- History and character: A restored piece of old Houston with a story behind it
The Plant House was created by longtime friends Jeff Kaplan and Robin Goldstein, who set out to create a space that felt welcoming, distinctive, and intentionally designed for groups spending quality time together. Jeff is a co-creator of Houston’s Axelrad Beer Garden, and Robin is a co-creator of the Fearless Critic Houston Restaurant Guide. Their vision was to create a guest house with soul: comfortable, creative, and rooted in place.
The project began when neighbors in the historic firehouse next door worked to save several 1890s Houston bungalows that were slated for demolition in nearby blocks of the Coffee Plant neighborhood. Legendary Houston home mover John Cherry relocated the homes to one site, preserving not only the buildings themselves but also the neighborhood spirit they carried.
The result is a small, experimental residential block that feels closer to 1890s Houston than to a typical modern development, with low fences, shared green spaces, and a close-knit community feel. The Plant House is made up of two of the six relocated homes. This listing includes one of those homes, while the others are occupied by artists, builders, community organizers, and entrepreneurs.
