About this property

Naturalist's Cloud Forest Retreat

Our house is located on 40 acres of private property that abuts the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and is one of the last private homes before the Reserve. More than half our land is in primary cloud forest, but we also have a large clearing below our house that is perfect for viewing wildlife. In fact, because our place is contiguous to more than 110,000 acres of protected forest, you’re likely to see many more animals here than in most other places in the Monteverde zone. White-faced monkeys, coatis, and agoutis are all commonly seen on our land, and several cloud forest specialists, including resplendent quetzals and black guans are also often seen near the house. Even brocket deer, which are very uncommon, are occasionally seen here.

Fred Morrison built the house in the mid-1980s. He first visited Monteverde in 1981 and during his stay, he and two other biologists had a picnic on the property, taking in the spectacular view of the forest and the Gulf of Nicoya in the distance. A week later, his friends called to tell him that the parcel was for sale and asked if he would like to become a part owner. The three of them purchased the property later that year from one of the original Quaker farmers. Since then, each shareholder has built a house or cabin on the land. None of the dwellings are in sight of the others, which gives you a very private experience.

The house itself is located on a hillside at the end of a 500-foot driveway. It was designed with lots of large, picture windows to bring in plenty of natural light and is oriented toward the southwest with dramatic views of the Gulf of Nicoya and the forest canopy below.

The downstairs includes a living room with a wood burning stove, a dining room, kitchen, two box seats, a large bathroom and a small utility room with a washer and dryer. There’s also a long front porch on the first floor and upstairs, a roofed balcony, where you can sit looking out at the Gulf of Nicoya and watch up to nine species of hummingbirds visit the feeders. The second floor has two good-sized bedrooms, one with a queen-sized bed and the other with two full beds.

At our place, you will be well away from the bustle of Santa Elena and the main road. You will be able to go to sleep to the sounds of katydids, cicadas, frogs and wake up to chorusing black-bellied wood quail and dueting gray-breasted wood wrens.

A public bus passes by at the bottom of the driveway several times each day and taxis are available at any time. Several good restaurants, a small grocery store and a few gift/coffee shops are located within 2 miles and many more are available in nearby Santa Elena.

The entrance to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is just a ten minute walk from our house. But, of course, the walk could take much longer if you're looking at wildlife or plants!

If you’d like a home-cooked Costa Rican meal, we can arrange to have a talented local cook come before you arrive (or during your stay) and prepare one. She can also deliver groceries upon request.

If you're interested in hiring a private naturalist guide or taking a tour, please be in touch with us and we can make arrangements.

Amazing stay!

The house was bigger and nicer than I expected. The view is incredible! So fun spotting coatimundis and hummingbirds even from inside the house through the big windows all around. Raul was the most helpful and friendly host - he even pulled our car out of a ditch! Lillian's dinner was from heaven - perfect meal for our family after arriving from a long day of travel. Thank you for such a nice time in Monteverde!

Absolutely Beautiful

The cabin is so cozy with everything you need to enjoy the amazing surroundings. Raul met us and helped us with everything, including a plat tire. I was definitely worth the challenging three hour drive from Liberia. Thanks again Raul!

The spot was completely magical. Our only negative was that we didn’t stay long enough. Incredibly peaceful and beautiful with outrageous sunset views and very easy walks to Monteverde park. A true dream.

Amazing!!

We couldn’t have been happier with this spot! It’s quiet and feel secluded but it’s only a few short minutes to drive to some of the attractions around Monteverde. Raul (property manager) was SO helpful and accommodating and went above and beyond to make our trip memorable. We had Lillian cook three meals for us, as well as get some groceries to have on hand and that was such a treat. I would not hesitate to recommend or to stay here again.

Nice quiet secluded house a short walk away from the entrance to the Cloud Forest Preserve. However, there is a fairly steep and long driveway to negotiate. There are animals and birds that frequent the property, and there is a nice walk through a trail on the property itself. Just be aware, this is a comfortable but rustic house- no TV, but decent wifi (suggestion to Laurie: replace the router with one or two eeros. Shower head also should be replaced.). Pre-arrival communication with the owner was great, as was the check-in with Raul, the property manager. A short drive to the restaurants and shops at Monteverde and Santa Elena. Take advantage of the opportunity to have Lillian cook a meal for you.

Cloud Forest Cabin - A must!

Perfect cabin situated above the trees of the cloud forest! We were juat amazed by the view of this place! They had everything we needed to stay comfortably. Very nice sitting area on the second floor where you can feed the hummingbirds and watch other wildlife. We had tons of hummingbirds in the day and bats flying around at night, super cool! Toucanets and Motmots where also a common sighting. Thank you Raul for tracking down a whole Gunabana fruit for us while we were there! The property is very close to the Monteverde cloud forest reserve. You could walk to it but is a little uphill from the property. We decided to just park at the official parking spot a little ways down the road and it worked out good for us. Its also a short ride/drive to downtown Monteverde with everything you need. Definitely a special place amd so glad to have stayed here.

