About this property
Holiday house Gorteen for 1 - 5 persons with 2 bedrooms - Holiday house
ED Refnr. 2757962
James Tymon cottage is a late 19th century farmhouse nestling on 30 acres of stone walled fields and old trees by the bank of the Owenmore river in Co Sligo a haven of tranquility yet just 1 km from the village of Gurteen.
The cottage which is situated on a quiet country road is a haven of tranquility.Enjoy walks and picnics by the bank of the river or just wander by the stone walls and old trees of the farmland. It's all yours to enjoy. If you are lucky you might catch a glimpse of a fox, hare or indeed a Heron or Kingfisher on the river.
To the rear of the cottage we have our cowbire, old stone sheds and haybarn. The space in between is a natural courtyard ideal for one of our picnic tables and barbecue.Down by the river is an ideal place for a picnic and as you stroll by the river walk you will find a picnic table.
There is lots of space for parking and acres of land to ramble.
There is loads of storage space for all your gear - fishing rods, bicycles, surfing boards etc.
Our two storey farmhouse cottage has oil fired central heating throughout yet still retains the old world charm of a solid fuel stove in the dining room and an open fire in the living room. Enjoy as we do peat fires in the cosy living room with unlimited turf supplied free by us.
The cottage consists of the following.
Two bedrooms on the first floor.
Number 1 has a double bed with views over the countryside and river to the front and to the outbuildings and trees to the rear.
Number 2 Contains a double and a large single bed (4') with views over the front garden and countryside.
The kitchen is well equipped with all the appliances, utensils, cutlery, tea towels and cleaning materials you will need for an enjoyable stay. It overlooks the old stone barn.
The dining room. The dining room is off the kitchen. it is a brightly lit room with views to the front and rear of the cottage. A very comfortable room with a Nestor martin stove blazing away in the fireplace.
Our cosy living room has a three piece suite and an open fire at its heart. Relax and catch up with a glass of wine and choose a book from our book case with the wonderful scent of peat burning in the fireplace.Catch up with your favourite television programmes on our satallite TV or you may prefer a movie from our selection.
The shower room and toilet are on the ground floor. The shower is electric and we supply towels for the duration of your stay. Of course toilet rolls and cleaning materials are supplied.
We have our utility room in a portion of the old cowbire next to the house. Here we keep our washing machine and dryer so no noisy distractions.
We also have an open air clothes line in the open haybarn. Great for getting your clothes naturally dry.
Fancy a game of darts. The utility room makes an ideal place for our dartboard.
Local Area Information
Stroll to the local village of Gurteen, its just 1km away. With its Coleman centre and lively pubs you will be well entertained on the music front.
Food is served in two of the bars - The Crossbar and Teach Murray.
The local supermarket is open until 9pm every night.
Sligo is a patchwork of rolling hills, mountains, lakes, rivers and fields dotted with ruined castles, forts and abbeys interlinked with small towns and villages.
The cottage as many of our guests have said is an ideal base from which to set out and discover it all.
Close by are the ancient lake dwellings on lough Gara and the passage tombs at Carrowkeel where on winter solstice the rising sun enters on of the chambers.
Gurteen is surrounded by lots of country towns and villages. The old market towns of Boyle and Ballymote with their Abbey and castle ruin are within 10 miles. Boyle holds a farmers market every Saturday in the grounds of King house once the home of the Connacht rangers regiment also known as the Devils own.
Just outside Boyle the beautiful lough Key forest park has lots of walks including a tree canopy walk, lake cruises, a Boda Borg adventure building, a bathing area which is patrolled by lifeguards in the summer and a cafe.
Horse riding, clay pigeon shooting and other country pursuits are available at Lough Gara riding stables.5 miles from the cottage.
The Raptor centre near Ballymote (7miles) is a must see. There you will encounter some of the great wild birds and watch them going through their paces.
There are lake, forest and upland walks to suit all. I keep a list of walks at the cottage.
The beaches in Co Sligo are some of the very best. Those at Strandhill, Mullaghmore,Rosses point and Enniscrone are suitable for everybody for swimming, walking, surfing, kite flying or just lazing about.
The cottage is a traditional farmhouse and retains lots of the character from those bygone days but with all the necessities of modern living.
The cottage caters for younger guests with a cot, highchair and stair gates.
I provide unlimited turf for both the open fire and stove during your stay including everything needed to start the fire.
