About this property

A Beautifully Restored Loghouse That Combines Heritage With Modern Amenities.

A real heritage opportunity where you can stay in the oldest house in Strathcona County. This is your chance to experience an early pioneer home without sacrificing modern amenities. While maintaining the original character of the loghouse, newer additions have included a full kitchen, heated floors, bathroom and laundry facilities. In addition to the loghouse, the property also features many historical items including an old bunkhouse, a Swiss-style logbarn, antique farm machinery and an old boat once used for a tourist camp on Cooking Lake in the 1930's. Kilometres of trails throughout the property introduce you to the native flora and fauna in this area. As a wildlife preserve, the property has been maintained in its natural state. Our property also boasts a 70 acre Ducks Unlimited Conservation Area. If you are a bird-watching enthusiast or just looking to enjoy nature, this is the place for you. We offer tranquillity in a natural setting all within a short 35 minute drive to the city of Edmonton.
You will enjoy the full-use and privacy of this heritage loghome with your hosts only a short 10 minute walk away along a forest trail. We are there when you need us but happy to allow you to enjoy your time away on your own in peace and quiet.

Wonderful Old-Timey Cabin!

We had a fantastic, relaxing stay. Was primarily for the purpose of snowshoeing, which was amazing... lots of fresh snow and amazing trails that start right behind the cabin. The cabin itself is great... comfy and well-equipped.

Maggie’s Hill was the perfect refuge from the business of life. From the drive in you feel the world take a breath. It’s a stunningly situated property tucked away amidst fields, forests and meadows. Everything was spotless - the beds comfy- the kitchen so well equipped. I adored the mug wall- everyone can pick their perfect mug for that cup of coffee on the patio. We played card games and badminton, ate delicious meals and enjoyed the breezes and sounds of coyotes in the night. We would love to return and experience all the seasons. Thank you Martha and John - until the next time.

A blissful retreat

I spent a blissful weekend at Maggie's Hill as part of a songwriting and recording retreat. The setting, the cabin and the amenities are simply amazing in all respects. From the point that Martha greeted me on arrival, to the quiet mornings, starlit evenings, and general peacefulness of the place, me and my creative partners felt like we were in heaven. If you want peace and quiet in a rustic but well appointed setting, this is definitely the place. I'll be going back!

My sister and I decided to take a staycation and found this marvellous gem . Check-in couldn't have been easier. Martha gave great instructions and was available for any questions. My sister, who has trouble sleeping, had the best sleep in a long time. Peace and quiet minutes from Edmonton and staying in a historical house. I loved my morning coffee on the screened porch. We can't wait to return.

I enjoy spending time in the outdoors including hiking, biking and horseback riding. Following an Honours degree in History from Queen's University and a Masters in Information Science from the University of Western Ontario, I have enjoyed a career in museum management. Personally, my husband and I have owned historical properties that we have strived to restore back to their original character. We love to travel, explore new places and meet new people. Fulfilling one of our goals, over the years we have taken our four children on camping trips across Canada travelling as far north, west, south and east as possible within Canada in a truck with an old canvas tent. We loved our journeys together as a family and we look forward to meeting you and hearing about your journeys.

Why they chose this property

Maggie's Hill Heritage Loghouse is a special property that immediately appealed to my husband and I. It is the oldest property in Strathcona County and was settled by one of the first Metis settlers in this area. When his daughter (Maggie) married a Scottish railway man, he gifted the loghouse to them as a wedding gift. Together Maggie and John raised 9 children in a 600 sq. foot loghouse. Sitting on a hill overlooking Hastings Lake, the property soon became known as Maggie's Hill. It is a privilege for my husband and I to become the lastest stewards of this treasured historic site.

What makes this property unique

The property is resplendent with details that depict the early pioneer heritage in Strathcona County from fencing styles, shingles, and architectural details. The property also boasts a 70 acre Ducks Unlimited Conservation Area with an opportunity to view a wide variety of birds and waterfowl including teal ducks, wood ducks, pelican, goshawks and great horned owls.