A Truly Unique Place in the World

We had a great stay at this wonderfully unique cabin in the cloud forest. The house is full of rustic charm & the surrounding area is one of the most private locations you can find. The driveway may have been improved lately because I read 4x4 was required, but our shuttle driver drove his Mercedes Sprinter van up with no trouble. The beds were very comfortable & the house was sparkling clean. We only found one spider during our stay & we had no trouble escorting him gently outside. I must highlight all the help we received from Laurie & her team during our trip. This was our first time in Costa Rica & she provided us with invaluable contacts to make our trip smooth & memorable. First, she introduced us to Jose who has an immaculate red tourist van & is an excellent & safe driver. He took us wherever we needed to go & patiently waited while we did errands, etc. He even went into the bank with my husband to help translate during a transaction. Way above & beyond! Secondly, Lillian prepared delicious food that was waiting for us at the house. It was so convenient since we did not have a car for shopping. You must try the Arroz con Pollo & Tres Leches Cake! Third, the property manager, Raul, was incredibly helpful throughout our stay. The location is remote, so it was nice to know Raul was close by & accessible via WhatsApp for anything. He even arranged for his son to take us on a Night Hike. Raul Jr. is an excellent guide. Highly recommend! Overall, a 5-star experience!

Fantastic location

This is a well made house full of history in an absolutely incredible location. All the bedrooms are up a steep flight of stairs however, and the bathroom is on the first floor. So anyone who is slightly disabled be forewarned. The house is at the top of a steep winding driveway which we handled ok with 2 wheel dr. If the weather is extremely rainy however you will need four-wheel-drive. There's a town about 10 minutes away by car which has groceries and restaurants. There are a lot of things to do in the area. The man who checked us in was more attentive than we care for. We like to be totally alone. He checked in every day to make sure we didn't need anything. He scared us a couple of times when he showed up without letting us know first. At first check-in he was great though. He showed us everything in the house and showed us a tarantula in a burrow and hummingbird feeders we could use. For a hummingbird watcher this is an incredible location. We saw four of the seven species drinking from our feeder at any given time and we got as close as 2 feet away while they fed. WhatsApp is used everywhere in Costa Rica. I wish I had set it up before I got to Costa Rica because I wasn't able to once I was there. But you could communicate with pretty much everyone, including the caretaker if you have WhatsApp. The Wi-Fi in the house was good. My cellular didn't work at all. My friend and I would like to return to this house again. It was truly an amazing location.

The hummingbirds were the highlight!

We loved this house. We only stayed two nights, but I could've stayed here several more days. We had dinner prepared by Lillian before our arrival so we didn't have to worry about going out for dinner that night. It was wonderful and lasted us a couple of days. Raul met us at the house when we arrived and gave a great overview. The highlight was the upstairs porch with the hummingbird feeders. We spent a lot of time out there watching the action and identified several different hummingbird species. There is a trail head very close to the house. Beware that a tree has fallen across one part of the trail. If you can get through there, the trail continues on the other side. Overall, this was an outstanding experience - one of my favorite memories in Costa Rica!

Cloud Forest Getaway

My husband and I stayed in this beautiful, historic cabin with our three adult children. We knew it would be tight quarters with two bedrooms and one bathroom, but the house actually had lots of spaces for privacy --we loved the comfortable window seats--and an amazing porch and property with trails. Raul, Sr. met us and oriented us to the house. He was welcoming and very helpful. His son, Raul, Jr., gave us a tour of Monteverde and it was one of our highlights of our time in Costa Rica. Lillian cooked two delicious, traditional, homecooked meals and these were a treat. The views of the Nicoya Penisula and the abundant wildlife were amazing. I definitely recommend this experience for those coming to hike and to experience something more local.

Paradise in the cloud forest

We had such a wonderful time! Laurie and Fred were amazing and very responsive hosts. Raul (local to the house) helped us figure out tours in the area and transportation. Lillian made us a delicious Costa Rican meal for the night we arrived. This house is beautiful and comfortable. Our favorite part was the hummingbirds that visited feeders on the porches, and the other animals we saw right on the property. We enjoyed hiking the trails behind the house. This house was wonderful and we really felt welcomed! Do not miss this property! 10 out of 10 in every way!

Cloud forest comes to you!

Great cozy cabin right on edge of cloud forest. Very comfortable. Could see outside from almost everywhere in house. Wildlife just walks and flies right by. Saw almost as much wildlife from the windows and balcony as from guided tour in cloud forest. The hummingbird feeders totally worth it. Raul was incredibly friendly and helpful and his son provided an amazing guided tour in the cloud forest. Awesome stay!

