{ABOUT HALE AKUA}

Hale Akua Garden Farm & Eco-Retreat Center is an agricultural and wellness education and retreat center located in the lush tropical rainforest of North Shore in Haʻikū, Maui. The land is bathed in ocean trade winds and negative ions from the 150-foot waterfall just below us. The center's buildings are situated along the cliffside of a seven-acre property.

Nestled in a magical and idyllic setting, Hale Akua is thoughtfully designed to provide a natural, supportive environment for groups, families, couples, and individuals to learn, relax, and restore well-being while immersing themselves in an eco-educational experience in Hawaii. Hale Akua offers farm-based and wellness education and experiential learning, accommodations, and organic and seasonal produce from our land.

Accommodations are available for those seeking overnight lodging with the intention of an immersive education and experiential learning experience about farm and wellness. Hale Akua provides agricultural and wellness classes and retreats, as well as serving as a learning center for leadership development programs for visitors, students, and the local community.

We offer an alternative Maui experience compared to the leeward-side resorts and are the perfect midpoint stay for a Road to Hana journey. Farm workshops are offered in organic farming practices, sustainable land management, biodiversity and ecosystem awareness, permaculture design, regenerative agriculture, composting, aquaponics, soil health and conservation, alternative energy, and ecology. The retreat center also offers programs covering a range of Native Hawaiian cultural practices, including but not limited to ho‘oponopono, lomi lomi massage, and mālama ʻāina. Additional offerings include communication training, meditation, and personal development programs. Furthermore, wellness classes and workshops such as yoga, breathwork, meditation, nutrition, and healthy lifestyle practices are also offered weekly or monthly.

The mission of Hale Akua Garden Farm & Eco-Retreat Center is to provide a beautiful and nurturing environment for experiential learning, healing, rejuvenation, personal growth, and inner peace for all its visitors and students.

Note: Please keep in mind that our center is a rustic compound in the middle of the jungle. We do have dehumidifiers and air purifiers in every room. We are located in a tropical rainforest with many weird and wonderful insect species. We only use natural pesticides and cleaning chemicals on the property. As a result, we occasionally have more animal visitors. These may include geckos, ants, flying cockroaches, centipedes, cane spiders, and mice. We are in their natural habitat, so we will not be able to refund any portion of your stay for these house guests.

Other things to note
The price listed includes cleaning fees and extra coffee, tea, and cream if needed in the room.

Because we are also a certified organic farm, an interactive, in-person course in regenerative agriculture and closed-loop farming is offered to all visiting students. We also provide classes in yoga, hula, communication training, and Lomi Lomi massage if requested. Our massage team includes three highly trained Lomi Lomi practitioners and one instructor who is certified to teach individuals how to give Lomi Lomi massage to their partner. Learning opportunities are available throughout the property and at the office. In addition, to the interactive farm tour, guests can access extended courses in closed-loop farming via QR codes on their phones. These include in-depth modules on black soldier flies, aquaponics, and how aquaponics supports the health of the ocean around Maui by reducing demand for ocean fish—species that are also essential food sources for whales, dolphins, sea turtles, reef fish, and seabirds. Another QR-based course explores high-protein and anti-cancer foods from Oceania, rooted in traditional cultural practices. For those who prefer not to read on their phones, printed copies of all courses ,are available upon request, at the office.
We are also adding a new and fun activity at Hale Akua Garden Farm. Fishing for tilapia from one of our ponds, guided by a staff member, who will also kill the fish and teach you how to prepare it to be cooked. Truly one of the most delicious fish we have ever tasted and that is because of the quality of the food that we feed them.

The solar electric system at Hale Akua currently consists of 200 solar panels, 12 inverters, and 24 solar batteries. Our founder Lori Grace has invested in this system to prevent unnecessary contributions to climate change. This solar electric system will add another two days of electricity, provided there has been an adequate amount of sunlight charge before an electrical outage. We also have 10 Eco-Flow batteries (3kw electricity per room) which can add two to three days of electricity if needed. Learning to live on limited electricity is a wonderful and necessary education for our current climate situation. We would like for all our guests to learn to work together with our staff in these situations.
Large hotels here on Maui that experience an electrical failure do not provide backup power, nor do they offer refunds. As we do not feel responsible for Hawaiian Electric’s failures, there will be an opportunity for education rather than a refund if we have an outage, and our staff will assist you the best they can.
