The Bremer Haus or Altbremer Haus is a type of house that was built in Bremen between the mid-19th century and the 1930s and still characterizes the cityscape in some districts of Bremen today.
The Bremen house was mostly designed as a detached house. The terraced houses in the architectural styles of Classicism, Historicism and Art Nouveau follow a typical pattern and tend to be built in depth. Typically, there are two large main rooms arranged one behind the other and a staircase to the side, which usually has a porch facing the street. The Bremen house is often two to three storeys high, with a basement. Single-storey houses were also built, particularly in the originally lower middle-class and working-class districts. The basement is located one to two meters below street level and is accessible from the street via an external staircase. The kitchen and other utility rooms as well as servants' quarters were originally housed here.
