About the host
Hosted by JP Joyce
We’re Jean‑Pierre (JP) and Anjelika — JP is part American and part French, and Anjelika is Russian. While we currently call California home, we spend much of our time in Bocas del Toro and Costa Rica, where the wild beauty and tropical rhythm fuel both our work and our souls.
JP is a lifelong adventurer, builder, and designer, carrying forward a family legacy of creating extraordinary places. His grandfather founded Le Mas Candille — a charming retreat in Mougins, France — which still exists today as a premier resort in the South of France. Following in those footsteps, JP envisioned and brought to life Macaw Bungalows, blending barefoot luxury with jungle grit, and crafting a hideaway that celebrates both nature and thoughtful design.
Anjelika brings warmth and hospitality to the experience, with a love for staging homes and creating inviting spaces that feel lived-in, cozy, and comfortable. Her talent for hospitality and attention to the finishing touches help ensure every guest feels truly at home.
Together, we’ve poured our hearts into this project — building each treehouse and bungalow with intention, joy, and a spirit of adventure. From the handcrafted rope railings to the curated boho bedding and whimsical nautical details, every element was designed to evoke emotion, wonder, and comfort.
So come — kick off your shoes, breathe in the sea air, and fall asleep to the call of the wild macaws. This is your escape. This is your adventure. Welcome to Macaw Bungalows… Welcome to the edge of wild.
Why they chose this property
When we first arrived in Bocas del Toro, we were completely captivated — not just by the lush jungle and rustling palms, but by the way the rainforest melts into the sea, wild and untouched. It was magic. And yet, we couldn’t find a place to stay that truly captured that feeling. So we built one. Actually, we built two kinds... Jungle Treehouses that soar above the mangroves — and Beachfront Bungalows just steps from the sea. Macaw Bungalows was born from a dream: to create a hideaway where guests could live out their own island story — barefoot, unhurried, immersed in nature — without giving up comfort or style.
What makes this property unique
We designed every space with love and a deep respect for the land. Local hardwoods, rope railings, open-air showers — all crafted to harmonize with the environment. Inside, you’ll find imported touches of comfort: vintage lighting, cozy linens, bold art, and breezes that float through every room. There are no roads here. No cars. Just sand paths, treehouse walkways, and the rhythm of island time.