Amazing Natural Getaway

This house nestled as close as possible to the Monteverde Cloud Forest is nothing short of a wildlife paradise. In the morning, you can hear the calls of toucans, motmots, and howler monkeys. At least six species of hummingbirds visited our feeders every day, and coatis and agoutis were a common sight. The scenic view of the trees and ocean from the second floor deck was amazing. In conclusion, I would highly recommend this property to anyone who wants an authentic Costa Rican experience.

Secluded Cloud Forest Hummingbird Retreat

This is a simple and beautiful place where we enjoyed spending a lot of our time at the property. The nature trail, the hummingbirds, the views, the other wildlife and the peace made each day a wonder. In the yard we saw 9 different species of hummingbirds, coatis, white-faced monkeys and other birds and butterflies. We especially liked having Lillian's food waiting for us each day so we didn't have to figure out where to eat! She prepared olla de carne, veggies, tortillas, guac, the best pico ever, rice and more. Raul was wonderful and welcoming. We had a night tour already planned, but I would have preferred to do one at the property with Raul Jr. because there is so much we didn't see on our own! A few things to note are how remote this place actually is and how daunting the drive is (but all the roads in MV are not good) and also the house has zero curtains or shades, so the views are wonderful, but it's impossible to keep the light out. It was also chilly in January-- we used the wood burning stove and could've used slippers (the floors are gorgeous, but cold and slippery). This place won't be for everyone, but it was perfect for us! After 3 weeks touring Costa Rica, this was our favorite place where we felt the most authentic experience of our trip.

Amazing property, wishing we stayed longer.....

We had an incredible stay at this cozy and well-equipped cabin! The surroundings are absolutely stunning, and Raul was an amazing host. He went above and beyond to make our experience unforgettable—he was very flexible with our changing arrival time and even waited for us late at night as we encountered some challenges with the rental car. He also helped set up a fantastic night hike with his son and showed us the unique plants around the property. His attention to detail and kindness truly stood out.A special thank you to Lillian for the delicious dinner that awaited us after a long day of travel—it was so comforting and even lasted for two nights. We absolutely loved being away from the crowds, enjoying the peace and quiet of this stunning location. Sitting on the porch, watching hummingbirds dance through the rain, was pure magic. This place is a true gem, and we’d recommend it to anyone looking for a unique and peaceful retreat. Thank you, Raul, for everything!

Enjoyable Monteverde Stay

The house sits on a beautiful land - lush green, peaceful, with lots of animals. The hummingbird feeder provided by the owners is a high hit. Within minutes of hanging the feeder up, we saw more than twenty kind of hummingbirds! The house is only 10 min walk from the monteverde cloud forest biological preserve, which makes it convenient to visit the preserve. We also went on a night tour with a tour guide the owner recommended. The tour was very informative, and it was fun looking for animals together with our guide. Laurie, the owner, is extremely responsive and helpful. The house is old but kept clean and cozy. It is at a high position on the mountain with a good view of the forest and the ocean. We loved this house and the surrounding property. The trail on the property was fun to hike. The hummingbirds were absolutely amazing! Monteverde is a super place to hike with Howler, Spider, Capuchin monkeys, Coatis, and many beautiful birds. We even saw the elusive Resplendent Quetzal! My only complaint is the terrible roads so full of potholes. A bit scary to drive and caused us some carsickness. Otherwise loved the isolation and new habitat. Thank you!

We live in Massachusetts for most of the year, but we spend a portion of each year in Monteverde. Fred first visited Monteverde in 1981; Laurie came in 1986. Since then, we have both worked on different biology projects in the area (bellbirds, quetzals, dragonflies) and for a short stint, Laurie worked as a guide in the Reserve. We got married in 1994 and in 2000, our daughter was born. Since 2004, we have led more than three dozen natural history trips to Costa Rica.

Fred is now retired from a career as a science teacher, but is currently studying native bees in MA and working with others on electronic field guides to the dragonflies and damselflies of Costa Rica and Ecuador.

Laurie is the co-director of Historic Northampton and works as an environmental consultant with Conservation Works LLC. For ten years (1999-2009), she produced a weekly natural history series called Field Notes, which aired on WFCR 88.5 FM in Amherst, MA. Some of her previous stories can be heard on Living on Earth.

Both Fred and Laurie are active in Westhampton, serving on the Conservation Commission (Fred), Zoning Board of Appeals (Laurie), and the Open Space & Recreation Committee (Fred & Laurie).

Our daughter is now a student at Boston University, majoring in anthropology and minoring in spanish.

Why they chose this property

This is a very special piece of property because it borders the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and is one of the last houses before the Reserve entrance. At nearly 5,000 feet in elevation, at times the property is literally bathed in the clouds, with mists from the Caribbean blowing west toward the Pacific.

What makes this property unique

Quiet, private and extraordinary wildlife opportunities.
