MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE TRIPLE DOME HOME:
The Triple Dome Home is an innovative and sustainable residence originally conceived and built on campus at Brigham Young University as part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon student competition.
This zero-energy house is composed of three interconnected monolithic concrete domes, each engineered to maximize energy efficiency, durability, and thermal performance. The domed structure inherently provides significant thermal mass and resilience, enabling the home to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures with minimal mechanical heating or cooling.
Inside, the home includes a two-bedroom, two-bath layout with an open-plan living area, kitchen, and functional spaces designed for everyday living.
Engineering and sustainability features include solar panels in a double-sided photovoltaic array integrated into an adjacent pergola, generating sufficient renewable energy to meet the home’s electrical demand. The solar system is paired with a SPAN smart electrical panel, which provides real-time energy monitoring and intelligent load management, allowing owners to track consumption, prioritize critical circuits, and optimize solar production for greater efficiency and resilience. The residence is constructed using monolithic concrete dome technology, providing exceptional structural integrity along with resistance to wind, fire, and extreme weather, while leveraging the inherent thermal mass of concrete to moderate interior temperatures. A continuous PVC membrane under the outer stucco shell wraps the exterior to enhance waterproofing and thermal performance, and select portions of the domes are earth-bermed to further increase insulation and passive energy efficiency. Complementing the envelope system, triple-paned high-performance windows minimize heat transfer and supports the home’s overall net-zero energy strategy.
The project’s goals were to challenge conventional residential construction, reduce carbon footprint, and demonstrate scalable sustainable building practices.
In 2023, the Triple Dome Home was a featured entry in the Utah Valley Parade of Homes, marking the first time a university-built demonstration home was showcased alongside traditional production and custom homes. Visitors toured the structure on the Brigham Young University campus, where it drew attention for its unique architecture and performance-driven design.
After the Solar Decathlon and Utah Valley Parade of Homes, the house was sold and relocated to Garden City for use as a short-term rental, allowing a broader community of guests to experience and enjoy its innovative, sustainable design firsthand.
