic skies. A large, luxuriously comfortable L-shaped sofa invites you to sink in and relax, while the wood-burning stove (logs provided) promise cosy evenings. The 65-inch OLED flat screen TV with multiple channels provides entertainment, and high-speed WiFi is available throughout the cottage.
Kitchen & Utility
The modern kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need to cook, dine, and entertain in style: a sleek island with a breakfast bar and second sink, Miele appliances - oven, 4-ring stovetop/hob, fridge/freezer, microwave and dishwasher - as well as an air fryer, toaster, kettle and Nespresso coffee pod machine. You’ll find premium crockery, flatware/cutlery, glassware and pots - perfect for hosting guests without compromise. A separate utility room houses a washing machine and dryer for convenience. Designed by Lisa Evans of Ensor Interior Design in England, the interiors feature original art and sculpture, carefully chosen materials, and a sophisticated palette. From the triple-glazed windows and underfloor heating to the curated furnishings, every detail has been thoughtfully considered to offer a warm, welcoming, and upscale retreat where comfort and relaxation are paramount.
The Bathrooms
At Golden Strand View, the bathrooms are thoughtfully designed to offer understated luxury and exceptional comfort. The master bedroom benefits from a beautifully appointed en-suite featuring a full-size bath with a directional shower, perfect for long soaks or a quick rinse. The second bedroom is served by a generous family bathroom with a spacious walk-in shower, complete with a rainforest-style overhead and a separate directional shower head. Both spaces are elegantly tiled and tastefully decorated to create a calm, sensuous retreat. Heated towel rails, premium Villeroy & Boch ceramic fittings, underfloor heating, and consistently hot water ensure a superior experience. High-quality, soft and fluffy towels, ample shelf space for your essentials, and luxury handwash complete the sense of refined indulgence and meticulous attention to detail.
The Bedrooms
The two bedrooms at Golden Strand View are generously spacious, with one featuring a king-size bed and the other a queen-size, each dressed in premium-quality bedding and linens. Carefully chosen colours and tasteful artwork create a gentle, calming atmosphere perfect for restful sleep. Thoughtful layered lighting - with main ceiling lights complemented by bedside lamps and subtle mood lighting - allows you to set the perfect ambience at any time of day. Wooden floors with soft rugs underfoot, generous storage space, and room-darkening blinds ensure both comfort and convenience. And from every window, inspiring views of the beach, bay, hills, and mountains greet you each morning, making every awakening a moment to savour.
The History
The original cottage building is believed to date from the early 1800s and had stone walls and a thatched roof. It was owned by Michael and Norah Lavelle and then their son, Tom who lived in it all his life from 1870 to about 1950. Given the number of Lavelles in Doogort East at that time Tom was known as Tom Norah after his mother. He lived alone, but in later life his niece came to look after him, building herself the little single room home which is still there on the slope facing the road. Tom's house was later sold to a local family and we bought it in 2012. We rebuilt it using the original stone and then in 2025 we added a contemporary extension so we could rent out the house and share the beautiful location with others. Our own house is right across the road - it was also an early 1800s house which we rebuilt using the original stone and then enlarged with a contemporary extension.

About the host
Hosted by Stephen Roughton-Smith

My family has been coming to Achill for many years for its wild, unspoilt beauty, wide range of things to do and the friendly local welcome. We rebuilt and extended this traditional cottage in a spectacular, private location to the highest standards as a “home from home” so we could offer our guests the luxury and service we would expect ourselves. Our own house is right across the road - it was also an early 1800s house which we rebuilt using the original stone and then enlarged with a contemporary extension.
Why they chose this property
Very private, peaceful rural location with quite possibly some of the best coastal views in Ireland
What makes this property unique
Combination of a rebuilt historic cottage and a contemporary modern extension, all finished to the highest modern standards.
